“It was just OK....nothing special.”

The plan was a relaxing day at the beach in Cozumel Mexico so we booked an excursion to Playa Mia. We had to pay our own transportation to and from Playa Mia, upon arrival we had to walk through a flea market with very pushy sales people almost pulling you into there shops. When we made our way through to the beach we were really surprised to find very few people there. Drinks were included in our package so we approached the bar only to find out we had to go to a special bar with our package. We had 5 children with us and they tried to go into the water but just sank into the loose sand making it almost impossible for them to move. Two of our older kids 9 & 10 wanted to try the water trampolines but found they were to far out for them to get to. So all the kids ended up in the pool they had there (they could swim in a pool on the ship). So the adults needed to keep an eye on them keeping us from sitting and relaxing on the beach. I just have never experienced a beach like this that was so hard to walk in, I really can't explain it and don't know what they could do about it but it was not safe for kids. They did organize one game while we there that the kids participated in and enjoyed but in three hours they only did it once. The changing room was clean and they did provide us with a plastic bag for our wet suits. It was OK but nothing exceptional.

“Buyer Beware!”
Reviewed October 22, 2012

We booked the Mexican Cuisine workshop and tasting tour which clearly states round trip a/c bus is included in the price. We (12 of us) were told if there were 4 or more of us that wanted to go back early we could take the van back, less than 4 we would be on our own. All 5 of us heard them say that loud and clear. We asked the van driver if this was the van to take us back to the port and he said yes. After we arrived at the port the driver said we owed him $20, the other 3 passengers had walked ahead and were gone, not only did we not owe him we only had a few dollars left with us. We told him we needed to go back to the ship and straighten this out with the excursion people or failing that get his $20 ransom. He called port security, there must have been 6 or 7 of them who came and shoved and pushed us around quite a bit (we both have the bruises to prove it) now the fare had grown to $20 each. One of the crewmembers saw what was going on and tried to reason with us, the chief of security was yelling and screaming at her too and actually body slammed her a couple of times telling she should mind her own business, it was his island and none of us was getting back on the boat. Finally after almost an hour asking fellow passengers to tell someone from the ship of this someone from ship security came and rescued us. We have since learned this is very common in Cozumel. Playa Mia reply to the cruise line was they didn't say they would provide the early ride back to the port, I guess the 5 of us have hearing problems. As a 72 year old man I don't need this nor do I have to see my wife shoved around like that.

“Do the Cooking Class!!!!”
Reviewed October 8, 2012

We had a shore day in Cozumel on our cruise and decided to do the Mexican cooking & Cruise at Playa Mia which also included 1 1/2 hours of beach time. All I can say is YOU MUST DO THIS!!!! We had a fabulous times with Carlos & Moises cooking up a storm and the unlimited free bar while you are cooking did not go astray. We only had one other couple doing the class (shout out to Gail and Andrew) and the intimate atmosphere certainly added to the day. We cooked amazing food and they even catered for my non-seafood tastes :-). Thanks guys I can not say enough good things. Just do it!

“Great cruise day trip, sub-par food”
Reviewed September 22, 2012

We traveled here on the Carnival Magic in March 2012 and went to the Playa Mia Grand Beach Park as a day excursion. We live in Texas an obviously hear about the unrest in Mexico and were slightly concerned before leaving, but we felt safe and secure the entire time. We were picked up by a bus along with the other people from our cruise who did this excursion. All of the staff spoke perfect English and were very friendly and helpful. The beach was very nice...not one of the prettiest beaches that I've ever been to, but I thought it was great for a Cozumel beach. The unlimited margaritas were mixed very well and the staff was very good about keeping the drinks flowing! The staff also played games with the people there and handed out t-shirts to the winners and was very good about pumping up the crowd and keeping the party atmosphere alive. The only thing I was not impressed by was the food. I live in Texas and eat a lot of Tex-Mex/Mexican food, and this food was awful. It was kept in a buffet style line, did not seem fresh and was very greasy. Lucky for us, our cruise ship had an abundance of food we were able to enjoy upon our return. Overall, we had a great time. I would recommend this excursion to couples, families with older children (drinking age or close), and friends.
