My wife and I stayed here from Dec. 31, 2012-Jan 7., 2013 in an all-inclusive package from Westjet Vacations from Toronto, in a preferred club room. Our first time in Cancun, though our third in the Yucatan/Quintana Roo region, and my fourth all-inclusive, though our first Secrets. Without question, this is one of the nicest places I've ever stayed in.
Check-In. We arrived around 2pm, and were immediately brought to the preferred check-in area on the 21st floor. Our room wasn't ready (Checkout is noon), but we happily were shown to the Sea Salt restaurant for lunch and passed some time with lunch and some drinks. The room took a little longer than they initially said, but i always assume as much anyhow, so I didn't mind. We returned to the preferred check-in area around 3:15 and finally got into the room around 3:45. Probably could have been a little smoother, but we didn't mind, and everyone was very professional. Our bags arrived within 10 minutes of getting in the room.
Room: preferred club junior suite. Wow, was our first impression and continued to be throughout our stay for just about everything. The room was HUGE and beautiful with double sinks and a gorgeous walk in shower with a rain shower head in addition to the usual shower head. Hot water was plentiful and the sundries were crazy complete, from large bottles of mint-rosemary shampoo/conditioner, to a shaving kit to a toothbrush/toothpaste to spf15 sunblock. The bed was king size and comfortable with king-size feather pillows and smaller qualofill (sp?) pillows. The decor was super relaxing, the room being decorated in soft whites and wood tones. the balcony was huge, and even though we were more towards the lagoon side, the views were spectacular. We were on the 21st floor.
Food. Again, wow. Didn't have a single bad meal, and even the breakfast and lunch buffets were amazing. We tried 5 of the 6 restaurants for dinner (all except sea salt, though we were there for lunch). Favourites were definitely the Asian-themed Dragon and the Bluewater Grill.Dragon was especially impressive and the very young French Canadian Chef has done an AMAZING job with the menu. Bluewater was also good and we had a terrific waiter the evening we were there: Luis was superb and we tipped him well.
Beach: beautiful sand, hot sun, good drinks and umbrella services, can't see how they could improve it. Only drawback was the very very rough ocean and crazy/unpredictable undertow. But that isn't the fault of the resort. We spent about half our time on the beach and were rarely without a drink. We also had no trouble with loungers but then again we tended to be out by 8:30/9am at the latest.
Preferred Club: Is it worth it? In my opinion, yes. The preferred club pool area with the butler and dedicated servers is worth the extra few dollars a day, presuming you like that sort of thing. Fabian (the butler) and Alejandro (the main waiter) while we were there were terrific and with a smaller crowd to service we were able to get to know them a bit. Two very nice guys doing an excellent job. The preferred club also seems to get you a larger room (but i'm not clear on that), a great concierge area on the 21st floor, with better quality drinks (e.g. grey goose as opposed to absolut), and hors d'oerves most of the day. Just raised the bar enough to make us feel were that much more pampered. And to those people who thought maybe you were missing out? Well, you were, a little, but honestly, the whole place is so beautiful, who complain about it!
The preferred club also gets you a bit more personalized service due to the dedicated staff on the 21st floor. For example, one night my wife had minor issue with her foot, something that we knew could be solved with a salt water bath. I talked to Miguel on 21 and within 30 minutes he had solved our problem, with concern and a smile. A special thanks to Miguel for this, who I think really went above and beyond.
Problems: only a few, and some I think are endemic to these types of resorts. 1. Could be noisy at night up until 10-11 pm as the pool area doubles as the entertainment area and those with rooms on the pool side (like us) can hear all the music etc.Of course, we are very early to bed when on vacation (sometimes as early as 9:30) and early risers, so even I don't think this is a very valid complaint! 2. As with every other resort I've been to, there is a no lounger reservation policy that everyone ignores. In the preferred area, there'd often be towels and personal belongings on the "best" loungers by 7am, and no-one sitting in them until 9:30 or so; the hotel seems reluctant to enforce this, but then again so does every other resort I've been to, including cruise ships; more of an overall problem then specific to secrets.
Final word: Wow. Can't recommend this place enough. From the rooms to the food to the beach there is enough attention to detail to keep all bu the most picayune people happy. Easily the best resort I've ever been to and easily a true 5 star resort.
