Playa Azul is a true retreat! Every one at the hotel was so kind and helpful. We took a wonderful snorkeling trip arranged by the onsite dive group. Breakfast every morning was terrific. No menu just tell them what you want and it appears! excelent coffee and fresh squeezed OJ! The room was very clean, wonderful ocean view and good air con! The hotel was quite which is rare in other hotels we have stayed at in the area. We have stayed in several other spots in Cozumel but will definately return to Playa Azul. The beach is a true beach and good for walking too!

A wonderful small hotel feel. Good quality free breakfast buffet. Very good food in choice of two restaurants. Very good snorkeling right off beach. I am not a golfer, but went along with my husband for the ride. Beautiful grounds.

My wife and I stayed at Playa Azul for 8 nights and we are ready to go back tomorrow. This little gem is all we asked for and more. It was a family oriented facility. but it was not a bunch of little screaming kids. The service was awesome, the rooms clean and well-attended, and the food in the restaurant was so good we hesitated to go anywhere else. The staff is very accomodating and will help you line up activities such as car rental, deep sea fishing, golf or whatever else suits your fancy. Speaking of golf, if you like to play, Playa Azul has a special arrangement with the Cozumel Country Club which is only five minutes up the street. Guests at Playa Azul simply pay the cart fee of $30/per person and that's it- regular greens fees are $160PP. My wife and I are both accomplished amateurs and we found the Nicklaus course fun and fair. The greens were excellent as were the bent grass fairways. Watch out for the water hazards as there are salt water crocodiles inhabiting most of the water hazards. See one of my pictures! We snorkeled in front of the hotel and saw a lot of neat coral and fish. There is a pretty strong current flowing from left to right as you stand on land, so I either walked to the south about 400 yards and got in where there is a ladder and floated to our hotel or got in at our hotel and floated to the north and walked back. We were in the oceanfront master jacuzzi suite on the 4th floor, but in retrospect, we didn't need/use the jacuzzi, so I will most likely downgrade to the ocean front suite. There is a nice little beach bar and any number of thatched palapas to shelter oneself from the sun. The beach is probably one of the nicest on the island as well. I just can't begin to say enough about this facility. We have travelled a lot in the Caribbean and Mexico and seldom have I felt so strongly about a place like Playa Azul. E-mail me with questions at garylyoungberg@msn.com

We’ve just returned from two weeks on Cozumel, spending 11 days @ Playa Azule and 3 days @ Melia Conzumel (extenuating circumstances). The highlights of Playa Azule are snorkelling, scuba diving and golfing,. The hurricane two years ago swept the white sand out to sea and it has not been replaced so although the waterline is rocky, snorkelling and scuba are not affected, and there is plenty of sand for sunbathing.

We heard many positive features of Playa Azule locally, and heard many more from repeat clients. The package included a breakfast buffet and golf; cost of the cart is borne by the player, i.e., $30 USD/person/day, unlimited golf on the one charge. (We met a couple that had golfed 47 holes non-stop. We left our clubs at the course. Our caddy, Francisco, was quick to get our clubs, secure them onto the cart, have our shoes and clubs cleaned, and upon completion of the game, present us with an ice-cold white facecloth to refresh. The marshals, Craig and Rafael, were informative and helpful. Angel and Rosalba in the lunch bar were attentive, quick and interesting; we enjoyed chatting with them.

Golfing was different ... beautiful course filled with unique oddities: iguanas galore of all shapes and sizes all over the cart path and on the warm rocks surrounding the water hazards; a myriad of wonderfully plumed birds; hairy, black pigs running across the fairways; skinny raccoons and small turtles; ever-growing massive mud-bee hives nested on dead trees; lacrosse-ball sized tarantulas in the bunkers (yeuch); and last but not least ... crocodiles! Apparently there are also small alligators and armadillos but we didn't see any. Needless to say, we did not bother rummaging through the mangroves to retrieve errant balls and there were many!

The staff at Playa Azule was gracious, accommodating, knowledgeable, great senses of humour. Hernan and Yassir at the front desk were two ultra-pleasant men. Both cheerful and prepared to help in any way; cabs, free internet, securing our golf times, etc. In the Breakfast Buffet, Charly the greeter, always remembered our beverage preferences; Luis, Jose, Tomas, Gilbert, were cheerful and quick with refills while Jamie the pancake-omelet guy was great. At dinner, we had Julio and Carlos who were fabulous: good humoured, happy, and ready to please. Marcielo and Kermit were the smiling two bartenders.

The food in general was good. One thing is certain: the international cuisine of Vancouver truly is excellent and second to NONE!

The room was fine. Upon arrival our bed was beautifully decorated with towels, flower petals and leaves. There were celebrations taking place outside, but not bothersome: not a 5-star but it is certainly adequate.

