Upon arrival, we were impressed by the property ... large, two pools (although only one seemed to be used), a small beach (seemingly manmade) and two area for safe snorkeling (bouys), two restaurants and a snack grill. Food at the waterfront restaurant was 3/10, the italian restaurant food was amazing 9/10 and the snack grill was also great 8/10. The service is great, atleast 3-4 different people waiting on you to make sure you have everything you need. The concierge was very sweeet and helpful with their dinner and nightlife suggestions. the Room was the only drawback ... it wasnt as spacious as i expected for the price paid and everything felt damp, the pillows and sheets always felt cool and wet.
As a couple, we were able to enjoy side by side massages at their hotel spa (slightly pricey). Not many other couples were seen, mostly families away for the holidays.
Overall I had a very good experience.

Stayed here for 4 nights in late December 2012.

Presidente Inter-continental is about 15 minutes taxi ride from the airport and downtown. It positions itself as a luxury hotel, but is far from the quality of luxury hotels of Europe, Pacific islands, South Asia or United States.

While the rooms are generous in size, the building architecture is dated, the air conditioning in the room noisy, and the room equipment needs renovation.

The hotel has two main restaurants, both in the center of the hotel complex. We tried only El Carabeno for dinner. The food was fresh, well prepared, and served by an attentive team.

The downtown offers many nicer restaurants, culture rich streets, and nightlife. A visit to downtown requires a taxi ride, but ask the taxi driver the fare before you get out of the hotel area - twice the taxi drivers quoted rates much higher than the standard fare of 90 pesos one way, but immediately settled for the standard fare.

The hotel has two coastal fronts, which for convenience may be called house reefs. Having snorkeled / dived in almost all major reefs of the world, from Australia's great barrier reef to Maldives to Red Sea to Bonaire, we felt the reefs in front of Presidente Intercontinental is a poor 2 to 3 on a scale of 1 to 10 (with 10 as best). The south west one, which is next to the buffet restaurant, has a sunken metal platform, around which you see more fishes and aquatic life.

The hotel also offers a water sports center named Scuba Du. It is unreasonably expensive and on quality of experience / service, Scuba Du was a poor 3 on a scale of 1 to 10. You pay US$ 77 cash for 10+15+15 minute snorkeling stops at three reefs. If you do not carry cash, Scuba Du demands another US$ 10 for credit card charge. We decided to walk to Caleta marina, which is immediately next to the hotel, less than 5 minutes walk (ask the front desk where Caleta is). From Caleta marina, numerous boats leave for diving / snorkeling trip every morning and afternoon (we joined the trip going out, paid US$ 35-45 per person, snorkeled 20+40+45 minute each stop). From Caleta, you can also hire the whole boat for a private trip - something we did for 5 hours one day and paid direct. Shallow colombia, palancar, etc diving sites are far prettier than house reefs, a 7+ on 1 to 10 quality scale. We enjoyed the morning trips, not the one in the afternoon because thunderstorms and clouds gather, reducing light and visibility.

Presidente Intercontinental is a decent choice, but we felt it was not worth the US$500+ a night, and no where even close to the quality, experience and service that other luxury hotels in Asia/Europe/USA deliver for those nightly rates. If we visit Cozumel again, we are likely to consider the furnished luxury rental suites/villas on the island, rather than this hotel.

Room Tip: Beach facing rooms are better for views and sunsets.

We travel 3-4 months a year, mostly for leisure. We frequent five-star and boutique hotels and resorts. We are tough critics, but also appreciative when we discover a hotel that is exceptional. The Intercontinental Presidente in Cozumel has all the amenities of a lovely resort in a fun community, the hemisphere's best diving, spacious and comfortable rooms, excellent cuisine, etc. -- BUT the hallmark of this resort is its staff and unmatchable level of service. The Mayans are a proud and dignified people; nothing pleases them more than attending to your every need; the pride, confidence, generosity, and dedication of this staff makes them be far the greatest asset of this resort, and indeed a high mark to which other hotel operators should aspire. We have been recommending this resort to other seasoned travelers for nearly 30 years, virtually all of whom become returnees after they have had a taste of Presidente service. So, not only is the Presidente by far superior to any other accommodation on the Island of Cozumel, it's staff sets a high world-standard bar.

