“Beautiful Hotel But Would Not Go Back”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 14, 2012

The hotel itself is fabulous, every piece of decor and furniture is modern and high end. That being said, this trip made me realize we prefer a more "resort" style hotel. We like a little privacy, long beach, hammocks, even a bit of quirky caribbean decor or music so you know youve made it out of the US! The hotel, grand as it was, almost felt like Vegas. "Cool" music Id hear at a dance club in our hometown, guests really dressed up, and everything super plain and modern (i guess too much so for my taste). The layout, a high rise building with 3 pools all compacted together just felt too stale. The palm trees were twigs, barely alive, and i yearned for some type of flowers and greenery or foliage in lieu of the concrete. If the Hyatt in Maui is your thing you would probably rate this hotel 5 stars. We would prefer the Royal Lahaina. We love Sandals Montego Bay. Just never felt that intimate resort vibe I'd been dreaming of. Don't know how else to explain it.
The food was excellent everyewhere! Even the room service. The service was exceptional. The Wi-fi sucked! The entertainment at night sucked as well, but I am sure this will improve greatly with time. We usually love the night time activities but the entertainers seemed as if they were doing a dress rehersal, but by their 100th shot im sure it will be great. The rooms were really nice but again all white and BORING. I would still stay at another resort by AM resorts as we loved Dreams in Cabo, it was a way different feel. Spread out and everyone remembered your name, just how we like it :) We may try Secrets Maroma eventually.

Room Tip: ask for a free upgrade, the worst theyll say is no. we did get a free upgrade to a jr suite!

If it’s peace and tranquillity you want then this is not the place for you. However, please read on…
For our 25th wedding anniversary we decided to visit The Vine, Cancun. Upon arrival you are greeted outside with music from half a dozen speakers mounted in the wall. Once escorted to the lobby and given a cool face/hand towel followed by a glass of champagne you then have to further endure the music. Once checked in you make your way to your room and in the lift, you’ve guessed it, more music.
Tranquillity at last, there is no music on the corridors to the room. We were given an upgrade to a junior suite on the 19th floor, one of the “preferred floors”. Going into the room was a real treat. Absolutely enormous with huge walk in showers , a bed for ten and the Plasma TV hung on the wall in front of it. Other refinements included mini bar (contents included in the inclusive package) docking station/radio, beautiful cotton robes and all the other bits and bobs you would expect from an up market hotel. Further, the room and its fittings were far more sumptuous than that of a room we stayed in at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel in Dubai.
Then we decided to go on to the balcony only to be greeted with more music from one of the 4 swimming pools that our room overlooked. The hotel next to this one is the Hard Rock Hotel which had a stage set up in a space in front of itself and adjacent to our room, just keep that in mind.
After a long flight from the UK we tried to have a little nap before delving in to the restaurants. This was impossible due to the noise which had now escalated from piped music by the pool being played at the same time as the afternoon live music (loud rock) being played at a lower pool. This was very tedious indeed.
In the evening, there was a show by the pool and the music combined with the Hard Rock hotel racket lead to complete nuisance until about 11.30 when the noise sank to a level that the balcony doors could keep at bay.
The following day we were moved onto the other slightly quieter side and thereafter just had to listen to the odd late night anthems from the other hotels pool (The Sandos).
Eventually after about four days you can turn yourself off to it apart from when you are having a drink in the piano bar or eating in the Dragons Asian restaurant (great food) when you can hear the lobby music over the different music being played within these two venues. Further, a quiet breakfast is also out of the question as the management deem it fit to once again have the music far too loud inside, and should you want to have your morning feast on the terrace enjoying the sea lapping up on the beach, you then have to endure the music from the swimming pools ! There is simply now escape from it and there were no shortage of Americans complaining about the same. All it would appear to no avail.
On the plus side, I have to say that ALL the staff here without exception where extremely friendly and very efficient. The service is 1st Class. The food which is served in the A La Carte restaurants and poolside bars is absolutely divine and top quality, and again all included in the package. Should you desire almost anything can be taken in the room from the 24 hour room service at no extra cost.
The breakfast feast caters for everyone, an endless buffet of hot and cold meats, fish, eggs, salads, cereals, crepes and Mexican delicacies along with a choice of 9 different fruit juices and chocolate milk. Too many different breads to mention. If you don’t find food you like in this hotel then you need to give up and stay at home. They have everything for everybody!
In the suites there is a butler to pamper to your every whim including a pressing service, this is free and laundry can be taken care of for a small charge. Nothing seems to be any trouble at any time of the day.
All the restaurants, bars and café’s etc. are fitted to a really high standard befitting of a real up market hotel.
The Spa my wife tells me was very good, but its not my bag. Don’t book it using the complementary discount vouchers given to you on arrival. Wait until they approach you either in the lobby or by the pool. You can then negotiate 50% off the treatment price list with ease.
Despite the very annoying music that a lot of people were complaining about, if they sort that out this would be a fantastic resort to stay in and I would go again. Without the musical rectification I wouldn’t go near the place ! I will watch avidly to see if the dedicated management team take these comments on board and if so the trend on Trip Advisor will change for the better.
I do hope they take this on board because this great hotel could be truly magnificent. At the moment its like being constantly in a discothèque.
People on Tripadvisor who have said this place is a good 3 star hotel posing as a five star are crazy, make no mistake this is a five star hotel in the true sense of everything luxurious and if they can make the place a lot more tranquil you’ll be fighting to book in the place. Currently it represents outstanding value for money (if you are hard of hearing).
The location is great 10-15 minutes drive from the airport and centrally located in the hotel zone enabling you with ease to go up or down town depending on what you want to see. No need for taxis as the bus stop is located only a 1 minute walk from the hotel. The bus service is very good. There is a bus every five minutes and it cost peanuts to get anywhere you like. Although the drivers do drive as though they have a death wish and I’m not a nervous passenger, ask my wife ! Hold on tight folks!

