“Great 5 days!!!!!”
Reviewed November 6, 2013 via mobile

Just returned from my 5 days/ 4 nights staying here at the RIU Cancun. This resort is in the best location close to the clubs, restaurants, a little mall and other things. The food was good as well as the drinks. They have 4 pools, and when you stay here you can go to the RIU Caribe and eat and drink there during the day. I will be back next year with a group in August.

Just finished a weeks visit & happy that previous reviews about staff excellence was on target. The front desk was the best I have met in over 45 years of traveling. I had a mobile phone problem which took Laura & Paola some time to fix but they wouldn't let it go until it was solved. No matter how many times you walk by the desk, everyone smiles and says hello.

Buffet food was as good as I've encountered with fresh food and huge variety, & wait staff that was tops. Alas, the Ala la cartes were not really worth writing about.

Rooms are pretty typical of a 4 star resort & as expected & were fine. As for previous outdated reports...yes...but everything is outdated the day it opens its doors.. Never found too much dampness but if you leave the patio door open the floor will be wet in minutes. The mini bar was larger than most resorts & always full & stayed very cold. Beds are firm but comfortable.

Gym is small with dumbbells 5-45 lbs, 6=10 machines, has tile floors with one small mat to lay on. The floor is dirty, hardly ever see glasses for water, or no water in coolers and they two ladies out front couldn't care less. The only exercise ball was half inflated & they dismissed that with " no pump" The towels they issue are small hand towels..bring your pool towel. Can't figure why such an otherwise customer conscious resort would allow this.

Pools (3) are small by most resort standards but adequate. Loads of loungers & umbrellas. Bars are just steps away as are washrooms and food...all very convenient. When arriving check out all pools before choosing as the quiet pool is far different than the other two.

Beach is excellent, especially for Mexico & no need bringing beach shoes. The water was warmer than the pools and easy to get to swimming depth. I didn't bring my snorkel & regretted it as there are a lot of fish offshore.

This was our first AI which was above 3 floors high and with such a small land area. However, it does have everything with very little walking. I would not like to be there in high season as the loungers are literately glued together, side by side, front to back, row after row. I don't know how you could even get to your lounger.

I would definitely go back for a weeks vacation as the staff plays such a large part in the success of any trip.

Room Tip: read the forums for a week or so to get a sense of where your preference would be.

I loved being here but my only issue is that I like places that are bigger. Nothing to do with the place but just about me liking more than a hotel even though it was very good.

Food was super amazing and the weather was ok for one day and really good for the others.
Still recommend it if you are into clubbing which is near by and going shopping which is also close.

Room Tip: If into clubs, this is a good place to come and bring some $$ for tips (15-25 would be good for the...

Food choices were excellent. Room was ok, nothing special. Cant drink the water or use it when brushing your teeth. Beach was great! Entertainment was ok. Loved the swim up bar. Close to shopping and night life. Had an ocean view room and it was great! Staff was great.

Room Tip: Get one close to elevators, halls are long.

What do I care about when it comes to my opinion on a hotel?
Entertainment during the day and entertainment during the night. I don't expect much in terms of meals as long as there are many options as I'm picky.
I've been on almost 20 vacations to other countries and about 8 to Mexico/Jamaica/Dominican Republic.

This hotel absolutely nailed it in terms of the entertainment and location. The staff were so friendly, I even have them added on Facebook! Many resorts have an activities board which says what the activities of the day are... and then they don't even follow it. This hotel absolutely did and they kept the audience entertained. They had contests at the pool every day at 3pm (when most people were too drunk to do any of them properly so it was funny) and dancing and water games. It was so much fun!! But there was also time to just sit around and tan in quiet, which I know some people go to resorts for.

Each night, the hotel picked a club to go to and for a fee (which was ~$80.. don't really remember) they transport you there on a bus with a bunch of other people from the hotel and give you free liquor. Coco Bongo (the popular one that everyone talks about) was one of the clubs and I don't remember the rest of the names.. but they were all great! They had great music and were very popular - seriously hundreds of people there. One night we went to a club with a pool in it that had a bikini contest. So much fun! Also it was so close to the hotel you could walk back to your hotel!

I went with my mom and younger brother. My mom liked the hotel as well. I liked the entertainment, she liked the relaxation - yup, that's right, one hotel had two different vibes going on at the same time!

The nightly shows were not very good... but they tried at least. Karaoke was my fav - I made some awesome friends there.
I went at the end of April 2012, which is not a very busy time, but it was very busy there!

SUMMARY:
room was average, food was good, drinks were phenomenal (I definitely recommend the chocolate martini - OMG), staff are amazing, entertainment was amazing.
I would recommend and have recommended this resort to many people.
All was well and I would absolutely go again!

Just got back from a 3 day get away at the Riu Cancun. We have stayed at many hotels in Cancun, and I must say, the Riu has the best pool area so far. Multiple pools to choose from, all very beautiful with ocean views. The beach is also wonderful! Soft, white sand and crystal clear blue water. Always lots of loungers to choose from as well, not too crowded.

The hotel is quite dated, but still a very nice place. The rooms could use an update, but we hardly spent any time there. The room had everything you could want, (balcony, safe, mini bar stocked with bottled water, booze, flat screen tv) including a beautiful ocean view!

The one thing negative thing I would say, is the food. It's okay, but not the best I've had. The Japanese restaurant was very good! Steak house was alright, never tried the Brazilian one. The buffet was average.

But other than the food, the Riu Cancun is a pretty good hotel! Family friendly, but not overly crowded with kids like some other hotels. Staff were all super nice and friendly. And it is in a great location to walk to the bars/restaurants. Would definitely stay here again!

Just got back from the RIU Cancun.

Food excellent, staff wonderful, sorry but thats where the praise ends.

Dated rooms, shabby, in fact dangerous slippery rooms where I slipped and fractured my left wrist (compound fracture) and had to have 9 stitches in my forehead from the same accident. My medical bill was £12,000. Also rooms very damp with condensation all the time, clothes felt damp to the touch as did the sheets on the bed whenever you got into bed. PLEASE BEWARE OF THIS IF YOU STAY AT THIS HOTEL.

The rest of the hotel was very dated, it was like sailing on the Titantic.

Will never return to this hotel bad experience.

Room Tip: Just to be careful when walking in the rooms.
