We come to Cozumel 1-2 times/year and almost always stay at Hotel Cozumel (we've also stayed at Cozumel Palace for special occasions). This was a 10 day vacation and we decided to do 5 days here and 5 days at the palace since it was our 10 year anniversary. We wanted both kinds of vacation - 5 days where we were at Hotel Coz and didn't do all inclusive, walked downtown, etc and then 5 days at a very fancy, pampering, all inclusive at Palace. We were not disappointed. Our 5 days at Hotel Coz was just as always, a very nice, pleasant place to sleep after days of diving and exploring. We love that it's across from Dive Paradise (best dive shop ever!) and has a really nice set up of lockers and rinse tanks for gear. Yes, you have to tank a tunnel under the street to go to the beach but it's a realy nice (although small) beach! We are not sun worshippers but like to be outside napping/reading in the afternoons - they have a great little shaded area that we pull chairs into and it's so relaxing. Very nice snorkeling and it's great for shore diving. $6 gets you a tank and we've seen everything from octopus to seahorses to burrfish. Whoever complained about the locker and towel fees if you lose the cards/key - this is STANDARD for lots of hotels all over the Caribbean. I will agree, the entertainment isn't great - we passed on watching the evening shows. As far as musty rooms, Cozumel is a high-humidity location so this is an unfortunate side effect. Things just don't dry very well even in the air conditioning, so bring extra swimsuits! The food is not great (breakfasts are fine) so we never do all-inclusive. We walk the block or two to Chedraui (kind of like a Walmart) and get a couple bottles of coke, rum, some snacks (Takis are the BEST!) and a few other food items that can pass for lunch after our dive trips, then we go into town for some amazing dinners. This trip, we tried checking out bikes - I wish we'd done this sooner! We had a lot of fun riding around town, into the marina, etc.
We were here over New Year's, and we never saw if they were doing something special for the holiday. A lot of places advertise special dinners, but Hotel Coz did not so we left and went to dinner and to celebrate elsewhere.
One small thing - this was a special anniversary for us, and when we booked we let them know this. When we checked in, I saw that it was noted (in Spanish) that this was a special vacation but it was never acknowledged. No biggie, I guess.
Will be back very soon!