Room Tip: A room with even numbers puts you in a room not overlooking the pool and away from some of the noise...

We have just returned after 10 days. The staff at this resort are amazing and genuinely cannot do enough for you to make you feel loved and very welcome. The food is fabulous. The staff are genuinely excited about giving you a great holiday experience. The rooms are brilliant, we had a normal ocean view deluxe room, having decided not to upgrade and the room was great. Very spacious and immaculately clean, the whole resort is immaculately clean. The turndown service was amazing, every night our bed was turned down with our slippers placed at each side of our bed, bottle of water and glass placed by each side of our bed and a a breakfast menu placed on our bed to choose from if we wanted breakfast in our room which we did and it was fabulous. The room service was all inclusive and had a vast menu to choose from, delivered with a cheery smile and beautifully arranged on a table which could be wheeled onto your balcony so you could watch the ocean whilst you dined.

The service in the restaurants was great, as was the food. We had one bad experience in the restaurants but everyone has an off day and 1 out of 10 is a great percentage so we will put this down to a bad day.

Unfortunately the resort does have some negatives, the main one being the loud techno music playing in the reception, lifts and at the 3 downstairs pools. It was on a loop all day and just repeated all day. We chose this adults only resort for some peace and relaxation as our children have now grown up and after a lifetime of listening to their techno music from their bedrooms, we felt we had earned a rest from it for our 25 year wedding anniversary! Unfortunately a rest from it is not what we experienced at this resort. It was relentless. The music was loud and came from speakers which were placed all around all 3 pools. I asked to speak to the manager as a lot of guests were complaining about this and I was introduced to a lovely lady who said she would address the issue. I now understand that the Manager is a male so I am not sure who I complained to but the music did not stop. On several occasions, it was so loud in reception that we couldn't have a conversation comfortably with our friends. I complained to the entertainments manager who changed the music to tranquil for one day and then it reverted right back to loud techno the day after. I know of several other guests who complained but agin, it was never addressed.

It pains me to write this, as we had an amazing holiday but it was in spite of this and not because of it. There were a couple of minor irritations like a dressing table with a chair in the room and instead of a mirror above it, there s a tv on the wall meaning you had to stand at the sink to dry your hair, no hooks for dressing gowns in the room etc but as a new resort, you would expect there to be things that could be improved, it's par for the course.