This is our Heaven on Earth for the past 20+ years. Can't imagine the real thing being any better! Truly this hotel is superb, that is, unless you're looking for a wild party atmosphere. Very quiet, secluded and revitalizing. I won't share our fave restaurant as we want to keep that secret :)

The hotel is about 15 minutes drive from the ferry port / centre of town, south along the coast road, so the location, which is in my opinion, ideal, being close enough to town to be convenient and cheap by taxi (M$ 90 = 8 USD). We were told by one of the elderly porters, who has worked there for a long while, that the hotel was built in the early 70s. The design is interesting modernist architecture which at the time I imagine would have been state of the art. It has, of course been extensively refurbished several times since then and it is well maintained, although of course the limitations of technology and standards generally at that time mean that the building and rooms are intrinsically of that period. For example, quite low ceilings in some of the public areas and the lobby and acoustic issues in the rooms. We were told by a member of staff that the hotel (like many others on the island was badly damaged by Hurricane Wilma in 2005) and was extensively remodelled afterwards.

As well as your regular sun lover, the hotel is ideal for people interested in either learning to dive (getting a PADI Open water certificate) or wanting to explore the dive sites around the island. There is a scuba diving concession on the hotel beach with dive boats picking up divers a few times in a day. There are numerous piers that allow you to either snorkel or scuba dive along the length of the beaches, together with a sunken barge 30 metres out. At the main beach we saw many species of fish including one barracuda that seemed to hang around. These facilities allow a very relaxed and easy introduction to diving.

Rooms
We stayed in 3 different rooms. The first and second were both reef rooms (rooms 3107 and 3111), and then a reef suite (3127) which are all located to the south side of the resort, the suite being the farthest. I understand there are 7 different types of room, including:

Beech view room
Beech front room
Reef front room
Reef front suite

The hotel is spread out along quite a long section of the coast, as the beech and reef front hotels are either single or double storey only. That means that if you get allocated a far room on either the south and especially the far north side, be prepared to do a lot of walking.

The two reef rooms were around 45 m2 on the ground floor (only ground level, no rooms above) and directly in front of a small strip of white (ish) sandy beech that was terminated by a concrete kerb and then became a rock pool sea line. There is a good sized terrace with a hammock and chairs and table. The suite is around 100 m2 and consists of 2 reef rooms in one unit.

The main problem with the reef rooms (and probably all the rooms) is the sound insulation. We could hear the woman next door coughing at regular intervals when she woke up, and the in-room breakfast they ordered at 6.30am every morning made a fair bit of noise. The balcony door and windows beach side are single glazed and the sound insulating properties could be better. I believe we were unlucky being placed next to this particular couple. Given the 1970s construction date of the building I am surprised that the owner or IHG did not try to improve the acoustic properties of the rooms, especially walls between rooms, balcony doors and window and especially the room entrance doors. The balcony doors and windows are white PVC plastic and fairly new, and the difference in cost between these single glazed units and double glazed ones would surely be 1 night's stay. The concierge / guest relationship manager (Jorge Louis) went out of his way to try to make us feel better, was very attentive and understanding and quickly upgraded us to a reef suite. This was first class guest relationship management. He also gave us some excellent recommendations for local restaurants, including those ones frequented by locals. In general, the Concierge provided exceptional service all round and should be highly commended.

