Great Parnassus Family Resort
Ranked #70 of 176 Hotels in Cancun
Reviewed March 25, 2014

I went on a girls trip 3/13-3/19.
My girlfriend and I had a beautiful room with an ocean view #643
Bed was firm but I slept great every night!
The room was clean.
Air conditioning worked fine. We did not hear any noise from the hotel or guests.
The food was average. I was happy with eating what I wanted, when and where I wanted it.
We did enjoy the Japanese restaurant and Pier 12 at The Golden. Breakfast was also very good. We mostly ordered room service for breakfast the night before and it was delivered on time. The veggie omelet was my favorite.
When we asked for bottled water at a restaurant to bring back to our room the waiters always gave it to us. We did not pay for water.
The service was great. Really enjoyed chatting with Alejandro and Miguel. All were super nice and accommodating. Drinks were amazing. Always got what we asked for. Insulated cup was a great tip. We didn't need refills often.
Beach was nice. It was very windy when we were there.
Guests who reserve shaded spots early and don't use them for hours are inconsiderate. It shouldn't be tolerated.
Pool looked amazing. We mostly hung out at the beach so we only swam briefly in the swim-up bar and adult pool.
The entertainment was very up-beat and accommodated all ages.
Jose was wonderful at the travel agency. We had a lot of fun with him and he helped us decide which excursion best suited us.
He also helped us expand our Spanish vocabulary.
Swimming with dolphins was awesome!
We always tipped $1 for a drink and $5 for a meal. The staff works very hard. It was our pleasure to give them additional tips.
We did take the city bus for $1. It stops right by the entrance of the hotel and we didn't have any problems.
I enjoyed the family resort even though we didn't have kids with us.
I hope to go back again!

This was our 7th visit to the Great Parnassus... Just returned from a 10 day trip.. We enjoy it so much that we bought into the "Club Parnassus Membership" 3 years ago... lots of nice little 'perks' for members... We are 'beach' people, so we head to the beach daily, so I can't say much about the pool area, other than it is always hopping with activities and people seem to enjoy themselves. The ocean water is incredible, blue as blue can be, it's nice to be able to see your toes. Anny Garcia is our favorite waitress on the beach, as our drink cups empty, she is right there with refills!!! Her associate Jonathan is great too, he works the beach area and many of the different restaurants, wherever he is needed. We also met Elfridio Pena, the manager of the restaruants and bars and he planned a special meal for us on our last night... A nice finishing touch to a great vacation. We like to visit the 10th floor Sanctorum restaurant for breakfast most mornings, always greeted with a smile from the hostess, Selene, the restaurant manager, Deiser and our friendly waiters, Freddy, Luis and Alex... Always a fantastic, filling, special order beakfast, and mimosas to start the day... We enjoy all of the restaurants, but Michele's is our favorite, great meal, just remember you have to be dressed for Michele's, not fancy, but no shorts, sandals, flip flops, t-shirts, etc... Same rule applies at the Shangri-La at the Golden Parnassus, if you are willing to dress up a little bit for dinner, these are two restaurants worth going to. All other restaurants are casual! As for the appearance of the hotel, it's not perfect, it's a beach place that has over 900 rooms, they can only do so much at a time. Over the years we have seen constant repairs (and not in a negative sense) and it is always clean. Something is always being painted or replaced, Employees from maintenance staff, housekeeping, restaurants, etc. are always busy. Any complaints that I have are petty little ones that I was able to discuss with staff directly or in the questionairres that they have you fill out. Nothing worth complaining about in this review. I wouldn't want a little complaint to alter someone's total views about vacationing here... One great aspect of this hotel is that the staff members are always smiling and happy to greet you... always willing to assist you, they are never grumpy or unpleasant... So if you want a vacation place to relax, enjoy the sun and beach, and be treated nicely by a great friendly staff, go to the Great Parnassus!!!

Room Tip: Ocean suites have spectacular views..... what better way to wake up on vacation and sit on your balc...