Unfortunately the music ruined it for us, I bought a kindle for the holiday as I love to read by the pool on holiday but didn't get past page. 11 as I couldn't concentrate due to the music. I think there were a few guests who enjoyed the loud music but for me, a luxury 5 star resort should have tranquil or jazz music by the pool and there should always be one pool where it is quiet for those of us that love to unwind in peaceful surroundings and we were not afforded this luxury.

Every thing else was amazing, the waiters even re-folded your napkins whilst you got up to go the buffet, our glasses were never empty, the staff were over the moon to help regardless of whether you tipped but you were so overwhelmed by the amazing service that it was a genuine pleasure to tip.

In summary, the hotel has so many things perfect that will blow you away and if this irritating loud techno music is sorted out, i would recommend it and return in a heartbeat. Some of the reviews on here have been unfair when they talk of poor service etc as this is wholly incorrect but all comments regarding the music are correct! If that gets sorted, you really will have the holiday of your dreams and you won't stop smiling from beginning to end.

This was our 3rd trip to mexico and our 3rd all inclusive(we had been very impressed with The Royal in Cancun, but VERYdissapointed with the Sun Palace). We saw the great opening deals on Secrets The Vine, and decided to roll the dice, and spend our 10th wedding anniversary there-so glad we did!!!!

Check in was dicey: We had booked a preferred club room and I was under the impression that all rooms were floors 21 and up. No welcome drink. I ran to the bathroom while my husband finished the check in process in the main lobby. When I returned, we had been booked into a room on the 19th floor, and sent on our way(no directions). The time share/coupon people then jumped into action. After 12 hrs of travel, I was not having it and just wanted to go to our room. We got on a set of elevators and ended up at the preferred lounge on the 21st floor (you cant access floors 12-19 from this set of elevators). At this point my "witch switch" had been turned on. This is where we met Luis(concierge) and he turned the whole trip around from here:)

Luis was fantastic. He escorted us to our rooms, explained that we had all the preferred perks, and that the room was the same. He offerred to order us room service, poured us a beer, then showed us the property, preferred pool. He was so sweet-poor guy! I was so crabby:(

Room: Gorgeuos! Room 1903-couldnt get any better view! The halls are loud, just bring ear plugs:)

Preferred club: I loved the preferred pool, bar, and grill! When we werent at the beach,we hung out there everyday. Loved the staff. Luis was there, and took great care of us. The bar staff were so fun: Ismal, Blanca, and all the other severs were awesome!!! Eddiberto, the chef, made us some special meals there: grouper and shrimp tacos, this amazing shrimp guacomole appeitizer, and asada tortas. I think we hung out with staff more than the other guests! They made you feel so at home and like old friends.

Food: was the best I have ever had at any all inclusive....too much to list....actual mexican food.......lamb chops at the italian restuarant were amazing(i dont even like lamb).....great beef...... Breakfast buffet was awesome:(fresh tamales every morning)...everything was so good...I gained 4lbs...

Entertainment: they had something every night...bands...haunted house and outside dinner on Halloween...circ de soliel type show, mariachis, they worked very hard!!!! Our room over looked the entertainment area, se we spent several evenings watching from our balcony. Best view!!!!

Beach: Clean, beautiful, plenty of chairs....but beach drink service could have been better:(

Bars: Great! We loved Yolanda and Modesto in the main bar. SO fun!!

We would go back in a heartbeat!!! PS:We tipped....a lot... but didnt see others doing the same. Please tip these people! They work so hard, and it was so SAD to see some of these cheapskates not appreciating great service