Minor issues regarding the rooms are:
○ taste issues of some of the paintings in the rooms. The first room (3107) we were in (see photo) had a painting that was so dark and depressing that I took it off the wall, so I did not have to look at it. The painting in the suite was better.
○ The double doors to the bathroom are basic doors with gaps all round, that provide little privacy.
○ The design of the rooms and furniture could have been better.
§ The round tables are fine but cannot be used with the dining chairs provided as the chairs are too high. It is necessary to remove the chair cushion to fit you legs under the table.
§ The light switches do not control lights in a logical way
§ The shower and bath mixers are awkward. For example, the funnel pipe for the bath tap is so short that the water pours out over the overflow waste - it works but does not look great.
○ Sloping ceiling in reef and beach rooms and suites. Not a fan of sloping roofs, but for most people this may not be an issue.
○ The reef suite was around 100 m2 and was an amazing room. However, it was a like an enormous studio apartment. It would be more practical and functional to divide the bedroom and living area. Having an open plan living room and kitchen makes sense, but not living room and bedroom.

Things we liked in the rooms:
○ Decent size (reef rooms and suite - we did not see the other rooms)
○ Stunning beach front views and lots of windows.
○ Beautiful terrace with hammock
○ The beds are extremely comfortable and I believe in Europe / UK is called an Emperor size bed (2 m x 2 m ), so in other words 20 cm wider than a super King. The bed linen was excellent quality.
○ The travertine limestone in the bathrooms looks great and firs very well with the style of the hotel.
○ Coffee / tea maker with free coffee and tea.
○ Free wifi high speed internet
○ Good sized flat screen TV on fully adjustable wall bracket

Beaches and pool

The beaches appear to be made with imported white sand, and stretch 185 metres on the south side and 180 metres along the north side and there is a another beach in a sheltered bay between the Caribuenyo restaurant and the bar and dive centre. The waters especially in the bay are calm, and beautifully clear and turquoise. On the south side about 30 metres out from shore is a sunken barge which is surrounded by a wide variety of colourful fish, a lobster and other interesting marine life. This is used by the dive school as an easy introductory dive but can also be experienced by using a snorkel and mask that can be rented from the dive school (USD 12 a day I believe).

In the middle of the hotel by the lobby / reception is the swimming pool. It is OK, but quite ordinary and relatively small given the number of rooms in the hotel.

Restaurants and bars
The main restaurant is the Caribuenyo, which is where breakfast is served. The location is superb, with a true beach front location in a huge thatched hut and with seating on several levels with amazing views seaward and to the beaches. There is an amazing ambience at night.

The breakfast is a buffet and a la carte and was pretty good, with a large selection of fruit, omelette bar, fruit juice, hot foods and pastry . If we hadn't just come from the Ritz Carlton in Cancun, (where the breakfast is outstanding) we would have said it was very good. We also ate dinner here a couple of times and it was good by, and not overly expensive.

Two things I didn't like in the Caribuenyo restaurant bar were the flat screen TV and some of the cocktails. In a luxury hotel, even a relaxed one on a Caribbean island, let's not have a tacky sports bat flat screen TV showing sport. It struck me that this was more for the benefit of the waiters than the guests. Some of the cocktails were made with commercial mixers rather than freshly squeezed fruit.

There is an Italian restaurant called Alfredo which we narrowly missed dining at a couple of times. The issue was that when were staying at the hotel, there was no outside area with tables in this restaurant, despite the building being right in front of the sheltered beach in the bay, and the prospect of dining inside which the lure of the Caribuenyo experience was too much. The building that houses Alfredo has huge potential, and I hope the Interconti remodels it to include tables outside.

Conclusion
• The Presidente Intercontinental Cozumel is the oldest luxury hotel on Cozumel, and certainly one of the best, and maybe even the best. Extensively remodeled after damage from Wilma in 2005, in my mind further improvements could me made in relation to the swimming pool and to the building where the Alfredo restaurant is located, which has enormous potential for outside sea front dining. Overall we had a great time and would definitely stay there again if in Cozumel. In my opinion the hotel must be careful not to rest too much on its laurels, and could do with some further investment in the next few years to keep on top of the competition.

Room Tip: Check out the photo of the hotel plan in my photos. Far south and far north rooms are a long walk. F...
