Our Family of 3 stayed for a week this Thanksgiving. Late 70's low rise buildings. Tasteful Spanish style with lovely landscaping. Small army of workers keeping all in truly immaculate condition. Pleasant and helpful staff. Tennis, two pools one w/ swim up bar, Sun Fish sailboats, snorkel gear and bikes for loan. On-site travel agency, small market store, restaurant and pool area bar. 2 bedroom condo w/ Murphy Bed, TV w/ DVD, fully equipped galley kitchen, all nicely done.
Here are a couple of notes regarding this place. It is Not on the Lagoon as some previous reviewers have noted. It is at KM marker 4.5 on the top of the 7 that makes up the Cancun Peninsula. Because of it's location the sea area is very calm. No pounding surf and lots of sea grass. This is good or bad depending on your point of view. Also, it is not in the main hotel area. We were assigned a "Concierge" for our stay. He was pleasant and helpful but was persistent in soft selling the time share element. There is an activities director for younger kids. She keeps them busy with fun things. For people with young kids, this resort is very safe. I give this place a 5 star plus in the young kids department. Teens? Not so much. I debated the star rating of the hotel because of mostly the location, and then the time share thingy. While not having Planet Hollywood or some other gawd awful venue nearby is a bonus for me. Being walking distance to shops, sights and restaurants is really nice. There is really nothing in reasonable walking distance from the hotel. Buses and cabs are easily caught from the property. The sales pitch got really old after awhile. Again not a hard sell, put borderline pesky. Overall, a quiet and very nice place that is extremely well maintained. There are folks I met who come year after year, with good reason. A solid choice keeping location in mind.

We traveled in a group last May. I was poking around tripadvisor and decided to write my first review. This was the best vacation I have ever experienced. This resort was a large part of it. This staff worked so hard and kept this resort absolutely spottless. Gloria helped us so much!!! we were very impressed with the overall stay and quality of The Royal Cancun. The front desk was awesome, they have a towel service and a swim up bar. I couldnt have asked for a better time.

Room Tip: 1st floor room with patio by the pool was awesome!

We just returned yesterday from a week-long stay at The Royal Cancun. We were traveling with our children (2, 5, and 6) and it was a wonderful location and the staff were amazing. We exchanged through Interval and ended up getting a beachfront B villa which worked perfectly for us. We were in B1013 and were just steps away from the beach. Kids were able to play in the sand right in front of our villa and we were able to go back and forth and always have them in sight.

We ended up eating most of our lunches on the beach and dinners at the restaurant. The staff was wonderful and so great with the kids. Patricia (beach server) went above and beyond and even brought plastic glasses for us (her idea) to use in our villa for our 2 year old. We also had a few cooler days and both Sharon and Patricia took care of us for happy hour including bringing chips and a few beverages right to our patio so we could still enjoy sitting outside and enjoying the view. I really can't say enough about the service both on the beach and the restaurant and the food was great as well.

We did the Dolphin Discovery on Isle Mujeres. It was a great program but a few warnings for those with little ones. We had a windy day so it was wavy. None of the kids could stand on the platform and they had to be held. I was expecting our 6 year old to be fine. So we were holding all three kids (who were all cold - just bad luck on the day) and really our 2 year old and even the 5 year old were too young to really enjoy it. Our daughter LOVED it though and it was a highlight of the trip for her. We took a taxi downtown Isle Mujeres afterwards and had lunch at one of the local restaurants and walked around a bit which was fun. Very charming.

This is a quieter resort which was perfect for us. We don't really go for the loud music/dance party type of places anymore. The only noise really was from the pirate cruise that went by in the evening. I would highly recommend it for families or adults that just want to enjoy the beautiful views and relax. The other comment I would make is that the other guests really were wonderful. We travel a lot and when you show up with 3 young kids, you typically get a few looks regardless of how good they are. Everyone was so nice and very sweet with them. We were told over and over how blessed we are and who doesn't like hearing that!