There are so many positives to this hotel- an amazing lobby area, fabulous rooms, high standard of toiletries, excellent quality of drinks and the beautiful beach!! However for us the main positive should be the food - everywhere we ate was excellent, with th exception of Oilo where the food choices didnt suit us. The buffet at breakfast and lunch would be the best all inclusive buffet we have had anywhere. The service at all the restuarants was attentive and friendly and despiite one night having to wait in line for the Itlalian we walked straight into every restaurant each night and were served promptly. We had been worried about previous reviews saying that they waited hours for their meals. this didnt happen to us. Our favourite restaurant was probably Dragons although they were all to such a high standard it would be hard to choose.
The facilities throughout the hotel are immaculate, everything is constantly being cleaned. The lobby area and all the restaurants have a lovely relaxed feel which you immediately feel comfortable in.
We upgraded to Preferred and although our room was slightly larger, it really wasnt worth the additional despite the Preferred pool area being very nice the pool was freezing and often got busy in the afternoons hence we spent the rest of the holiday down in the main pool area. Our room was gorgeous, the bed VERY comfortable, the shower amazing and the complimentary toiletries a lovely touch. Negatives- the see through balcony is a pain, they should address this as everyone feels the same about privacy on the balcony. The other issue we had was maid service and turn down. We left the room each day at 7am and didnt return till around 3.30. Apparently we were one of the last rooms on the maids round so 3 days running we had no room service. We did complain and they registered that our room was to be clenaed in the morning and it was after this, however we just felt that a hotel this standard with a butler service could have noted our movements and cleaned the room accordingly. Similarily the whole time we were there we only had 2 turn downs services because we were once again at the end of the maids run and although we left the room around 6pm and never returned most nights till 9, they still missed us. However the standard of cleaning when it was done was first class.
Know this is repeating other reviewers but the sound proofing of the rooms was probably our biggest issue - you can literally hear every noise. We could hear word for word our neighbours televsion program because they had it on quite loud. We were woken by the people across the corridor having room service at 3am then at 5am by someone singing 'My Girl' in the corridor. It was noisy and we have never had this issue at any hotel before, possibly the marble hallways add to the problem but it is an issue!
At the start of our weeek the hotel was quite quiet and we got sunbeds easily, however towards the end of the holiday nearly every sunbed was taken around all the pools and it did feel busy. The pools were freezing but so many people must have complained that by the end of the week the temperature was much better. Pool service was slow but the quality of the drinks was excellent- we often just waited in line at the bar which was quicker. A lot of people were complaining about the music being too loud. This didn't bother us too much, sometimes it was just that the music choices were a bit too upbeat especially at 8am in the morning.
Pool entertainment was poor, with the exception of the pool party. All the guys on the entertainment team seemed like they were trying pretty hard. But we don't think the question of the day was really up to 5 star entertainment standard - 'Guess how many pages in the book I am holding? isn't really entertaining.
The effort that was made for the Halloween evening was exceptional and the whole hotel and Entertainment staff should be congratulated on a great night.
Overall this is a super hotel and for the price we got it at we would definately go back. However if the prices escalate the issues would need to be resolved.

Three years ago my wife and I stayed at the Secrets - Silversands down on Riviera Cancun. We had a good experience at that resort and were willing to go back again this year. Like many of the other reviewers we chose Secrets the Vine because it is brand new and we got a great deal going in early November. We just got back from 5 days holiday and here are our impressions:

Food: Overall food was better that other all inclusives including Silversands. The variety was nice and our favorite restaurants were Nebbiolo Ristorante and Barefoot Grill. In fact we ate at both restaurants multiple times. The other restaurants were good and we never had a bad meal anywhere. We ate in every restaurant and even had room service. Service was excellent and in some cases, exemplary. Big eaters beware: Secrets the Vine serves in what Americans would call "petite" portions. We had no issue with this but if you're looking for a giant plate overflowing with food this is not the place. The few times that I asked for another portion were granted with no issue and I always felt like there was plenty to eat despite the portion size.

Room: We had a junior suite ocean view that was roomy and comfortable. Ocean view is a bit of a stretch since the resort sits perpendicular to the beach so our best view was of the Hard Rock next door. Once facing properly the ocean view and lagoon view was spectacular especially at sunset. One thing to note, the lights are controlled by touch screens and can be a little quirky to figure out at first. The bellhop will show you how to work them and make sure that if you don't understand that you ask questions. We got in at night and kind of nodded and then had some laughs as we accidentally turned all the lights on in the middle of the night on a bathroom trip.

Drinks: Mostly the drinks were good. My wife was always willing to try the "drink of the day" while i stuck to the basics. After a few awful margaritas i found that i had to request a "premium" tequila which sometimes helped improve the drink. For tequila folks like me, their premium tequilas vary by bar but is mostly El Jimador (blanco) and 1800 Select. I found Don Julio a couple of times as well so temper your expectations. Generally i found the bartenders to pour heavy.

