“It's a DIVE resort!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 13, 2012

This was our second visit to SCC--our first was five years ago. If you want luxury or to party all night, this is not the place for you. However, if you want to dive, it's pretty close to ideal.

#1. Location: Close enough to downtown to walk--and very close to a huge Wall-mart type store where you can get food, drinks, sunscreen, clothes, etc. However, the boat rides to the dive sites are quite long and some of the smaller boats are on the slow side.

#2. The rooms: Yes, the beds are, shall we say, firm, but the rooms are large and have lots of space for all your dive gear, a balcony, and, most importantly, really hot water and lots of it. Also, everything is extremely clean. They have water coolers on each floor and provide all guests with a pitcher.

#3. The food: the breakfast buffet has something for everyone (including lots of fruit); lunch is a salad bar, plus American or Mexican items, and dinner is an appetizer, entree, and dessert. Drinks are extra. It's not particularly fancy or gourmet, but it's good and filling. They have a Mexican-style BBQ once a week with a pinata.

#4. The pool is tiny, there are hammocks facing the water, a pier and a shore dive, and NO BEACH. I can't imagine how bored the non-divers must be here. IMHO, if you want a place with lots of activities that include diving, go somewhere else. But if diving is your focus, and you like to be around other divers, this is a good place to be.

#5. Service is generally excellent and the price is hard to beat. Bring your own towels for the boat and your own lock for your dive locker. And request Geiser for your divemaster--he was excellent!

Room Tip: If you stay near the dive shop, you'll hear the sound of banging tanks in the morning. However...

This was our second trip to Cozumel for diving and we chose Scuba Club Cozumel because we stayed last year at Hotel Cozumel and didn’t like it. I’m glad we tried SCC because this is now our hotel of choice when we come to dive. It was everything we hoped for – clean room, quiet hotel, on the water, and a great dive operation.

First of all, to reiterate past statements, if you do not dive or snorkel, then SCC would not be for you. This hotel caters to divers and there is one thing on the agenda – diving….everything else is second. It would be as if you were straight and ended up on a gay / lesbian cruise…..

Our room was #42, ground level and was on the dive shop side of the hotel. Little patio with a nice view of the water and “beach”. (When I say beach…there is no beach per se, just sand.) King sized bed was firm but not rock hard as some of the other beds we’ve discovered in Cozumel. Air conditioner was loud so we tried to sleep with the windows open and the fan on – however the fan sounded like it was going to fall off….but overall the room was nice. In speaking with other guests, some of whom have been coming to SCC for years, tell us that every room is different. For example the room next to us also had a king sized bed, but the bathroom was upstairs, and they had a wraparound patio on the water. This is the room we want for our next visit. The chambermaids are fantastic.

There was some conversation about ground floor vs. upper floor. With the ground floors, you are close to the action and don’t have to walk far….but the view is not great. On the upper floors, better sea view, but to have to schlep your equipment up two to three flights of stairs if you don’t use a locker.

Restaurant and bar – this is where everyone gathers for the meals, and for the most part guests will stay in their groups. Food was a solid average / good with a sprinkle of really good...nothing to write home about. Every day there is a lunch and dinner special. And once a week, there is a Mexican Beach party with BBQ. On the night of our BBQ, they had some of the best carne asada that we have ever had --- our compliments to the chef. The servers are wonderful and attentive.

Dive operation -- The dive operation is very good and efficient. You are usually assigned to the same boat for your stay so you will get to know the crew and your dive master. We had Aeriel as our DM and he has this uncanny knack for finding the smallest sea creatures….he even found a female octopus with her eggs in a small hole….but then he knows these reefs like the back of his hand.

We were weathered out on one day of diving, so the dive shop offered us a discount on the two tank twilight / night dive. My recommendation is to do that dive!

Room Tip: You won't need an alram clock if you are by the dive shop....the clanging of the tanks will wake...

I did not stay at the Scuba Club, but I dove with them for two days. Crew was safe and professional. We did a couple drift dives and clarity at 100 feet was UNREAL! Could still see the surface. Would recommend this dive shop time and time again, they know the best local spots depending on the weather and water conditions. If you dive, do your self a solid and hook up with Scuba Club Cozumel. Can't comment on the accommodation of the hotel.

Our room was a first floor, room 40. Large, stairs to the bathroom were a pain to climb and on the bare feet. Entire building is concrete w/stucco, incl. bed pedestal, spare "bed" pedestal, night stands and shelves. Great A/C but weather was perfect. Dive shop is well run but Nitrox is pricey ($10/tank). Dive boat was very large Cat. and we had 16 divers at one time w/3 DMs. Plan on at least a 45 minute boat ride for the dive sites. Shore diving at resort is OK and is free. Did not do night dive but heard it was terrific. Optional wreck dive available, a mine-sweeper. Everything not included cost extra and is pricey. Geyser is a terrific DM, and Buddha is most helpful of crew. Good dive briefings with safety a priority. Our only DM was Geyser, and he really paid attention and made sure we were in the game.
Meals are varied, with three choices for dinner, menu or one special for lunch and "buffet" (served) for breakfast. Good bar and good service. This is a "no frills" resort, no TV, phones, but has variable wi-fi depending on room. Concrete does tend to restrict the signal. The diving is really great, large fish and a lot of them. Nurse Sharks, Eagle Rays, huge Grouper, lobster, crabs, rays, eels, and really healthy reefs and flats. We were somewhat anxious about diving Mexico due to stories heard but we would definitely come back to this resort. There is a Dive Shop across the street owned by the resort that is top notch, clean and well run. The Management is very responsive. We were not impressed with the housekeeping, and, except for the towels and sundries, we were not sure the housekeeper did anything to the bathroom. Overall, worth the money for the accommodations, and the diving was awesome. We would not hesitate to return.

Room Tip: Get a ocean-view room on the first floor as the stairs are a pain and sometimes steep. Some rooms h...

Rooms: nothing fancy, no tv or alarm clock. Tile floors and simple furniture. Our room had an ocean view balcony which was nice. Plenty of room to lay out your gear to dry for the next day.
Food: all inclusive. Breakfast is simple cafeteria style and they ask you for your dinner choice at that time. Lunch is simple menu made to order. Dinner is the same unless you make a reservation for the one restaurant which we did one night. That food was very good.

Scuba: the on-site scuba shop and dock was excellent! Daily morning and afternoon boats as well as some night dives that you can sign up for. Went to a variety of dive sites and you can also get a tank anytime and just jump right off the dock in front of the hotel to do some diving or snorkeling in their little lagoon.

Location: there was a small sandy beach area but it is mostly rocky shores. An easy 10 minute walk to the town square where you can find restaurants, shops, and music at night.

We had a very nice time at Scuba Club. The diving was good- the thing that we especially appreciated were that we were kept separated from the large dive groups. We were on a boat of either 8 or 6. There was also a conspicuous absence of less-experienced divers, which is what made us give up on ScubaDu at the Intercontinental. Aside from spotty wifi, the accommodations were perfectly fine. The food was good enough. Being in town was nice. We would be happy to stay at SCC again. Our goal for our next trip is to combine diving with an AOW course- we realized that we could have done this at SCC with ease.

This was our first trip to Cozumel and Scuba Club Cozumel. We had a good, clean room with an excellent view (located on second floor, top right of web cam shot). The food was good, although we did go into town for one dinner.

Ariel was our DM and he did an excellent job as did the crew of the Reef Star. They were all very attentive to our needs and provided scenic and safe dives. My wife who is a non diver enjoyed her stay at SCC also. We will return to SCC again next year.
