“Fantastic vacation ever!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 6, 2013

My husband and our 14 year old daughter stayed in the beach front, every night we got to see the pirate ship for the Captain Hook, and it was delight to see them. The beach was cool, no big waves, with crystal clear and pure white sands. Every night, we also would swim on the pool that changes color every seconds..their manicured lawn, and clean surroundings, all in all it was a great experienced for us, and we definitely coming back in 2 years.

Room Tip: Choose the beach front, you got to see a lot of things..

Me, my husband and 19 year old daughter just spent 7 nights at The Royal Cancun. It was a wonderful resort , beautiful beach weather, and we had a great time. Below is our opinion of the Resort.

PROs:

-BEAUTIFUL BEACH. We opted for the Royal primarily because it is at the top of the island, where the water is much calmer. No waves or undertow to deal with. Just a foot to 4 foot of clear water surrounded by enough reef for some novice snorkeling. This is not for people who want big waves, ocean swimming, etc. This is more like a quiet lagoon feel.
- BEAUTIFUL BEACH PART 2. Plenty of shade, nice chairs, not crowded at all. Sand felt like sugar.
We normally went down there around 3:00 PM and stayed until dark. Some nights we just ordered drinks and food and ate right there on the beach. Amazing.
- SUITE. We loved our 2 bedroom / 1 bath / ocean front suite. We were on the second floor. We enjoyed watching the pirate ship battles at night ( fake pirate ships, it's a show), we loved watching all the boats coming in and out of the harbor ( hotel is on a boat lane but we enjoyed that a lot) and lastly, what a better way to wake up than to walk out on your private bedroom deck and see the ocean.
- STAFF. I honestly don't think I could say enough about the staff. They were awesome. We arrived at 10:00 AM, knowing we could not check in until 4:00. By 12:00 they had us in our room. The front desk people were awesome in every way, bellhops, house keeping, even the grounds crew was nice. And everyone spoke enough English to communicate. ( though I always feel like if I am in their country, I should make an effort to speak their language, it's not their responsibility to speak mine)
- FOOD. The food was good. Fairly decent price for a resort, and we had pizza delivered one night which made our daughter very happy!
- Sports desk. Loved going to get our snorkels, towels, etc daily and everything was all clean and fresh.
- MARKET. They had a little store in the resort and that was really nice because the OXOX was a little bit of a long walk. It's a little pricey but well worth it.

CON's: Now we couldn't come up with any real cons BUT there were a few things that bothered us just a little. Definately not enough to stay away though.

- POOL BAR- There was a great little swim up, pool bar but every night when we tried to go there, kids were swimming all around the seats. There was a rope they were not suppose to go past but they did. So we never got a drink at the pool bar because who wants to have a cocktail with kids all in your face splashing water?
- RULES. Now this ended up not being a big deal, BUT the first night , when we read the resort book, there were so many RULES that we were afraid to do anything!!!! No coolers at pool, no glass bottles on beach, no towels on chairs in rooms, no this, no that. However, we quickly figured out these rules are for people who don't have enough common sense to be polite and respectful. Everyone had glass on the beach but they picked up behind themselves, didn't break things and put away their trash. People had coolers at the pool, but nobody got out of hand or too rowdy. All the guest were family oriented, nice, normal people. I think these rules are for spring breakers and people who just aren't respectful.

-$$$ Sometimes I felt like I was being nickel and dimed to death. Tipping all over the place, extra money to do crafts, extra to rent sail boats, just little stuff. It didn't add up to much but it seems like just putting those little things in the cost of your original booking would at least not seem like you were being prayed upon.

Bottom line. Wonderful place to stay in Cancun. All about the family. Loved it! We will go back. Soon!

Room Tip: Pay more and get the ocean front room!

Great facility, with our 2 bedroom 2 bath unit in great condition with a full kitchen. The maintenance and grounds staff do a great job. Service is excellent throughout from the front desk on. I have read that for some the maid service was not consistent, but my experience was very good. The pool is a great place to hang out and a great place for our kids, as our unit had a balcony with a view of the pool. I especially liked the onsite market, which keeps long hours and is very well stocked with everything you might need. The onsite car rental is also very convenient

On the “could be improved” aspects, I would mention the fact that the facility is about time share sales, and your dedicated concierge wants to get you to buy a time share. I declined to talk to them about that, but it can be a little annoying. The beach is also OK, but but not exceptional with a lot of see weed. The Wifi signal was very weak with lots of outages, so the facility definitely needs to make that much stronger in this world where each person has two different devices that need a signal. The onsite restaurant -- Pinaple – is not that good. The health club has a daily charge to use it, which was disappointing.

