Hotel & Bungalows Mayaland
Ranked #1 of 5 Hotels in Chichen Itza
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 3, 2014

We stayed two nights at the Hotel and Bungalows Mayaland, It is right next to the Chichen Itza complex - there is a view of the old observatory from the hotel foyer. The building is grand, old, and beautiful with a lot of history. The room was spacious and comfortable. The staff were friendly and conducted themselves in a very dignified manner. The food was OK - we are vegetarians and the choices were rather limited. Breakfasts were good (loved adding habanero sauce to scrambled eggs!). The Wi-Fi connection is good in the lobby area but cannot be used from other floors.

The only reason that I thought twice before giving it a 5/5 is that there were several maintenance issues all of which could be easily fixed with a little more attention to detail. For example, the cistern in the toilet flush did not work properly - I had to keep removing the top of the tank and making sure the chain did not obstruct the flushing mechanism (it had too many links in it). Addition of a few hooks to hang clothes/towels in the bathroom might be a good idea. There was a gap at the top of the door leading to the balcony through which mosquitoes could fly in.

These issues were minor (I'm only mentioning them so the management takes notice). We really enjoyed our stay here - spending time in the ruins, watching the film in the planetarium and reading about the amazing prowess of the Maya in mathematics and astronomy on the internet to understand it all a little better. I only wish we had stayed longer and had time to vist Ek Balam as well. Amazing location, wonderful hotel.

Thank you for your wonderful review !
I have taken note of all your comments and suggestions. We are, gradually, completely remodeling ALL rooms in the main building as of next Monday, two at a time, closing all adjacent rooms so as to make unnoticeable the work being performed. We hope to have the honor to be your hosts again in the near future. Until then, safe and happy travels, and once again, Muchas Gracias!

This hotel is maybe the most difficult hotels I have ever reviewed! Why? Because in some cases it is excellent - and in other cases needing irmprovement......So it comes down to what you want. Let me explain:

First of all this hotel has one enormous advantage and that is the exceptional location, just outside the formal wall to the temple area of Chichen Itza, including a special entrance and the possibility to access the temple area as you wishes, a day ticket will get you into the area as many times in a day as you wishes. So, the proximity to the temple area is an enormous advantage. There are three different pools in the huge, spectacular hotel garden. One just around the corner from the restaurant and two more in the garden. One of these is fantastic, peaceful and a sheer joy to spend time at, the other one felt more neglected.

The hotel has loads and loads of "colonial" charm, incl photos of famouse guests. But some bits needed a bit of renovation to be fresh. For instance the area were the lunch buffet was served could definitively to with a bit of renovation and the food in the restaurant wasn't up to par. After a few performances of the Mayan dancers I had had it. To the degree that we avoided the restaurant on our second day.....

The rooms are large and very clean and the beds are comfortable. We had a room in the main building with large balconies and comfy chairs. An ok selection of TV-channels that you need as there is little else to do once it gets dark.

However, the hotel feels as if it could do with some modernizing. It is difficult to explain, but after the temple had closed (5 PM) and you had watched the mayan astronomy show (30 min), there was little to do (TV?). For some reason there isn't a sound and light show at the Chichen Itza anymore.

We had "chateaubriand" in the restaurant, unfortunately this wasn't worth the money even if the meat was fine. The restaurant is nice, colonial and the service is good. We had a continental breakfast in the garden in the morning and bread, fruit, orange juice and tea was delicious in the wonderful surroundings.

Please note that if you want to buy tickets to the park you can do this at the front desk of the hotel or at the entrance in the garden. PESOS is the currency that works. Credit cards not accepted!!!
Service and staff is very nice and everything arranged after your wishes. However, I just wish there had been something more to do, somehow I had envisioned a small village close by.

Room Tip: If you are prepared to pay extra, I believe that the cottages in the garden have more charm than the...

We spent Dec 24 and 25 at hotel Mayaland.

We had two bungalows on the gorgeous grounds. Rooms were clean. Bathrooms good, but hot water pressure low. Bungalows were palapa thatch roof; we knew this so bed netting not unexpected. Loved wooden doors with carvings. More than enough space. Room correlated with website description accurately

If you want a complete enclosed room with Max AC don't stay in bungalow.