Beach: Beach was soft, white sand with just a little seaweed. Water was azure blue and very comfortable. I only bring this up because the beaches farther south tend to be very seaweed-ish and not very walkable. Lots of folks on the beach.

Pools: We were always able to find chairs despite the resort being mostly full. There are plenty of umbrellas and shaded areas. I like the shade and my wife prefers the sun and it was never an issue for us to get both at various pools. There is no swim up bar.

Fitness: My wife and I are in the mindset that a morning workout makes it a little easier to justify laying around eating and drinking all day. I realize this might be contrary for those who are on vacation but to each their own. The workout area in the resort was pretty nice with a combination of free weights and machines. There were treadmills, ellipticals and Greg Lemond spin cycles. My wife and I went for a run one morning and it was nice to follow the sidewalk for as long as you want to run. There are several resorts in a row as well as a shopping center a mile or so away so the whole area is bustling with locals and tourists. Lots of runners and cyclists. One note on cycling--i ride 2-3 days a week and would have really liked to ride down in Cancun. After searching the forums here i decided it was not a good idea in the interest of safety. After staying down there i saw a ton of cyclists both on the road (roadies) and more casual riders on the sidewalk. Yes the buses and cars drive fast on the road but there were tons of cyclists in the morning before it got too busy. I looked for a place that rented bikes and couldn't find one close by but there are tons of bike/jogging paths as you wind north. Next time i'll find a way to get a bike down there to do some more exploring.

Golf: I brought my clubs and my wife and I played one morning at Greg Norman's Playa Mujeres golf club which is about a 35m ride away from Secrets the Vine. Greens fees are complimentary for Secrets guests and you just have to pay for transportation to the course ($50 USD for 2 people r/t). If you want an earlier morning tee time you must pay a fee since the freebies are the afternoon (read: blazing hot) tee times. Even with the fee the course was fantastic and much cheaper than playing a closer course. I played Mayakoba on a previous trip and Playa Mujeres is built in the same vein...golf course surrounded by jungle. The course is tough but was in fantastic shape and not surprisingly we only saw a few other people. Beware of the crocodiles, snakes and lizards that call the course home.

Summary: We had a very good experience and would go back again. The only negatives were noise as others have pointed out. Our room was on the Hard Rock resort side of Secrets. Our first night we got in fairly late and we were continually woken up by a raging pool party at Hard Rock that lasted til about 12:30am. The next night was a piano bar set up by the pool at Secrets that fortunately only lasted til about 10p or so. Overall this was minor as other nights there were no issues. The hallways are loud as each hallway acts like a big echo chamber and each night we usually heard folks arriving in their room after a night on the town.

Again, we would go back again, the only difference is I would request a room on the opposite side of the Hard Rock.

Room Tip: If you want a quieter experience stay on the side opposite the Hard Rock resort and pools.

I just came back from this resort and was extremely impressed with the staff's hospitality and overall happiness. They work very hard and really aim to fulfill your every wish. Now with the Pro s and cons:

FOOD:
The resort has several restaurants, I was able to try them all, here they are listed in order of my favorites.
-Dragons, Asian fusion/Chinese, the apps are the best and their sushi was fantastic.
- Nebbiolo, Italian cuisine, great service and food was non-traditional, I recommend their seafood entrees. They offer outdoor seating for "casual" diners too.
-Olio, Mediterranean/Greek, all outdoor seating. Go when there's live music by a saxophonist our guitar player. The resort prefers to play ambient mellowed version of The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Nirvana otherwise. Their salads are wonderful.
-Bluewater Grill, Peruvian cuisine- all beef is Black Angus and cooked perfectly, there's outdoor seating for the casual diner too.
- Market Cafe, new age Mexican cuisine, (not the buffet) chairs can be uncomfortable, a mariachi band plays a few nights a week.
-Sea Salt Grill, Mediterranean grill, not too shabby, great for mid afternoon, their version of breakfast is the same as the market cafe, with a made to order omelet bar and buffet, just smaller selection. At lunch in front of the Grill a chef prepares a huge pan of Paella, you can just walk up a grab a plate.
-Barefoot Grill, not shirt or shoes required, located next to Sugar Reef bar, offers a small buffet with chips, salsa, typical Mexican lunch dishes and made to order grill for hamburgers and hot dogs with all the toppings.
- Half time Sports bar, American bar food, feels like you never left the states, they play all the games and take requests. There's even a pool table in back.

