“An OK home base for Chichen Itza”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 19, 2013

My girlfriend and I spent a night here last week on our trip to Chichen Itza. We took the Ado bus which let us off at the front entrance of Chichen Itza and it was a 70 peso cab ride to the hotel. We were there during rainy season and everything smelled musty. Many of the paintings around the hotel were soggy and there was water everywhere, which is to be expected in Mexico at this time. The room smelled weird but the AC worked with no problem. We found a small lizard in the room but no bugs. The beds were small and uncomfortable. The menu was overpriced and the waiter was angry because we brought our own water to the table. The breakfast was free and nothing to complain about. The best part of the trip was the service we received from the morning lobby host. Our bus wasn't leaving for a few hours after check-in so he allowed us to wait in the pool table room and even turned on the AC for us. For the price it's definitely worth it to stay here and beat the tourist crowds at Chichen Itza in the morning. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a cheap place to stay while visiting Chichen Itza but be sure to bring your own snacks and water.

Room Tip: Be sure to bring your own water and snacks as everything is very overpriced at the hotel and at Chic...

The room was adorable and we enjoyed it very, very much. The pool is beautiful, and this is the only choice for someone staying at Chichen to walk 5 minutes down the road for early morning exploration as all of the other hotels look like run down La Quinta Inns in US.

Villas Arqueologicas are a great value, but other than the older gentleman who welcomed us our first night with an ice-cold jamaica the service sucks. Just imagine that the villas are such a good value, that even with the terrible service we experienced, we are still ranking this a solid 4 stars!

Pro Tip: Mexican Nationals, take your ID with you to Chichen for special admission price!

Room Tip: All of the rooms are great!

The food was really good and so was the service. The hotel had cool trees growing through it which made for a very unique environment. It's location is great, just a few mins walking distance from chichen itza. The area is very secluded and quiet, my wife and I went for a walk in the evening (super safe area). My biggest complaint is that the beds are small and hard. If they got new beds the hotel would be perfect. But as far as value goes... It's the cheapest hotel around, so you get what you pay for. I still recommend this hotel as a nice back packing stop.

Very nice place, quiet, there is no TV, so forget anout mundane things, excellent for couples, very romantic. Great service, and friendly persons all around. Rooms are nice and clean. Highly recomended. I would love if the hotel could issue a guest pass to the park after your stay if you want to go back to the Chichen Itza ruins again. They are marvellous!

We stayed there for one night. It is a very beautiful hotel with nice pool, and it is within 5 min walk to the east entrance of Chichen Ítza. Not cheap, but good value for money. We Would go there again.

I had a really hard time deciding whether to go with Villas Arqueologicas or Mayaland. I debated back and forth forever. I have chronic foot pain, so the fact that Mayaland is a tiny bit closer to the ruins was very tempting. I bit the bullet, though (after reading practically every single TripAdvisor & Expedia review for both hotels - there was no clear winner) booked Villas Arqueologicas, and crossed my fingers. After we arrived, I realized that the difference in distance is extremely minimal and definitely not worth the extra price of Mayaland...or the nuisance of having to pay for drinking water there...or the noise of all the tour buses...or the reportedly overpriced food. Besides all that, after walking past Mayaland a couple of times, we really did prefer the smaller scale and more intimate feel of Villas Arqueologicas. The staff was friendly, the room was adorable, the A/C rocked, the food was good, and the WiFi was handy (available everywhere but the rooms).

All that being said, the service was hit or miss (we stayed 2 nights and never had our room cleaned or water restocked) and there were no phones. I'm cool with no phones in the room, but a courtesy phone in the lobby at least? I needed to check on my kiddos back home and had no way to do it without getting a taxi into town to find a pay phone. I asked at the front desk and they sent me on a short walk to Mayaland hotel(!) where I bought a calling card, was directed to a hut with a couple of pay phones (neither of which worked), and then was informed that I could not use the Mayaland hotel phone instead because I was not a guest. :( Hmmm...maybe this is where actually staying at Mayaland would have been convenient...plus, they had a coffee bar...

Anyway, Villas Archeologicas was a quiet little place, which we liked. June is the low season, though, so I'm not sure what it's like at other times. Regardless, I would say that staying within walking distance of the ruins is DEFINITELY the way to go because you can get there early and get some incredible pictures before the heat and the crowds get out of hand. Your ticket is good all day, so you can walk back to your room for a dip in the pool and a siesta before heading back to the ruins to make deals with all the souvenir vendors. Besides, if you were in a bus or a taxi, you'd miss out on making friends with all the iguanas along the way!
