“Loved the Cozumel Country Club”
Reviewed December 27, 2004

I just played 10 straight rounds of golf over 10 days at the Cozumel Country Club in Cozumel, Mexico. I had read prior reviews of the golf course which were less than flattering. While I would agree that paying the "rack" rate of $149 to play this course would be a little steep , it is possible to arrange better rates either through your hotel or cruise line. We stayed at the Sol Melia Resort so my unlimited play was $250 flat plus a $23 cart fee. Since I played 10 times my cost was minimal. There was 1 hole that was converted to a par three from a usual par 4 due to fairway maintenance, but other than that the course was in fine shape , the greens were especially smooth and true. It is a tight golf course surrounded by jungle so unless you are very accurate off the tee you had better plan on needing 6 balls per round. The course is managed by clubcorp which manages Pinehurst Country Club amongst other great properties. They do a fine job here too. There is a nice driving range as well. I've played all over the world and would rate this course overall a 7. There are better courses in Mexico and the Carribean but if you are going to Cozumel and are a golfer it is worth the trip.

“Over priced for condition”
Reviewed November 26, 2004

Played the course the week of Thanksgiving. The course is undergoing a lot of renovation at this time. The first two holes are playing as par 3's while they are raising the fairways about 4' to keep them from flooding. #6 has a temporary green do to a fungus. Adding sand to the front nine traps. You would be better off playing the back nine twice than to adventure to the front. It only cost me $30 to play and in the current condition it wasn't worth much more than that. The course is to be finished sometime in January 05. Since it's the only game in town it doesn't leave you any other place to go. You can always take the ferry to Play del Car and play that course. It is in fantastic shape.

“Par 8 for sure!”
Reviewed May 13, 2004

TOUGH but FUN course! Well-maintained - funny how the soil is very thin on bare rock. Had to keep breaking tees to stubs so they would stick in ground! No margin for error or the rainforest gets your ball! Plan on losing all or most of them - offer the greenskeepers a few pesos and you can get a refill of balls that he found around the course. We paid $3 for 25 nike balls.... but we left over half of those behind for you...

Carts fees are high ($24/person or $48 couple - ouch!) Add clubs at $30/each and "free" golf cost us >$100. Regular greens fee is $158.

Let's play again!

“Super Course”
Reviewed March 25, 2004

3/15/2004 I had the pleasure of playing this fabulous course during a cruise ship excursion and was totally impressed with the course. The layout makes for a very challenging round, especially from the normal tees. The only down element is the sand traps. They have presently used local 'cand', that once it gets wets turns back into what felt like coral when you have to hit from it. They are importing (per the course starter) sand that will correct the problem but it will be a bit before that is completed. Since the course was cut out of the jungle staying on the fairway is a must. If the ball heads out of bounds you will not want to head out 'into the bush', and in many cases it will be impossible to do so. Take along a ample supply of balls.

Greens and fairways were in excellent shape, and they have a great practice range between the pro shop and the first tee.

Overall well worth the cost.

“Recent trip to Cozumel 12/2003”
Reviewed January 3, 2004

My wife ,my 2 children aged 21 and 16 and I visited Cozumel from December 23,2003 to January 2,2004. we stayed at the Park Royal which is an all-inclusive. while the food was not the greatest the staff was very pleasant and the accomodations were good. We particularily enjoed Prima Tratorria. This is an excellent restaurant. In addition we used the services of Eco-Dive. They have specialists for first time divers.
I would be glad to answer any questions if you plan to visit cozumel in the near future.
