Owner description: Although not as popular as Chichén Itzá, these ancient Mayan ruins are noteworthy in their own right, as this is the site where Mayan women paid tribute to the goddess of love and fertility.

“Great Mayan Site!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 9, 2014

I recently traveled to Cozumel, Mexico on a cruise ship. We decided to take a tour which included an overview of the city, these Mayan Ruins, and a trip to the beach. These ruins were quite interesting and our tour guide (the one who was on our whole tour) was very informative. The shops that were around were quite affordable and we found some good handmade souvenirs. It was a short tour which was great with my seven year old. See this while you're in Cozumel!

“Interesting!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 7, 2014

Get a tour guide to explain the buildings and their importance. Ixchel was a major figure in Cozumel's culture and in the Mayan civilization. According to our guide, an additional section will soon be opened which includes a pok-a-pok court. No vendors to bother you once you pass the entrance. Definitely worth a visit.

“Great Historic Site”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 7, 2014

Be aware, like everywhere else, they have about a dozen shops that you have to walk past to get to the ruins. Regardless, you will enjoy the site.

If you have the time, you can get a personal guide that informs you of EVERYTHING. We opted to explore on our own and did fine. There is a lot of walking, so have your walking shoes on.

There is one thing that I should mention. As you drive the few miles from the main road, you will see a few cenotes off to the side. We stopped, explored and took a few pictures but we seemed to be the only ones, as all the cars just flew by.

It you have the time, stop a few times and explore.

“Very interesting but a lot of reconstruction”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 6, 2014

Very cool to learn about the rich history and culture of the Mayans. The site had a number of buildings to see but they were largely reconstructed. The tour was nice but didn't allow time to explore the site extensively. Better to go on your own and take the time to visit properly.

“Interesting but....”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 6, 2014

We visited San Gervasio, in July. VERY HOT. We did the tour on our own so might have enjoyed it more with a guide. We spent a little over an hour and 1/2 on site. All ruins are interesting due to their age and architecture but I would recommend going on over to Tulum if you want to be impressed.
