“Solid 3 1/2 star resort with 5 star service!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 19, 2014

Very pleased with our get away at Great Parnassus. We stayed a week in January and had a great trip. Resort is easy to get around and we found the food to be very good. The French restaurant was excellent and we went back a second night. No reservations needed at any, just plan to go a little early and enjoy a drink at any of the numerous bars, they will come and get you when your table is ready. Very big beach (did have a bit of a hard time finding chairs if you did not get to the beach early but not too bad) Received a free upgrade to the lagoon view and loved it. Beautiful sunsets every night and near the adult pool toward the evening when the beach became shaded. Wait service on beach was excellent, the rooms cleaned promptly and with a phone call each day, the refrigerator was full of XX's!

Just returned from 10 nights at the Great Parnassus and after reading negative reviews before we went, I had to write this review.
The hotel was very clean and tidy, and all the staff were so friendly and helpful and they worked so hard around the clock.
I definitely recommend this resort and will be booking again for next year

We had an amazing week in Cancun. We were originally suppose to stay at the Golden Parnassus but we were shipped over like many others but it turned out for the best! The Great was far bigger and much nicer, we were also bumped up to the VIP package do to the over booking issues at the Golden. We will not be booking anything with the Golden in the future but the Great was Great. Our awesome bartender at Poula's sport bar Alejandro, made our trip! He took the time to make sure we were happy and helped us by answering all question which I'm sure got annoying. We would stay again with or without kids.

Room Tip: All were very clean.

Positive: Traveled Jan24-Jan31 2014/ Rm 503 Weather was beautiful except 1 day of rain. Great hotel was if you have kids, big hotel. French Restaurant was my favorite, buffett was OK. Beach was great, made the best of our stay. Our group was 5 couples. One of the couples had booked at the Golden, adults only. The Great had a shuttle once an hour to go to the sister hotel Golden if you choose. I would prefer to book at the Golden in the future. All servers at both hotels were friendly.
Negative: Our room was an upgrade but not everyone in our group had a great room. Heard complaints from travelers that booked at Golden and ended up at the Great, overbooking. Huge difference considering Golden more of a resort not hotel and no kids. Took shuttle to Golden several times and did prefer food there over the Great. Both hotels could use more huts on the beach for shade. The Great needs some maintenance, it rained, hotel had some leaks from roof, they put towels down, safety hazard. Had two items taken from our room from our carry on, never checked in, with us at all times. Coming from USA Midwest/snow my husband had a winter beanie it was taken, checked complete room twice day we were leaving, didn't notice that we also had a leather belt taken from carry on until we got home. I realize it is our word against the maid (male) Just my husband, self, and maid in that room. Never had anything taken in my life from my hotel room/huge disappointment and disturbing. Even did extra tipping. We believe that even though there were some negative moments, we always make the best of what is available. We truly had a great time with our friends and met some terrific travelers.

Room Tip: Our room which was 503 was a upgrade and overlooked the adult pool...nice view.

After reading many reviews, I realized that this hotel was going to accommodate our basic needs but not excel. True to form, that is exactly what happened. No complaints from me. It gets the job done. Pools, all inclusive, inexpensive, nice beach and great weather. Dont expect 4 or 5 star vacation. This is at best a 3.5 star. Start with that expectation and enjoy it.

Here is a list of thoughts regarding this property (we just came home yesterday). We were a family of four. Mom, Dad, 8 year old girl and a 4 year old boy.

1. Beach is very nice.
2. Staff, in our experience, very helpful and nice.
3. Service was exceptional
4. Room - Family room was good. We actually looked at upgrading to the a club suite. But we would take the family room even if the price was the same. The bunk beds and king sized bed were more important than a higher floor or a la carte restaurant. I suggest to anyone that visits to ask to see an upgrade room and decide for yourself.
5. Facilities. Amazes me how a 15 year-ish resort can get worn out so quickly. But hey this is a 3 to 3.5 star resort.
6. Restaurants - Big Ben was good for the fillet. Samurai is a mexican version of a japanese restaurant, dont expect Benihana's. But Samurai food was ok. Buffet restaurant was great for breakfast, smoothies very good and omelets really really good. Bora Bora snack bar was good for a snack bar. I really like the steak sandwiches and the chicken fingers. Desserts overall were very lacking, but, less calories! Gotta stay positive.
7. TVs. only a couple of english speaking channels to watch at night. No big deal to me but wouldve been nice to have some more channels.
8. Pools - large infinity pools and smaller shallow pool were great. Only drawback is they were a little dirty in the morning; empty cups and cigarette butts floating. I just man'd up, cleaned up the trash so the kiddies can play. It would've been nicer if the staff would skim the pools early in the morning.
9. Pools - kiddie pools in front. I was disappointed in these. Our two kids played a little the first day and never asked to go back to them again. The large slides had water that was too cold. No loungers near the kiddie pool/ship, not very relaxing. Plus, a lot of the lazy parents just dump their kids off so it is a little chaotic because the ration of kids to adults is high.
10. Kids club. Our kids typically dont like kids club. And we really plan our vacations to spend time with our kids not avoiding them. So I cant really comment on how well these clubs perform. Ladies seemed nice enough.
11. Shops. Typical stores but they didnt seem to overpriced. We didnt really shop much there tho.
12. Excursion. I think, as with most resorts likely, is that they overcharge for excursions. We almost booked the pirate ship dinner cruise. They quote twice as much (400 dollars vs 200). So be savvy when booking excursions.
13. Internet. Very expensive. I think I was told 75 dollars per week per device. I decided that my wife and I would just pay the verizon international data charges instead. I think the 3G cellular data is faster anyway.
14. Clientele. This is where I will try to not be a jerk. But cheaper resort brings some people with less manners. Little things like people trying to enter an elevator before everyone exits, letting their kids run out of control, slamming doors (air flow causes the doors to slam but... you will hear doors slam shut every minute or so..., people talking/yelling in restaurants, just generally rude people...).

In summary, lots of bang for the buck. It doesnt excel at anything but not sure you are really promised a 5 star resort. So understand your expectations. This is an american duck dynasty crowd sprinkled in with UK/Euro folks. You are not going to go home and brag about the resort. You may likely not return. But you will enjoy your time if you want to.

Our kids absolutely loved it. The wife and I thought it was ok but will likely not return. We also dont regret the trip. But we probably wont do Cancun again. Costa Rica is next on the list.

Room Tip: Dont go for an upgrade immediately. Take a look at the rooms and then decide. We actually preferred...

Me and my husband we stayed in Great Parnassus for 11 nights and it was the best choice. It was amazing holiday. We recently come back from great destination and Great Parnassus makes our holiday special. Especially we loved Bar Atlantis and the best bartender Guillermo. Also karaoke bar with another best bartender Miguel. We are so sorry, we didnt have a time to say them goodbye, because they were off on our last day...But we liked them, they are the best staff in Great Parnassus. Very friendly, smiling and making fun :-) But also we can't forget best female staff as well - definetely Anny - lobby bar. She was amazing, she made our holiday special, she cares about us so much, very lovely staff. And another lady - Gloria, she was making fun, simly we felt like with friends. Great Parnassus must be very lucky to have staff like them, because they are very important part of holiday. We felt very welcome and we are sure, we will come back to Cancun and to same hotel. We liked food, room, especially lovely and friendly staff, fun at the pool was very nice. Thank you for holiday
