“Superb stay!”
Reviewed November 12, 2013

We stayed here our second night making a trip around the Yucatan state. Our first night we stayed at the Mayaland Lodge in Uxmal and we had a great experience (you can see my review too).

We arrived here in the late afternoon by car. They have a private and secure place to leave the cars. There is a first welcoming reception and after telling them about our arrival, one golf cart came to pick up us and the luggages and brang us to the main building for the check in.

I emailed them when we made our booking telling them about the reason of our visit and they remembered when I did mention we were in honeymoon. So they had the nice touch to upgrade us to a superior room. It was perfect with a beautiful terrace overlooking the garden, a big room and a nice bathroom as well.

That day we decided to relax at the hotel and we enjoyed one of the several pools they have there. They provide towels for the pools which is great.

After that, we returned to our room for having a shower and changing our clothes as we had booked tickets for the planetarium they have there. I highly recommend to go, it worths every peso! After that we went to dinner to one of the restaurants and we enjoyed every meal. I highly suggest you to have dinner outside (no mosquitos at all) with the only light of the candles. A very romantic atmosphere!

The day after we had the breakfast at the hotel too and I highly suggest it. You can order à la carte and there are several choices. Our breakfast were excellent and the waiters are great.
While having breakfast we enjoyed the visit of a beautiful peacock.

After our breakfast we went to the Mayan ruins visiting the place with an excellent private guide. There is a direct entrance from the hotel which is great. Being there gives you the opportunity to get up early to visit Chichén Itzá almost empty.

I highly recommend to stay at Mayaland resorts. We had a great experience at the Lodge of Uxmal and the Hotel & Bungalows Mayaland. If we return there, we would definetely stay here again. But not for only one night but for more!

Pros:

- Access to Chichén Itzá ruins before the crowds at 8 am.

- Very pleasant, attentive staff.

- Good value room only deal. We paid USD 77 in early November.

Cons:

(NB We stayed here solely for the first and third 'pros' given above so the comments below might not resonate with many of the hotel's typical clientele).

- No complimentary drinking water in rooms or elsewhere on site. This was surprising and disappointing, not least as it appears to be commonplace in Mexico, including in budget and mid-range hotels. As the hotel is far from shops (4km or so), the option of paying 30 pesos for 500 ml of drinking water in the room in order to use the complimentary coffee almost(!) seemed reasonable.

- Wifi is only available in a limited part of the communal areas, not in rooms, which seems bizarre in the 21st century.

- Despite the good value room price, costs soon stacked up when dinner and breakfast on site and taxis were factored in.

After staying for a week at another hotel my wife and I took an excursion to Chichen Itza - lunch was included at Mayaland Hotel.

Lunch itself wasn't bad - a reasonable selection including barbecue plus live dancers whilst you eat.

But the following morning both my wife and I have had a bad stomach and not been feeling too good. This is the only change in our diet after no issues at our hotel.
48 hours on and I'm still feeling it.

Fantastic location next to Chichen Itza but dissapointing to have been left feeling ill.

We are deeply sorry and very concerned with you and your wife not having felt well after eating with us. We want to make good with your experience while with us. Please let us know how best to do so. As you can appreciate from over 500 comments, I believe only a couple had a similar experience. We strive to provide the very best in sanitary conditions, fresh, carefully handled food preparation in all our restaurants. Just a the Mayaland we serve over half a million meals a year with good to great coments on our patron's culinary experiences. I want to make good. Kindly write us through Trip Advisor. Thank You!

We stayed in the main part of the hotel for one night.

Pros:
- Attractive, comfortable hotel in an absolutely perfect location for visiting Chichen Itza - literally a 2 minute walk through the hotel grounds to find a serene little ticket office and a gate right into the ruins. And at 8am, there were hardly any other tourists, and the people selling souvenirs were only just setting up. Delightful. (we later walked to the main entrance to take an ADO bus, and that entrance was chaotic and stressful in comparison).
- Efficient check in process
- Comfortable bed, and attractive, clean room (though from the reviews, the bungalows sound nicer)
- Jacuzzi bath in the room
- They organized a pleasant little horse riding tour through the local 'jungle' for us with no hassle.
- We had read about the restaurant food being inedible and so on arrival wandered around Piste looking for somewhere to eat dinner, but failed. We ended up at the hotel restaurant and found the food was (a) quite pleasant, and (b) not extortionately priced - and the ambience was lovely. We also had breakfast and lunch there and were quite happy.
- Nice swimming pool, and it's a treat to be able to jump in the pool after a hot morning at the ruins.

