“Lovely and Relaxing vacation”
Reviewed May 14, 2014

Staff was exceptional, especially Sergio and Freddie at the bar. Our maid went above and beyond. We left a note each morning for extra waters and she left us an additional case each day.

The rooms are so-so. Small but comfortable. Cold showers for the first few days were uncomfortable.

The grounds are beautiful.

Food is also so-so, nothing exceptional but good. Breakfast was the best meal of each day.

Here is the 411 on Allegro in Cozumel. I’ll cover the resort using the following categories: General Impression, Rooms, Food and Drinks, Activities, and for fun Wild Life. I’ll include both positives and negatives in each category. At the end of the day, no matter where you decide to stay, be positive and enjoy your vacation.

Our general impression of this resort is very much a mixed bag. We liked the bungalows; there are 8 rooms in each building. There is a decent looking kids water park and play area, but it seemed most of the kids were in the main pool with the swim up bar—go figure. The pools were nice, but poorly maintained. The first few days the water level was about 8 inches BELOW the skimmers, by the time we left some levels were to the skimmers while others remain below the skimmer level. Either way, they never ran the pumps connected to the skimmers so the pools tended to have debris. The grounds and beach were well maintained. The staff we interacted with were all great. Deferred maintenance was a significant and prevalent problem. It was visible in the pools and pool deck, as well as in the rooms and in our case, the broken stairs in our building. The vacation club people will hit you up as soon as you leave the lobby. It’s just a more clever name for a timeshare. It’s not our thing, so just decide if you want to give your vacation hours to hearing their offer. We said no, others said yes. Ok, lets get to the details on each category.

We liked our room. It was not luxurious, but adequate and clean. All rooms have a great outdoor balcony with chairs, a table, and most importantly and hammock. Put a couple bottles of your favorite wine in your suitcase and make good use of this space. It’s a great way to spend the time between sunset and dinner or wait out a rainstorm. The bed was hard, we joked about moving to the floor where it would be softer—yeah, its funnier in the middle of the night when you are both awake. There aren’t any drawers, so go prepared to arm wrestle over an odd number of shelves in the closet. The bath is just a standard tub/shower. Our AC was super cold, but friends we made there had issues with theirs being loud and some said they had to change rooms because their AC didn’t work.

Lets talk about drinks and then food. The drinks were among the best we have had at all inclusive resorts that didn’t serve top shelf. No really! Two choices of beer, actual fresh Lime Juice for the margaritas etc., the Blood Mary and Pina Coloda were both go to drinks as was the gin tonic and vodka tonic. Additionally, the glass size was perfectly fine, not that ridiculous tiny one. I appreciated that they did NOT use disposable cups—water recycles better than plastic. The food…I’ll be brief. Actually that will be easy since the lack of variety would keep me from any long discussion. Breakfast and lunch are the same every day and pretty much just the basics. Well actually the menu was technically different each day, but it tasted the same as yesterday. We could always find something to eat, but some variety would be nice or even expanding some selections in the fruit. We also expected great seafood, but that was rare. There are 2 a la carte choices; Asian and Mexican. Both were fine, but nothing spectacular. They both were closed more often than the schedule indicated. Oddly, from 4PM until dinner, there is nothing eat. Guess when people get hungry after playing all day…yep, 4PM. So if you are jonesing for some afternoon nachos, some fries, maybe even a banana…TOUGH.

The water sports hut allows use of kayaks, a Hobie Cat, and snorkeling gear. We didn’t dive, but the dive shop has the expected dive rentals and the divers all seemed pleased. Boats leave for excisions from the pier, so its easy access. There is no need to buy your excursions in advance of your trip; the front desk sells them for a fair price. We took the three-reef snorkeling trip and would recommend it as worthwhile. Land activities by the entertainment staff seemed few and far between, but this seemed to increase toward the end of our stay as well. The shows in the theater were not the best, and were cancelled twice during our trip. The Disco, is more like a kick back. The DJ was good, and if you had the right crowd, people would dance in spite of the bar that runs down the middle of the floor.

Wildlife: We enjoyed seeing a variety of fun critters! The iguanas are easy to find, but if you will go down the north road on the edge of the property, you will see Jesus Christ Lizards. They are fast, so be ready. We also saw land and sea turtles, toads, and crabs. The Jungle on the north side has some White-Nosed Coati; from the beach, keep your eyes on the treetops. You will think they are monkeys at first because of how playful they are and the fact that their tail is basically a hook. If you dive or snorkel, the wildlife list grows longer.

Wherever you decide to stay, go and have fun!

