I have stayed at other Riu before and this was a really good one.

Stayed Thursday Noon till Sunday Afternoon. Took a airport shuttle roundtrip for 2 people ($50 total cost). The hotel is in the hotel zone and along great tourist area.

Hotel: All inclusive of course, Clean and new and modern style. Does have 4-5 theme resturants area that require reservation in advance. Try to do once you check in since it can be rsvp 2 days in advance to beat the others. Smaller area so books up quickly. THe open buffet areas for lunch/breakfast are geared towards american/hispanic/european meals. Simple food and ok. Themed resturants are Japense, FUsion, Italian, Steak and Mexican. There is a VIP one that is only for the VIP suites. Ate at a couple of them and they were ok, bland but edible.

Transportation: Shuttle recommended from airport to hotel. Taxi are expensive. We used the busing system which is along the enitre hotel zone. Frequent buses every 2-3 minutes. It is 9.5 pesos (recommend peso) instead of dollars (1 dollar = 13 pesos at this time of review). The bus drivers were great, we just told them them were we were going and they would announce it or try to let us know to get off at a specific bus stop when arrived. There is one bus stop in fron of the hotel if you are coming from downtown. If coming from the other side, the bus stop is before and after but the walk is quick. Under 5 minutes and safe

Area: Safe to walk if needed, There is a flea shopping area near, and also 3-4 shopping area in the hotel zone

Beach: Clean and great. No seaweed in the water, no shells in the water, no debri, clear if waves are not bad. Beach side had palm trees, and chairs etc. Clean area and safe. There are some rocks /coral that does have fish swimming in it. Snorkeling/body boards/fins are aviable at this hotel. THere is another RIU next door that offers the parasailing/kayaking and other things

Activites: There are acitivtes on the board that list things. Aquafit, volleyball, bingo, table tennis, water sports, yoga etc. There is a painting classes that is free but you MUST buy the canvas which is around $5 and up depending on size

Staff: AMAZING and attentive and kind. Great and quick

Room: Was on the 6th floor Junior Swuite, 1 king bed with a pull out sofa if needed. There was a jacuzzi in the room as well. THe toilet was in separate area. The shower was large and spacious. Two double sinkgs. Typical tv/safe/closet/drawers/tables/chairs/coffee table/ cofee maker, hair dryer/iron/iron board. 5 bottle liquor dispensers. Mini fridge had water bottles, sprite, pepsi, dos equis cans. 24 hrs room service as well. Patio had two chairs and tables. Neihboring rooms are seperated by a wall that is not from floor to ceiling. It is maybe around 7-8 feet and open at top which someone could stand on the chair/table and jump over if needed. Rooms power outlets are turned off if no card is left in the wall/card slot to activate the power

The nightly shows start around 9 and will end by 11 pm. If you have a room near the stage, you will hear it. We had room 634 and we were able to hear it but didnt bother us, but be aware.

Pools: Various pools that were kept clean and warm and plenty around.

Environment: Clean, landscape was kept in really organized and cleaned/trim manner. Pathways were maintained well and kept clean. No eye sores at all.

Wifi: Free wifi in rooms and lobby and it worked really well all over the resort. Beach to rooms to resturants. Only needed to sign in one or twice and the smart phone remememered it. Each room gets own username/password. Good speed and connection. Helps with wifi for emails and apps for texting/data texting for travelers

All Inclusive: Everyone got bracelets to wear that you can visit other RIU hotels and use some of their services

Spa/Gym: DId not visit or use

Shows: Did not attend

Cleanliness: The hotel at this time is around 2-3 years old. Grounds are good, the rooms are in decent shape, pretty good. Some stains on fabric items/pillow/layers that arent use to lay on. The floors are open to the weather outside via windows that line the hallway. Some portions of the door frame sheetrock as worn down or crumbling but doesnt affect the stay

Room Tip: Ask to be away from the stage side if you want quiet before 11pm.

My wife and I have now been to Cancun well over 50 times and this is one of the top 5 properties we've stayed at in the entire area. We've stayed at all but one or two of the top 15 resorts in Cancun and many of the top rated resorts on the Riviera Maya and Cozumel. The food, service, staff, rooms, grounds, facilities etc were all excellent. The only thing I would caution people about is that there are a lot of children in the family area of the resort. This normally would cause us not to stay at a resort, but with the adult only area we decided to give it a try. We're glad we did and if you go without children I would strongly recommend the adult only area.