Special note. There is a hotel in Cancun called the “Royal Cancun hotel,” and the local taxi drivers have to be told and retold that you are going to the “Cancun Club International Royal Cancun,” and not just Royal Cancun. We were not that specific, and ended up in the other place – which is nicer looking.

The front desk and concierges are not well informed and were very nosey. Upon our day out into Cancun, they wanted to know EXACTLY where we went and even asked which shops we visited in the malls... That is getting too personal for my needs......

This is a timeshare hotel and all excursions are exclusively handled by Thomas Moore. We did not book through them as they were too expensive, and when we asked for information from the front desk managers about an excursion - the first question they asked was, “Did you book through Thomas Moore.” We said no and they proceed to tells us they had no information and hung up..... Customer service is lacking..

Do not accept the timeshare presentation at their newest hotel: The Royal Haciendas... We were told the whole presentation was going to be 90 minutes long including breakfast so we decided to take a look. We received absolutely no rewards for our time and the whole experience took over 5 and a half hours; after which we told them that we wanted to end the presentation…

During the presentation we were told that we could use the free shuttle to go to the neighboring town but when we told them we were not interested in buying the timeshare, they changed their tune and told us the shuttle was for paying members only.... So we took a cab to the town.....

This was our 4th visit to Cancun and by far the worst week we spent there... Never again will we spend our money at the Royal resorts....

What was originally called the Royal Club Internacional de Cancun is now called the Royal Cancun VCI to distinguish it from the newer high rise Royal Cancun 7 km further south on Kulkukan Blvd. It stands at km 4.5 on the boulevard and that is the easiest way to describe its location. All taxi and bus drivers understand this. It is a low rise condo resort with the tallest buildings only 3 stories. We were eight people, three couples, one of them with two children, 9 and 11. We booked three units in close proximity and were luckily assigned three units in a one story building right next to the large pool. The rates were near $140 USD per unit. Each with two bedrooms one bath and well equipped kitchen. They were well appointed, comfortable and clean. The Hotel offers a sports desk were various gear, including tennis rackets and balls, snorkeling equipment, ping pong paddles, boogie boards, etc. free of charge. In addition, residents had access to three other Royal properties on Kulkucan Blvd. that could be reached by a free shuttle operating at intervals about 8 times a day. Some of our group took advantage of 2 trips to Royal Sands some 5 km south which had a more challenging surf and beautiful multi-tiered pool that looked out to the sea. We breakfasted in the room but usually lunched out and had dinner twice at the nice "La Palapa" restaurant on site and once at "La Parilla" in central Cancun. The food was excellent at both but on certain nights La Parilla has a fine Mariachi band performing. All in all it was a banner week. The reception staff was both congenial and helpful. Special thanks to Raul who was a well spring of information. Daily Maid service was efficient and cheerful. Even the gardeners of the nicely landscaped grounds gave a hearty "Ola". There is a small market near the lobby for essentials, both edible and pharmaceutical, However, more serious shopping was better at Chedraui, Commercial Mexicana and Walmart all in central Cancun. If you want to pig out on fabulous pastries go to "La Creperia". Local bus service stops in front of the hotel. Each ride is 8½ pesos. Raul can tell you what number to take depending on where you want to go. Don't be afraid to ride the bus. It's cheap and fast. I mean "pronto" fast. The desk furnishes a rudimentary map that is sufficient. My younger son, the one with the children, is seriously looking at this as an alternative to Poipu where they spent their last two out of state vacations. The hotel is within walking distance of a terminal for the ferry to Islas Mujeres about a 20 minute ride. No cars allowed on the island but you can rent a golf cart holding four people for about $40 USD a day. Lot's of fun driving around the island. Don't miss the turtle farm. The North beach is a splendid broad expanse of white sand. A good lunch is available at "Buho's". Royal Cancun VCI is a winner.

Room Tip: Unless you're dying to have an ocean view there's no reason to be upstairs. The ground floo...