Just returned yesterday after spending 6 days here with my husband and two girls ages 8&11. This hotel is basic you get what you pay for. The food is awful. My kids ate buttered noodles and pizza all week. The rooms smell musty, no mini fridge and awful sewer smell in the bathroom. If you want quiet and relaxing at the pool this is not the hotel for you. They were playing Guns and Roses and Metallica at the pool. The drinks are a joke. You get a small plastic cup filled with a pre-made piña colada mix and then they pour alcohol on top. You mix it yourself and if you want a pineapple slice in your drink you do it yourself. We have been to other all inclusive resorts and this was just awful. The idea behind all inclusive is so you don't have to carry cash but they don't let you charge anything to the room. They had pottery painting for the kids and airbrush tatoos but you have to pay cash for all of that. All the restaurants are open for dinner but only the snack bar and Magnus are open for lunch. The first day there we went to the snack bar and got burgers and cheese fries. Well the cheese is cold and let me just say we each took one bite of the burger and threw it out. So then we head to Magnus for lunch which is basically stations of Mexican, Sushi and Pasta. They don't change what they offer though so it's the same thing everyday. By day 3 we couldn't take it and went to La Isla shopping center and ate at Chilis. We went back again another night to eat at Johnny Rockets. We walked next door to the Iberostar and that was so much nicer. If you are looking for a cheap, very basic hotel with lousy food then this is it! We wished we would have spent an extra $500 to be at a nicer hotel. The only positive was we had great weather and the beach was nice.

Room Tip: We were in room 227 and the bathroom smelled like a sewer...we were gagging it was so bad.

Myself and 4 friends went to the great p for vacation. Overall had a good time. The only downfalls were too many kids at the swim up bar and the room air conditioning did not get very cool. The staff at the restaurants were the best. If you want the best at the buffet get Lucio and Carlos. Slide them a couple bucks and they will run their butts off for you. For drinks in the hotel or the beach look for Gloria or Taracita. Great workers and very polite.

Room Tip: When you walk in the lobby ask for a room on the north side of the hotel as there is a noisy air con...

The Lobby staff was worthless and of no help whatsoever , however the rest of the staff was wonderful and worked very hard! Not a large selection of drinks. The food at the Japanese restaurant was good everything else was very " average" . The view from the room was beautiful, that being said the room itself was kept clean but everything was falling apart and needs serious renovation. The mold in the bathroom was absolutely disgusting! You have to order water from room service and if you ask downstairs you then have to purchase it. Check in was awful and we stood in line for an hour because there only had one person working. Was told when making the reservation what sort of room we would have and that is not what we got. The beds are pillows are like rocks! I will say other than the front lobby which is very important the rest of the staff was very curtious and very helpful and they work extremely hard!

Room Tip: Best view is from upper floors!

My husband and I just returned from a week-long stay at the Great Parnassus to celebrate our 10th anniversary. I had done a lot of reading of reviews and found that most were favorable, so we went ahead and chose this resort. We had an amazing ocean-suite room (644) and loved every bit of it! All of the options on the steam-shower did not work, but who cares? The shower worked and we were clean! The room was very clean. The bed was really firm, which we were not used to, so that was a negative but hey, who needs sleep on vacation, right? It rained a few days while we were there and yeah they had to put towels down when the roof leaked. No big deal to us, as the staff was very active in getting it dried up as quickly as possible! The towels soaked up most of the rain but they came along right away with mops and squeegees to get it cleared as soon as the rain stopped. I found that the staff are very busy working to keep the common areas clean and they appear to work non-stop! The food was okay, but we weren't expecting gourmet. We at one night at the Manhattan for dinner and it was alright. We ate a few times in Magnus. Loved the tostadas at the Mexican station. The guacamole from the veggie bar was amazing paired with the chips from the Mexican station. The Italian was not bad either. We absolutely LOVED El Maguey. Each day featured a different flavor of margarita and the food was outstanding! Samurai was just eh....not bad but not amazing. The wait staff was extremely overworked the night we visited. Breakfast at Sanctorum was also outstanding. The waiters here usually work breakfast and then go to work lunch at El Maguey. It's nice when they begin to recognize you and learn your names! The snack bar Bora Bora was alright, pretty greasy but I highly recommend the chicken strips! Two nights we went to the Golden Parnassus for dinner. The Old Barn was really good but we were not too impressed with Pier 12. The bar at the adults only pool was our favorite. Julian the regular bartender is amazing and will know your name by the end of your first visit and greet you each time you return! My only complaint about this is that there were not enough bar stools and it closes so early (hours 10-6). Also we noticed that the swim-up bar in the adults pool was not open and apparently has not been for a number of years. As many have mentioned before, it's nearly impossible to get a chair by the pool unless you "reserve" one by early, early morning. We noticed people "reserving" chairs on the beach also but were always able to find a spot. Overall, we really enjoyed this resort and will definitely return with our children as I hear the kids club is also great!
