The first time I visited the pyramid in 1999 the back side was still overgrown with jungle and you could climb to the top (climbing down was harder due to shallow and uneven step heights). You could also enter the hidden door to climb the inside steps to the jaguar! Now the pyramid is roped off but it is still an amazing sight to appreciate the workmanship and artistry of the temple.

The main building at the Chichen Itza park. Beautiful architecture. Clap hard and listen what Kukulcan will respond!

Very cool structure with surrounding venues and great stories. Going during the equinox is awesome so you can see the shadow of the snake going down the pyramid. It's hot and open with little shade so take sunscreen and a hat! Definitely worth seeing.

Amazing experience. Ask the local guides to demonstrate the sounds and the Maya Calendar. See the snake, when the sun is in the right place.

It's amazing and completely deserves its status as one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. Don't miss it if you get the opportunity to visit. It's best to go on a tour with a guide. We went with Tui from Playa del Carmen with an excellent guide called Eric, and got far more out of it than we would have done if just going round on our own. Our tour arrived just after the site had opened - definitely recommend this so you can get great photos without the crowds.

Chichen Itza covers a big area and there is more to see on the site, including the huge ball court, platform of the skulls and temple of warriors.