POOLS:
The resort offers 4 different pools, a jacuzzi and the most beautiful beach I have ever seen. Also no pool is deeper than 5-6 feet, and there is no topless sunbathing allowed. Frozen drinks tend to be on the weaker side so ask for a shot on the side or a (rum or tequila) "floater". Try a "Dirty Monkey" with a rum floater, it's made with fresh ripe bananas. Also at 1pm the chefs (about 30 of them) come out with a different assortment of bite size treats and wait on all the guests at the pools and beach.

-Infinity Pool, (preferred club members only). Quite and relaxing, smaller crowd and wider resin chairs. Gotta get up early to reserve your chair, but don't be surprised if its gone if you wait 4 hours to come back to it.
-Main (Barefoot) pool, located between Sea Salt Grill and Sugar Reef Cafe; nice big pool, next to the jacuzzi, my favorite because it gets the most sun through out the day and you can view the ocean from your chair.
-Manatee Bar's Pool, smaller infinity pool, great for a groups of couples to hang out, also a great view of the ocean, this pool I found tends to be warmer than the others. Around noon, there is water aerobics and Spanish lessons in the form of a fun game of Hangman happen here.
- Terrence Swimming pool, located below the outdoor lounge and the "Boardwalk". the most chairs available, late comers that want a lot of sun all day grab a chair in the water along the wall facing the Hard Rock. Only con, the waitstaff is sparse Mon-Wed, so service is not as fast here, and with your chair in the water, good luck keeping your kindle/iPod/bags dry.

We did the PREFERRED CLUB, which means bigger room (the TV is too far away from the bed, but the balcony view is better), the 21st floor's snack area (grab your early morning coffee here and avoid lines), and the Infinity pool (read above). Our check in was on the floor we stayed on and out luggage was brought up by the staff. We were given a glass of champagne and a mini tour all before we reached out floor.

SHOPPING:
We only traveled to two different ones, KULKUCAN PLAZA, which is very Americanized style mall; and to LA ISLA SHOPPING PLAZA, outdoor shops best viewed at night and had a few places to eat, like Planet Hollywood. It also has an Aquarium which I did not have the chance to experience since it closed at 5pm.

Just take the bus, its only a 10 min trip and almost everyone goes there. Warning the bus system seems like our American taxi system, they are all competing for fares and drive aggressively, often blocking each other. Just tell the bus driver where you are going and they will notify you of the stop. It's less than one American dollar per person per ride, but they only take pesos (8.50/pp). there are drugstores at these malls, so if you run out of sunscreen and the complementary 15 SPF isn't enough, buy it here, and all your little magnets and keychains for your friends.

ROOMS:
- Bed, very comfortable, our maid was fabulous! In fact the whole hotel is extremely clean and they work very, very hard to keep it that way. WARNING: Construction was still being done on the 27th and 28th floors and if you would like and afternoon siesta- better luck at the pool. Also a few "poltergeist" moments with lights flickering on and off while they wee working on the electrical.
-Not enough hooks to hand towels or wet bathing suits.
-Spacious shower, can probably fit people in there, only one small corner shelf for toiletries.
-Light switches, the BIGGEST PAIN IN THE BUTT, once you wake your partner at 2 am by turning on ALL the light by accident so you can see your way to the bathroom, you learn how to use their new combined touch switches fast.
-bath area needs more plugs instead of USB plugs.
-PLENTY of closet space, his and hers closets that light up with robes and slippers.
- vanity chair is very low, but light up mirror is a plus for applying make-up.
-we moved the chaise to next of the tv, better to hear it
-AMERICAN TV STATIONS are peppered with Spanish, HBO is dubbed in Spanish but TNT, and the WB is in English with Spanish subtitles and there's free Playboy channel.

Overall I enjoyed my stay, they are still trying work out some kinks and finish decorating, occasionally furniture is add or "relocated" to other area. Very relaxing and I would definitely recommend this place again.

Room Tip: Choose a room on the Hard rock side (even numbered rooms) if you are in the Perferred Club (floors 2...
