“Another wonderful time”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 21, 2014

Second visit (after last year same time) …this time for 3 1/2 weeks.
Excellent again. The hotel staff keep the place so clean.
Spouse golfed EVERY day with other friends staying. I relaxed on beach, swam in the ocean every day. Beautiful clear water.
Staff are so friendly. They are all great but my two new favourites were Eduardo and Alejandro!
Enjoyed meeting up with friends at the beach bar every early evening.
Saw the dauphins several times this year.

There was a new menu and even after 3 weeks we could find new things and keep interested. We didn't do all-inclusive as I like to also eat out in the town at times. My favourites on the menu were the Playa Azul Shrimp (coconut), beet gazpacho and the flan.Fish of the day meal was always excellent too. Buffet breakfast is awesome and Angel makes great omelettes or eggs etc.
Ordered lunch at the beach bar most days.
Spouse caught fish from the end of the dock and twice the hotel chef cooked them for him!

Good snorkelling right off beach.
Spouse and 3 friends booked a fishing trip…be careful who you book with. There's was dodgy, booked via the guy at the sea-doo place on beach. The guy brought bait that was very old and useless!
We went to Woody's in town several nights for really good live entertainment, Pako was especially good. Loved going to Kondesa, Especias, Mission.
Mosaicoz in the Square has the best pizza and great for people watching.
Buccanos at Night is next door …only open Fri and Sat night, excellent food.
This year we discovered Hiroba sushi, went at least 4 times. Very good and hit the sushi craving spot!

Our only bad experience was going to Coconuts at the far side of the island….horrible tourist trap, rude waiter, so expensive!
At the hotel beach the bugs were bad this year….as soon as the sun goes down. So many bites, drove me crazy.
Researched once we were home (too late!) and found the "mosquitoes" there are not fazed by deet…so forget the usual water based repellents. Use oil based bug spray or even baby oil (according to internet!)

Another wonderful holiday. Sad to leave. Look forward to going again. Thanks Fernando and all the wonderful staff, you really make the place so perfect. Love Sue x

Greetings from Playa Azul!!
It is a pleasure to read that you had a great time, with new favorite’s meals and staff!!
We appreciate a lot your comment with all the details of our beach, hotel, breakfast and staff; and also of Cozumel in general.
It is too bad that you had a bad experience with the fishing. At Playa Azul hotel we have Bluedream a dive center with all water activities such as diving, snorkeling, fishing and the services are recommended by the hotel. Hopefully you will come again and try with Chris any of these services and you will enjoy it 100%.

We all look forward to having the pleasure of welcoming you again very soon.
Sincerely
Ana

I tell you I'm used to 4 star resorts with the airfare prices lower then most we choose to fly to Cozumel, and the resort playa Azul was are resort choice with golf included, you have to pay for cart, fee $31 each, the Cozumel country club is a $30 golf course, meaning 2.5 stars out of 5, but we enjoyed are self's Crocodile's, Iguana's, plenty of wildlife, with a grill, and beverages, and great service. Also breakfast included at the resort, buffet style, a chief will cook an omelet to your liking, then there is pre made eggs potato's bacon, sausage, beans on warming plates, plenty of fruit cereals yogurt OJ and coffee of course, and always great service breakfast is served beach front under a patio over looking the Caribbean,
What was a shocker for me was how old the area is I'm thinking the area was built in the 70's some parts not kept up at all and some parts are in good condition, for the Playa it was a little gem, after you get to the resort you can enjoy your surroundings, the room was clean and kept in good condition, I would suggest 3rd floor or 4th floor although I believe all rooms have a view of the Caribbean, Bonus factor there is snorkeling out front, with plenty of sea life, the waves do have to be in the right direction for better snorkeling.
The downtown area is intimidating but not to worry we had good luck there the people were friendly and there were some romantic restaurants with great food, Kinta and Guido's
We rented a car but I think we would of better of with the Taxi's
The cliental is an older crowed 50's thru the 70's, golfers, quiet at night, with plenty of drinking around the beach bar during the day, lunch food available,

Room Tip: Top floors will be more scenic

Smaller and NOT all inclusive. If you want to play golf and relax, this is your best option. The staff is exceptional, friendly and accomodating. Great breakfast provided, nice open air restaurant. Nice clean rooms, older but not worn. For those who prefer to plan their own meals and fun, this is the place.

Room Tip: All rooms are placed on the ocean side. Just avoid the once closest to the elevator. While the hotel...

Spent a week in January at Playa Azul with wife and daughter, revisiting some of the greatest snorkel sites like Columbia Shallows. The hotel is small, quiet, clean, and beachfront with a great in-house restaurant and bar (Kermit is indeed real). Friendly and helpful staff. Deluxe double oceanfront room with balcony had plenty of room for the three of us, like a suite. The location is in a quiet part of town, away from the busy tourist main street. Many very attractive interior decorative features and a turtle garden right out front. Two really good restaurants directly across the street (the one on the right is lobster only, on the left is a full menu.) Highly recommend Playz Azul for romance or families. Did not get to the golf course, but it comes with the room and adds tremendous value, judging by the number of golf bags going to and coming back from it. Wife and daughter enjoyed the spa. And due to the cruise ship boom, Cozumel has become a world-class restaurant destination.

Room Tip: Deluxe double oceanfront well worth the extra.

We take a golf group to Cozumel every winter and have stayed at the Playa Azul twice and loved it both times. The breakfast and golf package is perfect. The food is excellent and the golf is a real bargain. The rooms are reasonable, clean, comfortable and offer a great view. The staff is friendly and tries very hard to accommodate any and all requests. I love that it is a smaller quaint hotel. I highly recommend this hotel.

Playa Azul is perfect for people who want a small hotel with fantastic service. The rooms are clean and comfortable, the food good and the beach bar the best in the Caribbean. It is the staff that make the place. They are friendly, kind and will do anything to make your visit perfect.

If you are looking for a long beach to walk this is not the place but the water front is very pretty though it can be challenging, if there is a surge, to get into the sea.

The best dive shop on the island, Blue Dream, is on site and the boat goes from the pier. The golf course is near by and great fun to play.

Like many of the people we've met there we have returned multiple times because of the value and the staff. We don't use the all inclusive option. The breakfast is a full spread and sets us up well for golf or diving.

Cozumel is a safe destination with a different feel from the rest of Mexico. We go into town for dinner at least every other night. There are great restaurants and as two women we've never had a problem wandering around in the evening.

We returned yesterday and we're planning next year already.
