Considering going rehe on our own and not through the cruise line. Is the snorkeling at leisure or with a guide only?

Unfortunately, we only had a few hours in Chankanaab which was not enough to see everything available.
Only a short cab ride from the cruise ship, the botanical garden and the lagoon are beautiful. The beach features pretty white sand and plenty of lounge chairs for everyone with lots of snorkeling opportunities. The food in the little restaurant at the beach was very good, as were the tequila samples, according to my husband.
All the employees were very friendly and helpful.
Next time, we will bring more time to explore the rest of the park. Would definitely recommend this.

We visited Chankanaab on our own while on a cruise. The day we were there was a busy one in Cozumel, with 5 cruise ships in port, but the park did not seem crowded at all. We took a taxi (plentiful at the cruise terminal) and arrived late in the morning and stayed at Chankanaab most of the day. A staff member whisked us into the sea lion show as soon as we arrived. The show was cute and the sea lions looked happy and well cared for. We did end up paying an arm and a leg for a photo of the sea lion kissing our daughter, but it was an awfully cute photo. We did not swim with dolphins or manatees, but my husband snorkeled ($15 for equipment rental). We discovered that some of the places where one can enter the snorkeling area are more challenging (rocky and slippery) than others. There is also a second snorkeling area past the rental place that isn't obvious.

Personally, I sat under a palapa in a comfortable chair, gazing out at the gorgeous blue water and reading a book. I use a mobility scooter that won't work on sand, and we discovered that the park has two sand wheelchairs available just inside the entrance. Servers circulate constantly offering food and beverages which are fairly reasonably priced but also fairly mediocre. My daughter and I took a dip in the refreshingly cool swimming pool which has a swim-up bar.

The overall feeling I had about the park was that it was very new and very well-maintained. It is true that there are extra charges for many of the activities (spa treatments, massages, scuba/snuba, dolphin adventures, etc.), but the a la carte approach worked great for us and we found many things to do that were included in the admission price. We mostly wanted a relaxing day at a beautiful beach, and that's what we got.

Chakanaab Nat Park is a "must" for visiting the island. It is a beautiful place to spend the day, or just an afternoon. Many things to do-- or none at all. Several vendors onsite & service is never a problem. Great place to do your initial 'check out' dives before hitting the boats too! Take a camera
