If you go to Mexico, Chichen Itza is a must visit. When we arrived on our holiday we saw many decorative skulls which we didn't understand what they were or what they represent. On the trip we discovered why the skulls were important and the history of the Mayan people.
It is very hot with not much shade so take an umbrella to use - it helps.
There are locals who make souvenirs for you to purchase too so take money.
A truly beautiful trip and highly recommend.
Chichen Itza, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is Mexico’s most famous and most popular tourist attraction. We were fortunate to be staying in a hotel within walking distance and had the privilege of accessing the archaeological site a 6am to witness the sunrise over the main pyramid! The site is truly beautiful and extremely interesting, but having visited numerous other Mayan archaeological sites I don’t think that Chichen Itza is the actually the most impressive of the ones we have visited. That said, if you do have the opportunity to visit Chichen Itza, don’t miss it!
Chichen Itza is absolutely remarkable. This ancient site built by the Mayans is filled with history and awe. It's definitely a must if you're visiting the area.
We booked a guided tour through Cancun Adventures. A van picked us in the morning (6:45am) at our resort in Quintana Roo. It was about a 2 hour drive to Chichen Itza, and they provide you with snacks and water and lunch on your way back. Our tour guide, Gilberto, was amazing! He was super informative and explained everything in such detail as he walked us through Chichen Itza. He also had great visuals on an iPad to create a better picture of Mayan culture. He truly made the difference. He was so passionate and genuine, it was intriguing to listen to him. They also gave us an hour and a half of free time to roam around and take pictures. There are various buildings/structures including temples, a ball court, an open cenote and so much more.
Tips:
- Arrive early to avoid large crowds, we went during "off-season" and by 10am it was already starting to get crowded with more tours coming in as we left.
- Wear walking shoes
- Be sure to be prepared for humidity. Dress accordingly - shorts and a tank top
- Bring water
- Bring an umbrella, hat and/or sunglasses
- Bring sunscreen and bug spray
- There are a ton of vendors trying to sell product (bring cash if you want to buy some souvenirs), but I also thought they were a bit invasive and disrupting the ability to really absorb the wonder of the site
Nice tour a little long though. Pretty colorful. It’s important to make sure the guide is good for a long tour. He might spend the whole time giving poor tips and never shutting up. Too many tricks to try to sell stuff. With Sightseeing Cancun Abelino was the guide
Chichen Itza was an amazing place to visit. I would suggest you take a guided tour to learn about the Mayans and the Chichen Itza construction, its audio engineering is amazing, not to mention how the whole plaza was constructed (floor included) 1000's of years ago.