I have been to Cozumel 15+ times since 1998 and thought I would try an new place... bad call! The first thing I always do is to check the mattress for bed bugs and I'm sorry I did this. I looked at three rooms and each mattress was so stained, it was impossible to tell if there were bed bugs. I was completely disgusted which made sleeping challenging. I also prefer a very firm bed but this was crazy - it was a brick. Additionally, the a/c in our first room was not working well and in the second we could not turn it lower (so we froze). The pools did not appear to be very clean and the food had little variation in the entire week we stayed.

On the plus side, the staff is very kind and the beach is great.

We visited the Allegro in Cozumel over Easter 2014 the hotel has a beautiful setting and layout. The rooms are somewhat dated but clean. There is only 1 choice of restaurant for each meal and you only get 1 additional reservation at the Mexican or Asian restaurant for a 7 day stay. We don't travel for the food so this didn't bother us. There is no beverage waiters so we were always standing in line at the 1 bar by the beach. The other bars didn't open until the evening. We were referred, by the hotel to a jeep rental company, Rentadora Espana (right across the street next to Almo). Long story short the jeep broke down on us we had to flag down a taxi to get back to the hotel and then we were told that we would owe the 10% of the deductible ($200) because the clutch went out (I am pretty sure a clutch doesn’t cost $2000 to repair regardless of where you live). The rental guy named Tony said that we would not be allowed to leave the island if we didn't pay (told us the police would be waiting at the airport to arrest us). We ended up calling the police which helped us straighten it out, the hotel and the service desk that referred us to the rental car company basically said it was not their problem and were of very little help. We would not return to any Occidental Resorts only because their customer service, when help was needed, was not there. BEWARE OF THIS SCAM, if you rent a car in Cozumel, you don't know and can't know what the condition is of the clutch or engine is prior to renting but they will try to hold you responsible for the cost of their repairs.

I spent the week of 4/26/14 to 5/3/14 at the Allegro. Since it was the beginning of the shoulder season it was not crowded. My purpose in visiting Cozumel was primarily for a dive vacation. The Allegro was the low key style of resort that I was looking for.

The Allegro's staff is GREAT! They are responsive, warm and caring. As always, if you show people respect, they will generally return the same attitude.

I chose the all inclusive plan. I found the food and beverages to be more than adequate. The choices were varied and the freshness/taste were good. This is not a gourmet experience and is not intended to be. It would be nice if there were additional red wine choices.

The facilities are good. The resort appears to be in a constant state of updating the infrastructure as funds permit. I was in a premium Ultimate Dive Experience room. The room was located close to the ocean and one of the pools. Warm shower water for post dive clean up! Good AC and soft pillows for sleep.

The on site dive operator (Pro Dive) does a great job.I logged 19 dives during the week including a night dive. The Allegro's proximity to the best reefs in Cozumel make the boat rides very short.

Room Tip: If you are a diver, try the Ultimate Dive Package for an upgraded room.

We stayed at the Allegro for two nights only! It was horrible. The room had a thatched roof which allowed us to hear everything the other people in the unit did or said. The first night a couple of then came in drunk, turned the tv on full blast and we presume passed out. No sleep that night. The resort had nightly entertainment that was incredibly loud. We heard everything in our room. Things were vibrating on the table for the noise. The food was horrible. The pools were small. The bathroom area nearest the beach and pools smelled like septic. It was overwhelming. Saving grace was the beach and the beachside bartenders. We would never return to this resort, nor would we recommend it.

When we first arrived, my friend and myself. We were super excited because we were on vacation! But when it came down to experience our 5 day ("all inclusive") Caribbean experience, it wasn't something that we could brag about. We didn't receive the room we were told over the phone that we were getting, the food was TERRIBLE! The beds were Rock hard, i had bruises on my hips from sleeping on my side. The drinks that were served smelt horrid because of the water and ice. Some of the staff were nice, cant say all.. When the time came to picking up the vehicle that i rented they were never on time. They told me 9am, I was there 8:55am. Then some other person then told me after waiting 40 minutes after 9am that I will have to get the vehicle the following day. I had to accommodate myself to them, but when i asked for some type of compensation they wouldn't do anything for me. WIFI you will have to pay for $61 for 5 days and you were only able to use the WiFi in the lobby and one other spot. My friend Got sick, we both had travelers insurance, but we would have to file a claim when we were to go back home. So travelers insurance is nothing...

I will NEVER ever stay at this resort again!

Cozumel is definitely a beautiful place to visit and there is a lot to do! I will visit again but not at ALLEGRO!!

Room Tip: Don't stay at allegro if you want a good place to sleep and eat, for being an ALL INCLUSIVE!!