We walked to town a couple of times with no safety concerns. San Miguel is a cruiseship stop, 7 ships/day, 6 days/week. Hence, as locals were keen to make a sale, all were pleasant and prepared to bargain. We took the ferry to Playa Del Carmen for a day.

Would we go again? Likely not. To get from Cancun to Cozumel is an ordeal. There are no direct flights exiting Vancouver, and as we are in our 70’s, changing planes twice is not conducive to travel for us.

Would we recommend Playa Azule? Most likely. A new structure is slated for the adjoining site, and if golfing is your main attraction, you won’t be disappointed,

We have been there twice and enjoyed it both times. The golf course is very good and was in great shape. After paying one cart fee you can play all day with no more fees. The service at the Hotel was very warm and polite. Rooms were clean and beach while small was clean. Good snorkling right off the beach. A cab ride downtown was $8 and there are many great restaurants. La Veranda and Casa Mission both excellent. The Hotel is small and therefore you get to know the other guests who were all friendly. We enjoyed our stay and will go back.

We spent 5 nights here in Aug 2009 with our two kids ages 6 & 11. It was because of TripAdvisor that we found this gem. I didn't want to review it b/c I'm afraid of it getting too popular and it becoming a mega resort, so owners if you read this please don't change!
This place was perfect for us. We were on the top floor (4th) and had an incredible view of the beach and sea. We could also see the pool & talk to the kids in the pool from our balcony or v.v., a real plus. The resort is nice and small. You can get anywhere on the property in a min or two, so no long treks to the beach or worries if you left something in your room, also we weren't worried about the kids wondering off. We had a standard room with two double beds, large shower & no musty smell:-) TV was small but we didn't mind, it wasn't on much. The breakfast was Very Good and included in room which made this such a great deal and very affordable. We loved the snorkeling right off the beach. We brought our own gear. The Dive Co is excellent! Very professional and friendly. We had intended to just have my husband dive one day since we had the kids, but the dive company arranged for the kids to come along and snorkel while we took turns diving. They had a separate guide on board for the snorkeling This worked out perfect, keeping in mind that our kiddos are comfortable being on boats and are excellent swimmers...so not sure if this would work for everyone. If your planning to dive a lot the resort is far from the dive spots so you'll spend quite bit of time on the boat just getting to/from the reefs. We had excellent to great service from the front desk, restaurants, beach bar, housekeeping etc. We rented an old VW, but there seemed to be plenty of taxi's around. We didn't use the golf course or spa so I can't comment on them. It is very quiet there, especially at night:-) Oh and our kids loved the turtle garden out front.

The hotel is very clean (although the swimming-pool could use a little paint job).

It is a small hotel : fifty rooms, most of them with direct view of the ocean. Ours (#307, "oceanview") was spacious and confortable. It had a large balcony, a king-size bed with a very good mattress, a two square-meter shower cabin with plenty of hot water, ample space for clothes, a safe, etc... The cleaning staff was very discreet, anything but noisy, and they would not mind making the room quite late.

Don't forget that the hotel does not claim to be a "luxury" one in the trivial meaning of the term. It is, officially, a three-stars, which in our view is a blessing because it is far from the major All-Inclusive type that we know very well from experience and often makes you wonder if you are really changing locations. The architecture is simple yet classy, the decoration in very good taste and truly Mexican. In fact, this is what we call real luxury. The atmosphere is cozy, the staff very friendly and efficient.

The breakfast is excellent. Real orange juice. Superb coffee. Eggs on demand (like everywhere), but also delicious waffles. No leftovers in sight : the place being so small, they'd be much too obvious ! You may sit steps away from the water.

The beach is small but very clean. The sand is groomed every day. Of course, there might be some occasional flying plastic next door, but the hotel should not be expected to clean beyond its own grounds. There are enough loungers and palapas for everybody. No need to reserve.

Food and drinks: we ate there on three occasions. Very good cuisine. Great mezcal. Surprisingly good Malbec from Argentina. Mexican dishes carefully cooked and presented. Nice setting. Good service.

Cozumel has such a great variety of excellent restaurants, cheap and easy to reach (80 pesos from Playa Azul to San Miguel), that it does not make sense to go all-inclusive, especially if you want to try the local cuisine (see our separate report) and have maybe fewer, but less watered-down drinks. What's more, some of the AI in the vicinity look too much like soul-less highrises, at least in our opinion.

We will return to Playa Azul and recommend it to our friends.

NB Past experiences in Mexico : Camino Real Zaashila (Huatulco), Copacabana (Playa-del-Carmen), Camino Real (Puebla), Camino Real El Convento (Oaxaca), Maria-Isabel Sheraton (Mexico City), etc. etc...