Proximity to Chiche Itza wonderful. You get up, eat breakfast, and you wander to the ruins. You can get the whole place to yourself. We stood in the ball court for15 minutes all by ourselves. Saw everything twice before the first tourist bus arrived.

After wandering through the ruins, sat by pool and relaxed without worrying about crowds. Went over to Ek Balam later in day after resting.

Like spending time in a civilized form of jungle. Still get the background noises of birds and critters , but the groomed grounds
and isolated bungalows are 5 minutes from the pool and bar.

Food another issue. Paid full price for breakfast buffet before realizing that the sausage was fried hot dog and the "ham" was bologna. They could do a lot better here. Dinner overpriced, not local in character, although service and attention good. Although lodging and hotel 5/5, restaurant only 3/5 on a good day. They should fire the cooks and whomever designed menu.

You ll never find a prettier setting. Fantastic base for Valladolid , Chichen Itza, Ek Balam.

Classic example of location, location, location.

Looking forward to next stay, but I ll try not to eat there unless imperative

My husband and I spent one night. We loved the location and being able to visit the ruins before the crowds. We did not need the jacuzzi - in fact the water pressure was too low to fill the tub. There is something magical about the hotel and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to visit the area. The cenote in the area was one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to.

Prepare to step back in time, but still enjoy the luxuries of today. We recently spent two night at the charming Mayaland Hotel in Chichen Itza. Our room had a fantastic view of the old observatory ruins, which lies only a short walk from the hotel. Our bus arrived just about lunch time so we made our way to the restaurant so they could have more time toready our room. Check-in was easy and the staff were so friendly and helpful. The food was delicious and well presented. Our breakfast was outstanding and the rolls in a basket were nice and warm. Service in the dining room was on par with a four diamond hotel.
The grounds surrounding the hotel are beautifully kept and the foliage was tropically overwellming. We spent an afternoon by the prisine pool sipping Pina Colatas and listening to the birds. After a nice siesta our evening started with a cool cocktail out on the bar patio. This is a great place to people watch and even meet other travelers.
Ah yes...the tourist abound as the hotel does special lunches for the large tour groups. However, their dining areas are separate from the main dining room and they are all gone by mid afternoon. Once again the hotel truns back into the quiet elegant old hacienda that feels like you are visiting a wealthy plantation owner.
Read about our exploration of the ruins of Chichen Itza.
We'll beback !!

We stayed 2 nights to be close to the park, right at the second entrance and without the crowds, see my review of chitchen itza. The hotel, built in the 20s, has been well maintained, is spacious, and has a superb staff. We had room 101, view of the observatory which was worth more then the cost of the room. Ask for 101, 201, 301 and,I believe, 22 which will be larger and is right over the main entrance. The rooms are large, chairs could be a little more comfortable, but beds fine. Batheroom was large, tub shower, single sink, all yucatan marble, lighting could be a little better, but it was fine. We never used the AC, the fresh air is so wonderful with the sounds of the jungle. The grounds are amazing, lush, walking paths and electric carts if you need one. Several pools available. You will be awakened by the sounds of hundreds of birds, so do not plan on sleeping in, the birds go to sleep as the sun sets!
Ok, the restaurant, eat all your meals in the dining room or on the lovely terrace. The food is excellent, service excellent and the room is an experience. The buffet is for the tour buses, thank goodness it is on the otherside of the complex! To address another review, yes, the crowds from the buses are large and noisy, they start to arrive around 11 and are gone by 4, so come back from exploring, have a pina collada and take a nap before dinner. We will stay there again which has to be the best complement.

Room Tip: Rooms 101,201,301 and 22

Like travel was in the past. The accommodations are 50's 60's and truly enjoyable. Besides the the sites of Chichén Itzá this Hotel has it's own history and allot of it. The charm of it's isolation in the jungle and the extra attentive staff make this place a must destination. We will be back , it was one of the highlight of our Yucatan Adventure.