Room Tip: Adult only section

Just returned from our second vacation at the RIU Peninsula in Cancun, Mexico. Stayed last year and got a free upgrade to the Adults Only suites so thought I would try it again this year. No luck. With the Easter holiday I paid an additional $469 to upgrade to the adults only this year. Definitely worth it. Our room was spotless every day and we enjoyed our server Fernando during the day with beverages, fruit kabobs and sandwiches served poolside. They even delivered ice cream treats this year! We ate at the steakhouse, Isla Mujeres twice during our 10 day stay. Enrique, the maitre d of the restaurant is a wonderful attentive man who takes very good care of his patrons. We enjoyed excellent food and service. The Italian restaurant was a nice surprise this time. The vegetable lasagna was awesome. Beautiful atmosphere and more attentive staffing. The buffet had so many great options. Sushi night was impressive! The beach had some nice additions, including a boardwalk and some much needed sandbags/breaks along the beach. The addition of more sand has created a nicer, deeper beach and a much "easier on the feet" entry into the water.

We have just come back from the Riu Palace Peninsula, and we already want to go back! We travelled as a party of 10 - ranging from 18 months to 65 years, and it catered for all!

We travelled from Manchester on the Thompsons Dream liner, which was brilliant with the many films it didn't seem like 9 hours at all.

On arrival this Hotel was amazing, great check-in. We were on the 15th floor and the view was like a post card, turquoise sea & white beaches to both sides.

The rooms are massive with a Jacuzzi bath in the middle, great shower too and separate loo! The maids did an excellent job, even making towel animals and leaving chocolates on the bed. You also get a fridge, free wi-fi, safe, hairdryer, coffee maker and optic's re-stocked daily.

There are plenty of pools to choose from (the swim up bar one seems to be the warmest), free towels, plenty of sun beds. The beach is just a minute away, with warm sea to swim in and iguanas to feed on the rocks!

The food is fantastic, plenty of choice for all. We ate in the main restaurant every night but there are others to choose from. And the cappuccino coffee bar was a must - we went at 4pm everyday for a cupa and chocolate dipped strawberries!

Out and about, there is plenty to do. From the front of the hotel get on a bus (less than £1) and head right to Las Americas great for shopping and head left to the 'Plaza' for more great shops with little bridges over rivers. This is where we swam with Dolphins which was not cheap - but worth every penny. I think it was about £85 each for the full hour, which included looking round the animals too in the marine centre. We booked this with the RIU guy in a little hut near the hammocks in our hotel. We also got on a boat (just left of our hotel front door on the beach) for a day trip to Isle of Marunjes - which is well worth a visit. We hired golf buggies (great fun!) travelled round the island and found a turtle farm where we held baby turtles! My nephew also went on the 'Captain Hook' boat trip which he loved. It was expensive (for adults) but he got a sword, face paints etc a meal for all and watched the battle of sailors jumping from one boat to another, kids under 12 are free.

A few other points - the entertainment was ok, not a great deal in the day time (bingo, volley ball etc), on a night - magic show, karaoke, beach party, many nights it was their own Riu team which were very good. The staff were great (we tipped a little each night/lunch, which gave us a great service - but they deserved it!) the hotel was so clean, everywhere you looked there were people cleaning! We took pesos but maybe should have taken dollars, as everything seemed to be in dollars. And remember to keep about £40 each back, to get out of the Country with! The weather was glorious, about 80 - 90 degrees everyday with a strong wind to cool you down!

I think that’s about it apart from saying that this is one of the best holidays we have ever been on and the best hotel we have ever stayed in - we definitely plan to return soon!

Room Tip: we had a free upgrade (don't know how!) to rooms 1514,1515 and 1516 which had amazing views and...

I went on a family vacation and stayed for a week at the Riu. This was my first experience with an all-inclusive resort and I was in love. As a family, whenever we travel anywhere else I always cringe at how much money we spend on food, drinks, and other expenses. It was lovely going down to breakfast or grabbing drinks by the pool and not spending a dime (other than on tips). I felt very spoiled!
The room was always clean, in fact the housekeeping staff seemed overly eager to clean even when I had the do-not-disturb sign on the door! Everything was stocked daily and fresh towels were left as needed. The only thing I didn't like was the bed... it was pretty firm and I am just used to a soft bed at home.
The entertainment staff were a blast, and there was always something fun to do/see around the pool. Omar and company kept us very entertained.
The staff in the lobby and restaurants were just wonderful. Never met a frown while we were there and everyone was so anxious to make sure they took care of us 100%. I would go back in a heartbeat!
The balcony views are exceptional and the beach is right there just steps from the pool. The hotel itself is close to other attractions including the boat trips to Isla Mujeres, Captain Hook, and a quick drive down to the rest of the hotel zone.

Room Tip: The balcony views are amazing on either side (ocean on one and lagoon on the other).