We have visited this particular resort for many years. It is one of the oldest resorts in Cancun - to me this is very good thing. There are only 4 stories (some buildings have less) to the resort and it covers a lot of land horizontally (versus the new resorts that are 50 floors up and approx. 100 yds wide). It's a fantastic lay out. The resort is white buildings, arched doorways, tiled floors, lush grounds all around - you enter your villa from the open air instead of a hallway. Wonderful. We have a top villa (1,400 sf) that is ocean front. It doesn't get any better than that. There are two balconies - one off the upstairs master suite and one off the main living area. There is a main bedroom with two double beds and a murphy bed in the living area. The staff are friendly, accommodating, and knowledgeable. Our 9 year old son has a blast here - even though the kids activities are sparse. He loves the pool and beach - so, lack of lots of kids (it's not really "family" oriented) and lack of "cool" kid activities doesn't really bother him. Royal Cancun is part of the Royal Resorts family - so, there are other Royal properties that are rated higher for families. I imagine in a year or two - I will feel comfortable sending him on a Royal bus to the Sands if he wants to do other activities. In the meantime, this is the place for all of us. Many of the original owners of this property still own - with good reason. But this means that the population is ready to relax with their time - more than "party". If that is what you are looking for - this is it. The palapa has a great breakfast buffet from 7-11 at a reasonable price. The dinners are plentiful and have a nice variety of options. Again, you can always take the Royal shuttle and try out any number of Royal restaurants at the other properties. We had a recommendation from another guest for laconda paolo (spelling?). It's an italian restaurant a few miles from the resort. It was fantastic food and a great value. You can hop on a local bus for only 10 pesos and go anywhere up and down Cancun. Don't waste your time and money on a taxi or shuttle to get around cancun. Use the bus. To get back to the resort - all the staff are very friendly and will take time with you - to give you tips, chat, whatever. The only staff I really don't see a purpose for are the concierge!?!? You get a personal concierge - but I really don't know what they do. Whenever I have asked mine a question - doesn't seem to have any good answers. Also - they don't have suggestions (shouldn't they know more than I about Cancun?) or ask what you are interested in doing. Other than that - other other staff have all kinds of opinions about trips, restaurants, etc. Ask them. We wouldn't stay anywhere else.

We have just returned from a family holiday at the Royal Cancun .We rented the 2 bedroom "B" villa, which sleeps 5 .The resort was very pleasant, staff was more than friendly ,greeting us with "holas" whenever we walked about. The resort store was very handy and we bought a lot of our food stuffs and drinks there. It was very convenient having the store so close and the prices were comparable to most prices at stores around the area.We found no need to visit Walmart to buy groceries, although if we ate in the suite daily, Walmart may have saved us some extra money.
The resort was kept in immaculate condition, We used most of the facilities from the tennis courts to the sailboats, and always the staff greeted us with the warmest of greetings.Even our 30 year old sons and daughter in laws enjoyed the laid back ambience of the resort over the larger busier and noisier resorts along the hotel strip This was our second stay at the Royal Resorts, having stayed at the Royal Mayan last year, and we definitely enjoyed the quieter, quainter accomodations at the Royal Cancun this time around. Our next stay will be at the Royal Haciendas in Playa Del Carmen, the newest resort of the group, and in an area that we haven't spent much vacation time.We can't wait to return!

Room Tip: Check the resort map for a room choice. We had a nice room overlooking the turtle pond with views of...

Beware that they will place a $500-$800 hold on your credit/debit card. This allows you to charge food, drinks, and activities to your room. The room location sucked, we had a view of the parking lot. Try and get beachside. The restaurant was only okay and had a limited menu. Hotel staff were friendly and efficient. Our children were maybe 3 of the 5 thee, but the childrens activity lady was great! Its a little far from anything going on, we had to take a taxi everywhere. And definitely take the Xel-Ha tour great snorkeling, shows, food, and drinks for 1 great price.
