It is easy to see why it is being considered one of the new seventh wonders of the world. A three hour ride from the resort was in a very comfortable bus with food, drinks, and a restroom. The site itself was quite amazing. Excellent guide to describe the use and history of the structures. Lots of junk sold at tables on site, the guide told us not to waste our money on them.

We booked a private tour for our family of four in September 2012 with Entertainment Plus Cancun. We had a brand new 12 seater air-conditioned van to ourselves for the day. Our fabulous driver Milton, was flexible in our planning of the day and he shared lots of great advice about what else to see and do whilst we were there. At Chichen Itza we used a tour guide that Milton recommended and he was very knowledgeable. I highly recommend that you get a guide as the inscriptions and the true history of this site cannot be fully appreciated otherwise. We swam at Centoe Ik Kil (not to be missed and with the heat you'll be desperate to cool down), then had lunch in a lovely restaurant as part of the tour. We then went to Ek Balam ruins which still allow you to climb up/into them. The view from the 102 step of one of the pyramid was incredible. We would highly recommend this company, they were professional from our very first on line enquiry all the way through. Worth every cent doing it privately and not having to wait in line with a huge bunch of others on a large tour bus. We also booked our hotel/airport transfers through USA Transfers which is part of this organisation. They were on time and reliable. Very professional outfit.

We booked a day tour through Sunwing at our resort in Riviera Maya, about a 3 hour bus ride from Chichen Itza - this is where the patience is required. Our tour operators were with a company called Cancun Passion, they were great.

The bus they sent us out on was a deluxe touring bus, with tables and cup holders, bathrooms and room overhead for bags. The seats are comfortable and they fed us a light continental breakfast with juice and coffee since we left around 8 am.

Once on site we went straight into see the ruins. Our group split into an English tour a Spanish tour that lasted about 2 1/2 hours. Our guide was funny and knowledgable and really went out of his way to answer everyone's questions and make sure people were enjoying themselves. We were given bottles of water and umbrellas for shade when we got off the bus and we were brought fresh cold water mid tour. Temperatures were around 90 degrees but there was a nice breeze.

The ruins are breathtaking and the history of the people who built them is really interesting and impressive.

One downer is the number of vendors that are around and constantly trying to make a sale (not pushy but numerous) and honestly, the only thing that will make them leave is if tourists stop buying their wares (which are very cheap and in some cases not great quality, in other cases, gorgeous - pottery). That's a decision you'll have to make :)

We had lunch at a great restaurant in the small town outside of the site before heading to an underground "cenote" (cave) for a quick swim.

If you can handle the bus ride, it was a really nice day and my husband and I were happy to have had the experience.

We decided to spend one day of our vacation on a day trip to Chichen Itza. It was well worth it. We booked the trip through Best Day Travel right in the hotel. Picked us up at 7:00 a.m. and about a three hour drive to the area. Our tour guide, Abel, was quite informative and interesting. The vendors inside the ruins are annoying (as are the jaguar whistles ginger 18!) but the site is so beautiful and the history so interesting that it is a must see. After touring the area, the bus took us to a wonderful buffet lunch and then on to the huge swimming hole for a quick dip. They promised to have us back by 7:00 p.m. and that's just what they did, even with a full bus.

I would recommend taking an umbrella for shade as it gets quite hot. And take a hat, too. You're going to get some fantastic photos.

The drive is long, big toll fees. We were very surprised to see all the vendors inside the park. They line every walk way! You can't even take pictures of the ruins with out getting harassed, and if I ever hear one of those annoying Jaguar whistles again..... It is a 7 wonder of the world, we had to see them. The ruins are amazing!!! Very hot!
