Reviewed February 12, 2013

We stayed here Feb 2nd - 8th and I read all the below reviews after we booked and based on some I was nervous about this stay however we had an excellent time. I like to remember that we are in MEXICO not in the USA where we are used to certain food being prepared the way we like it and so forth. So many people on here complain about food and beverages, its crazy oh and don't forget about the ones who complain about the rooms. I go on vacation to sit at the beach/pool I don't go to hang out in my hotel room the only thing I want to do in there is sleep. The food was just fine, we like to eat big breakfasts and then we like to have light lunches and out for dinner, breakfast buffets were good and the Sunset Grill is highley recommened for lunch - we had no issues or complaints with any of the restaurants and I am a PICKEY eater! Tip for breakfast - bacon is behind the counter with the omlet maker, just ask them if you want some they will give you plenty - also ask for chips and guacamole its not on any menu but its sooo good! Yes this is a family resort so expect kids, if you dont like them then dont stay here. We didn't travel with kids but we had no issues with them swimming in the big pool- no where does it say that kids can't swim in there and plenty of the kids used the kids facilities - every day we saw kids using them! Plenty of chairs around the pool and beach - no need to do any chair saving. Resort is close to lots of shopping - use the bus system - don't use a taxi - the bus cost like 8 pesos compared to a 10 dollar taxi ride - also the bus system is not a taxi service so don't expect the driver to drop you off where you want them to drop you off (another peeve of mine)!

Room Tip: We had ocean view and we had an excellent view of the ocean and of the pool deck - room 2375 on the...

3 of us (ages 24-28, men) travelled to this resort in the second week of February. Was a little nervous as some of the reviews were quite negative. Cost $60usd rtrn from Airport to Resort via TAXi company. Arrived had no issues checking in. They had one of their staff tell us what was going on that week at the resort and while sitting another brought us drinks and shots of tequilla. After that we went to our room on the first floor, next othe 24hr Cafe (which had self-serve beer and liquor on tap). I will add that the only beer they had there is Dos Eqis which taste terrible (to me at least). Our room was a standard hotel room essentially, facing the front of the building. It was a little noisy as we were next to the maids corridor but we were so tired at the end of the day hearing them in the morning wasn't issue.

The beach was spectacular. A lot of chairs (100+) and clean waterfront. The people at the resort seemed to be more family oriented and age 30+. No crying babies that I noticed and other guest were quite friendly and just seemed to want to relax.

The restaurants on-site were good; much better food than I anticipated. The buffet outside was fantastic and mimosas were readily available. No one got sick while we were there.

The really push the spa packages and eventually I gave in to a massage. Well worth it although I don't think they truly know what they're doing as it's the exact same massage every time (they do it in synchronization on couples massages). The hot tub is a hidden gem there that not to many people knew about or thought they had to pay extra for. It's free, the only con is that you have to check in through the spa were again they try to sell you packages.

I would go back again in a heart beat to this resort as I'm not interested in partying with the 21 year olds any more and more enjoy relaxing on the beach, smoking cigars and having a siesta in the shade while laying on a hammock. We did attempt to go to Senor Frogs and Coco Bonga but it was ridiculously expensive $45-$70 and would not talk down rates at door. It wasn't worth it for us to pay as they were closing in a few hours and we weren't going to get our dollar out of it.

Room Tip: If you are one to sleep in on Vacation and need quiet, avoid first floor.

Just left Gran Caribe last wednesday, where did the time go ?We were there for two weeks & enjoyed every day, even the rainy days. The activity department was awesome , they work so hard to amuse young & old . Big thanx to Dana, Benjamin, Mark, Bierley, Danny, Gama...whom we will miss so much upon our return to the hotel. This is our 4th year at this hotel, even though we travel to other destinations we enjoy this hotel as "home away from home".All the staff was awesome, polite, friendly and respectful. When we put our sign do not desturb it was honoured every time, the cleanliness was exceptional in our room , hallways as well as eating areas & the pool. We would recommend this hotel to anyone . In the future we hope to share our stay with our grandsons .Thanx to Guadalupe for taking care of us at the bar ,Chelly for taking care of us at the pool and the beach, Daniel, Ruby, Alehandro, there are so many great hard working people always smiling .Special thank you to the little lady that my husband call s his "omlet lady" .

My husband and I just returned from 11 nights at the Gran Caribe Real in Cancun. We were pleased with the resort; nice rooms (we arrived to find our bed had been dressed up with towel swans and rose petals and champagne - had mentioned it was our 23rd wedding anniversary in our reservation) however our room, 2557 was facing the kids pool area and the huge generators that sit across the lot. The noise generated from the generators was super loud and as a result we really didn't sit out on the balcony at all which was too bad as it would have been nice in the mornings and at night.

