Employees excellent. Best beach we've seen in 4 visits to cozumel. Beach at Melia just to the north looked awful. There's a concrete pier that keeps all that nasty sea weed and rust colored water at Melia and away from the crystal clear water at the El Coz beach. Bar drinks are a little weak. Order beer or wine. Restaurant that requires a reservation is good but can take up to an hour for dinner. Buffet food is just ok. Room service food was very good and included in the package.
** Complained about bar closing early to mgmt and they told me they were going to fire the head waiter. That seemed hardly fair to me and told mgmt that would ruin my vacation if he fired the guy. Mgmt then said they wouldn't fire him. Don't complain about anything or they may fire the person responsible.

Room Tip: ocean view on a higher floor. rooms on the north wing are older but twice as big as the south rooms.

My whole family -- myself and my husband, our 17 year old daughter and 14 year old son were very happy with our 10 day vacation at Cozumeleno. We did a lot of research, hoping to find the perfect place for our family vacation. It can get a bit confusing reading all the reviews, with one bad easily wiping out the good ones. We ended up following a lot of advice that we read in the reviews and that was helpful. We were in the newer South tower with a gorgeous beach view, we made almost nightly reservations at the restaurant which was a very elegant and nice culinary break from the buffet (which we found decent enough, although found adding condiments and sauces and mixing things up added a lot more flavor to the relatively bland keep-everyone-satisfied foods). We loved having Fernando for our waiter, as he was friendly, professional, and very attentive. We appreciated the hard work of the head waiter William, who always seemed to be making sure all the details were tended to. Our family got a kick out of having Jose, the piano man play background music. We often went up and made requests and he knew every one of them. We found all the people working there to be extremely helpful and friendly. We brought lots of dollar bills with us and handed them out freely to the hard working, deserving folks there. We loved the "activities" coordinators who worked hard to keep things fun and lively. The more you get involved, the more fun it is. Sit in front and let yourself get picked for going on stage for dance lessons or some other embarrassing but fun activity. Join in the water aerobics, take a bike ride. There are lots of activities, but we found not that many people actually did them.

The water was fantastic and there were white sandy beaches just in front of the hotel. We HIGHLY recommend getting snorkeling equipment (or bringing your own which we did) and heading to the left of the hotel. If you walk for about five minutes, you will pass a fenced in residence, and then the shell of an abandoned restaurant. Just past the restaurant is a lovely little cove to enter the water. Put on your snorkel gear and head to the right, snorkeling back to the hotel. Stay close to the reefs and cliffs whenever possible and you will see some beautiful fish and coral, much nicer than the stuff in front of the hotel.

The only thing we were consistently disappointed in was the room service. They always seemed to get the orders wrong, or forgot important things (like silverware), and the food was just pretty lame. Otherwise, we were very happy with the room, the cleanliness, the view, the noise level and the overall experience. Personally I was disappointed with how many Americans seemed to fill the place. It would have been nice to get a broader sampling of the world, oh well. This is a frivolous complaint for going to an all inclusive hotel situation in another country, but we went to Cozumeleno because my 14 year old son was tired of our wild trips trepsing around the world and he wanted "all the food he could get and a luxury setting" and that is exactly what he got. He was completely satisfied! And for that matter, so were the rest of us.

We got a great deal on Living Social for 7 nights. The food was ok, better in the sit down restaurant but you need to reserve a space there each night and there is a dress code. We really like that. The service was excellent and the staff was right on in clearing plates, bringing you a drink. The birds eating out of the food in the main room and flying around while your eating and pooping on stuff probably wasn't as sanitary as it should have been.
The beach equipment was in good shape for snorkeling, kayaking. The bikes were usable but were older beachcomber type bikes. All part of the package of all-inclusive which was nice.
The rooms were kind of dated and the furniture was very worn and needed cleaning. The bed was very uncomfortable but we had them put 2 egg crates on top of the king size bed and that made it tolerable.
I thought the value was great and the location was fabulous. The issues I have mentioned are all management problems like the nets to keep the birds out of the dining room needing repair or the furniture needing to be cleaned, and better mattresses.
The staff definitely made lemonade with lemons.