Cons:
- I had specifically booked a king sized bed, but as my wife was checking in and they were handing her the key, they spotted me (also female) and changed it for another room which turned out have twin beds. I didn't bother complaining as they had already taken up our luggage etc, and it was only one night, I was tired, and it's stressful to make a fuss sometimes, but I was disappointed in their assumption/action.
- The man who brought our suitcases to the room opened the doors to our balcony, and though we closed it rapidly when he left, we spent the rest of the night being repeatedly bitten by mosquitos.
- They don't provide free drinking water in the rooms.
- Wifi is available in certain parts of the public lobby only, not in the rooms.
- We accidentally left our washbag in our en suite bathroom when we checked out. We then left our bags in the baggage storage area for several hours, clearly marked with our room number. The room was certainly cleaned in the interim. I was really frustrated that nobody took the initiative to reunite us with our things, and just gave us our bags and waved us off. When we realized we had no toiletries, I emailed Mayaland who said they had found it, and had transferred it to Cancun, so we could pick it up from their representatives at the airport. I sent them all my flight details but when I got to the airport early, and found several Mayaland representatives, they couldn't find it. They then took my address and promised a representative would be in touch asap to arrange to send it to me. I subsequently emailed my original contact to check this. There has been no response. Disappointing, unhelpful, dismissive service that put a dampner on the experience for us.

We stayed here for three nights during our visit to Chichen Itza. Our suite was gorgeous. Hardwood carved doors with Mayan symbols and stained glass windows throughout our room. Am recovering from knee surgery and could not take the stairs. So the next morning the staff moved us to a bungalow at no additional charge for the rest of our stay. Having their own entrance to Chichen Itza and getting in before the crowds was wonderful. We were able to take photos with nobody around at all. The Hotel offers a light show that describes Mayan history and beliefs which was very enlightening. The staff went out of their way to explain everything Mayan. They even taught us a few words in Mayan. The grounds are extensive and well maintained. A peacock would come on our porch to get out of the rain and just sit with us like an old friend. A very enjoyable stay and would recommend to anyone interested in the Mayan culture. =^••^=

This is a very big complex aimed at the mass tourist market. Coaches come in for the day, so even if there are not many people staying there it is still bustling. However, our room was comfortable and clean and the staff are very friendly, the ground are pretty, and most importantly it has its own entrance to Chichen itza. We bought our tickets when the ticket office opened at 8am, and were amazed to find that we were the only tourists in the ruins for over half an hour! The coaches arrive after 9am, so the early bird definitely catches the worm.
We didn't eat in any of the hotel restaurants, they seemed very touristy and not what we were looking for, but the town of Piste is only a 5 minute drive and there are restaurants there where you may not find yourself surrounded by solely Americans and Russians.
We would recommend this hotel on the basis of its location every time.

My family stayed at Mayaland for one night. It was beautiful, comfortable, with lots of conveniences and dining options and an excellent ruins site walking distance away (Chichen Itza - obviously what you need to do if spending the night in this area!)
The staff was almost over-friendly and seemed to want to be tipped, but that's ok, because they went out of their way to give us a hand with show tickets to the planetarium, tour info, and even called us a tour guide to Chichen Itza.
The buffet restaraunt had good options, but not a whole lot of authentic food. There was jello in the desert bar!! I'm sorry, but that screams "American tourists, eat here" to me. If you want authenticity, go into the city or to the nearby Yokdzonot cenote and eat there (See my other post about that place - phenomenal!). If you are coming from a cruise ship or don't have much time to explore lunch options, it was good overall, complete with live dancing, but very much like a place Americans would pig out in, not something typical out of Mexico. The drinks were good everywhere at the hotel - the bar and the restaurants. There is a beautiful garden, pool, and even a fun chocolate museum/shop that you should check out! (But, note that some items are locally made and others are imported at the chocolate shop, so read the labels if you are picky about those things.) Bottom line - if you want American luxury, Mayaland is a nice place to eat and sleep! Personally, next time, I'll take a bungalow room!! Oh, and watch out for the beautiful peacocks all over the place!

We wanted to see the Chichen Itza light show but it was cancelled so we saw the Mayan Skies planetarium instead. I think it was not spectacular like the light show would have been, but it was a fun little evening activity.