The restaurants were OK - our favourite was the Il Pescatore, which is their italian one. Ask to sit in Fily's section when you go - he is the most amazing waiter! I would put him up against any of the waiters I have experienced at major etablishments in Chicago, New York or Toronto and I think he would win hands down. Fily truly wants you to have a good time and you cant help but enjoy your note when he is your waiter. Thanks Fily - for 2 memorable evenings. Gotta have the italian coffee there - what a show! Other than that, the food was fairly average but the buffet restaurants do have a good selection each day so you are likely to find something to eat.

We did agree to do the "club" presentation and it was not too painful - they take you to thier adults only resort next door - the Royal, which was nice and then they take you to the room on the roof to put the screws to you! We listened and then my husband just bluntly told them that we would not be committing to thier club. They tried a few more approaches but quickly gave up and let us go. We did get 1000 pesos (about $100 U.S.) and ended up using those for a steak and lobster dinner on the beach which was very nice - jazz band plays for you on the beach at night and that was very romantic and nice.

Our only complaint was the amount of young kids at the big pool. This resort has amazing facilities for children - a huge pirate ship waterslide thing, a kids pool, a kids club and even thier own mini golf etc - but NONE of the kids use these facilities! They all hang out at the big pool with their parents because that is where the music is and likely where their parents want to hang. The kids were a bit annoying and noisy at the pool and after a few days the pool was pretty dirty (sand, bandaids, and other crap they had tracked in). The staff did thier best to keep it clean but it was a bit of a losing battle.

The service at this resort was excellent - the servers work very hard to ensure you always have a drink in your hand and that your are getting your needs met.

Nightly entertainment in the show room downstairs each night was good too.

This resort is also only a 5 minute walk to the festival mall and about a 15-20 minute walk to the big ISLa shopping mall which also has a nice movie theater too. Both malls are just down the road from the resort ( turn left at the entrance to the hotel). We walked once and took a taxi the next time (about $10 each way) so a nice way to do something a bit different if you want to.

All in all we enjoyed the resort but likely will try and find an adults only resort next time to have a bit more peace and quiet.

Room Tip: we stayed in room 2557 on 5th floor and the noise from the generator was very loud. This room faces...

Seven of us went to this resort at the beginning of Feb 2013. The service at this resort was fantastic. Specifically, Enrique Zamaripa, who was the host at Albatros. Enrique was extremely accomodating because my wife has a GLUTEN allergy. He made sure she had safe and still appetizing meals whether it was for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Special bread in the morning and white-fish, shrimp, veggies, meat, you name it...Enrique was phenomenal! Apart from that, our experience was superb, in consideration of the fact we there were 3 children with us...all under the age of 5. From the beach to the pool to the restaurant, each day was a delightful breeze.

Room Tip: We had a view of the ocean and a very quick walk to the beach.

I was very pleased with the quality of the room, I was less than impressed with the food and alcohol options at the hotel.
The chain rates themselves for this resort as a 5 star and my research suggests that it is rated as a 4 and feel it might not even be worthy of this rating.
There were two fine dining options and was informed that I could only dine at each of them one time. The house red or white wines were terrible and in comparison, on the Captain Hook Pirate dinner show we were on during the same visit we found the wine much more drinkable. The wine options offered were expensive for the brands and it almost felt we were actually paying for our meal this way.
The bar brands of alcohol such as a gin are very poor and no option to have a premium brand. In comparison when staying at a 4 Star resort in Puerto Vallarta last year all we had to do was to ask for the better brand.
Food service at the breakfast buffet was poor. Bacon was hidden and you had to ask for it. When ordering an omelet or eggs any style it seemed they can only manage one order at a time. The lunch options in both buffets were basically the same and only a limited options at the al a carte restaurant.
At the competing chain you could order breakfast and lunch al a carte, lunch you could order anything from a hamburger dressed the way you want it, to the catch of the day. Plus there was a buffet option. Food service as at the beach as well.
Simply put – I feel you can get a lot more value out of looking at other options

We are very sad you did not enjoy our food and drinks perhaps it was a a lack of information from our part because we fail to inform you that regardless of the buffet items you can order basicaly enything you have crave of, our restaurante capitais and chefs are instructed to prepare it for you and I there will be no more restrictions as to how many times you want dine at our specialty restaurantes (subjet to availability)

Thank your for your kind review, we do take them seriously

Shout out to Benjamin and victor who made the trip that much better! Two entertainment guys who were always coming up to us to say hi or make us smile! Activities at the pool lasted all day and got you up and moving, music was awesome too!! Would definitely go back there again! The location was so close to shopping and the party scene!
And of course the all inclusive drinks were the best! Would recommend this resort to any one!