This is my 4th time at El Cozumeleno so clearly we love it! We got married there last year on the beach and this year brought our newly adopted 14 year old. The service is superb and there is something to do for everyone. Go see Teo from Expedia tours and he will hook you up with the most incredible adventures. The cleanliness is top notch and the food is great. The Activities team is so friendly and entertaining and the shows are great. I recommend spicing up the entertainment because I have seen the same shows every time I come. However, the live band is awesome! We always recommend this place to family and friends. Do yourself a favor and friend them on Facebook. We booked this last trip through their online auction and got it for a STEAL.

Room Tip: Ask for the tower with ocean view. Request a fan!

We booked our trip through groupon and saved a lot of money.
The service was very good and the staff was always willing to help. There were some disappointing things, the food was not very good only had a few good meals, the self service beverage bar never had ice,and the ice cram machine only worked a couple of days we were there.
The room was very big and clean and had daily house keeping service.
They had a lot of activities to choose from every day through the activity center and a few theme nights which was nice.
Great beach and very clear water, they have snorkel equipment to use, sea kayaking, mini golf, ping pong, billiards and much more.
This was our first trip to El Coz and would return.
Would like to see the food quality improve
.Most taxis were good but charge a lot to get to the airport and won't bargain -
We went into town one day and found a taxi driver to drive us around a little and were able to bargain with him for a good price.

Room Tip: ask for the new part of the hotel

Great food and excellent service from the waitstaff and bartenders. The beach area was kept clean and waiters were good about bringing us drinks on the beach. The common areas were nice and kept clean. The rooms weren't quite as nice. The furniture and decor are very dated in the rooms. Worn carpet on the stairs, stained bathroom counters and stained grout in shower. It was clean, just really old. Great place if you aren't looking for super luxury.

Room Tip: The deluxe rooms are huge and definitely worth the extra fee. Includes mini fridge with sodas, cold...

My 14 year old son and i stayed 6 nights here in June. We stayed in the newer section and had a nice large room with a great view. We were given a king bed with a huge lump down the middle, but I still slept well. I never heard my neighbors except when they were outside the doors. The doors slam loudly to close. The rooms smelled of mildew and cleaners. The towels are large and well worn and stained.

The food was generally not good. I did not eat at the reservation restaurant, but did eat at buffet as well as attempted room service (couldn't seem to get a menu). i liked the fresh pineapple and mango as well as the peel and eat shrimp the few times available. i only eat veg. or seafood so was limited a bit by that. The only fish was either very small portion when ordering tacos at the cook station, or some baked in various cream? sauce on buffet. I tried ordering room service: Guacamole was gross...don't think it had avocado at all, just thick green cornstarch substance. Tried to order a fried fish and it never came...the chips and anything fried tasted like old grease.

The grounds are nice and there are plenty of activities, but I was only interested in the snorkeling (brought my own gear) It was pretty good, except for the people standing around throwing bread in the water then shrieking "get them away, get them away" while continuing to throw bread. And also kicking up a lot of sand making the water cloudy around them. i just swam away from those crowds. I saw a group of little reef squid and an octopus in addition to the usual fish.
My son was interested in the pools, but they were pretty crowded and dominated by certain groups during the day. We opted to swim in the evenings. We would have liked to use the hot tub, but white trash drunks sat in it ALL DAY dumping their beer and cigarette butts everywhere, i wouldn't let my son go near it. Like other reviewers have said...don't think they get out to pee. They just get drunk, loud and more and more obnoxious as the day goes on. Hard to relax and enjoy the place around people like that.
I will not do all-inclusive again. I would prefer to pay for a nice glass of wine and good food as well as a less rowdy pool scene/view from room. I would like to sit on my deck and hear the waves, not popular American music, loud drunks, and activities lead over a loud microphone. Lots of cigarette smokers!
The staff are nice, hard-working people. Will help with your bags even if not needed. They let us check in early. Easy to get a cab at hotel and anywhere you go.
