“A real gem in the heart of the jungle, and one step away from the ruins”
Reviewed August 31, 2012

The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Our rooms were beautiful and had everything necessary. The restaurant was on the pricey side, but offered Mexican cuisine with a gourmet twist. The location of the hotel- right next to the ruins- was just perfect. Highly recommended!

I can't say enough good things about our visit to Mayaland. All the personnel there were very friendly and helpful We stayed for 3 nights, and the wait staff would spend time talking to us about everything from local culture to family experience. Every detail of the hotel was beautifully done-- from the carved furniture in the rooms to the stain glass windows. The grounds were immaculately kept, and it was a treat to lounge in the hotel's foyer seeing the sun on the ruins. Additionally, we enjoyed the pool, and the balcony (although I suspect the standing water in the flower arrangement might be adding to the local mosquito population). The food at the restaurant was consistently excellent. We used the hotel as a base to go to other parts of the region. I think we were very sad to leave and would definitely visit again.

I just was there for a two night stayed. I was travelling with my daughter and a 6 and 4 years old grandkids. We felt extremely safe and loved the setting. My grandkids loved to sleep under the mosquito tent. This hotel is ideally located since we could walk to the Maya ruins. I highly recommend it for any age. The kids enjoyed the wild vegetation and we were impressed by the service of all the employees.

Room Tip: We did not have a view to the Maya ruins but were in front of the pool.

We stayed at the Mayaland for one night while visiting Chichen Itza. This is an old hotel but it has a very special flair. The grounds are wonderful, from the Lobby you can look at the Observatory of Chichen Itza. The room was big, the bathroom looked quite worn down. We had a really big balcony. Originally we have booked a room looking at the Observatory through hotels.com, but arriving at the hotel we were told that there is only one room looking at the ruins. Anyway it did not really matter as our view of the gardens was also very nice. The hotel has a pool and a free car park. Our room had a TV, WIFI is in the lobby. We had dinner and breakfast at the hotel as there is no other place you can eat nearby. The food was good but more international than Mexican. The very best thing about the hotel is the location - it is right at the back entrance of Chichen Itza (you can also buy the tickets there) and in the morning you can really be the first visitors to the ruins before the tour buses arrive. The entrance is also opened in the evening for the night show. We would definatley stay at this hotel again.

We spent just one night in Mayaland. Came in in the afternoon, a bit later than we origonally planned for, and here the hotel's location saved us, it takes you maybe 5 minutes to walk from your room to the site - fantastic! And even more so important since the site is closed at 5 pm... Unfortunately the light and sound show was canceled a couple of days before we came there, and since we really wanted to see that we began our stay somewhat disappointed. But then the experience in the hotel made up for it. It is a place that transforms you back in time, which in conjunction with magic surroundings, open hacienda-like design, good service, great restaurant, beautiful and somewhat "wild" gardens is something nor that many places in the world can do. Rooms are spacious, we had a spectacular view at the Observatory, part of the windows are not really windows i.e. There's no panes, but a bug net and storm shutters, which makes you feel even more surrounded by nature and its sounds, at the same time being perfectly safe and insect free. Can't remeber the last time we slept that well, and this with a tropical hurricane Ernesto passing close by. The room and the bathroom were like straight from the 20's, which provided for extra charm and reminded us of our stays in safari camps in Kenya. Just don't expect a jacuzzi :) Same historic and authentic ambiance goes for a beautiful lobby and bar. The restaurant for a dinner was perhaps a bit pricey, but food and service were excellent. Small downside with breakfast, it begins at 7 am, and since we had to leave earlier than that to drive on to Coba there was no option for us to grab a snack.
All in all, if you seek 21st century hyper-modern type of accomodation, this will not probably work out for you that well. On the contrary, if you go to Chichen Itza to see and sense some history (and whybelse would you go there?) this is a perfect spot, that adds so much to the whole experience.

Having visited Chichen Itza before, I was seeking a hotel close to the ruins to enable an early morning entry prior to the arrival of buses...the Mayaland was perfect for this. Finding the hotel requires vigilance, but once you arrive your jaw should drop at the sheer beauty of the grounds. The hotel was originally a Spanish hacienda, converted to a hotel in the 1930's. Although offered a ride, we chose to walk to the main lobby to fully enjoy the property. Check in was a breeze, having booked 4 months earlier via the internet. We stayed in Chichen #1 & #2 right beside the hotel, and found it to be semi-rustic, clean, and very unique (mosquito nets around bed - but not needed). The bungalow has a Mayan vibe coupled with modern amenities...including a carved bathroom door of a Mayan glyph! We enjoyed a fabulous breakfast served with a Spanish lesson correcting some of our pronunciation mistakes by very attentive staff. The pools are welcome relief from the jungle humidity. We took in the late night light show at C-Itza and I returned the following morning to photograph the site without a single tourist in sight for about an hour...mission accomplished! We also enjoyed an exceptional dinner perfectly prepared that evening. For a unique hotel experience coupled with historic beauty the Mayaland fits the bill!

Room Tip: Chichen #1 & #2 are close to pool and main hotel but remain very private.
