“Nice Large Resort”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

This is a large resort that adjoins the Marriott Casa Magna...we stayed here for two nights at the end of a lengthy stay in Akumal. The hotel is a nice, high-end resort and the service is great, but the food and activities are, expectedly, quite expensive. The Casa Magna has several more casual restaurants to choose from and they were quite good. They also had a few more children's activities than the JW, but that wasn't a big deal. Our boys (age 7 and 10) had a great time swimming in the enormous pool and playing on a boogie board in the ocean. They have a great span of beach in front of the hotel. I woudl probably prefer to stay somewhere a bit less Americanized if I was staying for longer but this hotel is great for those that want a typically American hotel nice hotel on a pretty beach. I would stay here again becuase it is one of the nicest non all-inclusive resorts in Cancun.

We spent four nights at the resort during a part business, part leisure trip. I'm not a big fan of beach resorts -- I'm more of a city guy -- but the JW Marriott experience went a long way to converting me. There is a refined, mature luxury at the JW. The acres of marble and heavy carpeting within the hotel must help to set you in the mood to enjoy yourself. Even more so, the pool and beach front areas are blissful.
With most large hotels, the location of the elevators at the JW are a bit exasperating because they are so far away from the check-in front lobby. But that is a minor quibble. Once inside the room, all is forgiven. The large bathroom is wonderful with double sinks, separate toilet, shower stall and separate bathtub. (The bath tub is not a deep soaking tub unfortunately.) Large closets with major space for the hoarders line the hallway. The true king size bed is comfortable. I thought the pillows could have been bigger and more plush but they were adequate. The view onto the azure ocean was dream-like. The terrace was of decent size for 2 adults though not terrifically expansive. We had no issues with noise from the adjoining rooms or from the hallway. I suspect this had a lot to do with us being at the property in low season. (The resort next door to the JW is the Hard Rock Hotel and it had its grand opening. There was loud music both nights that we heard a bit too clearly in our room. We didn't mind too much. In the future, any light sleepers might want to ask for a room that faces away from the Hard Rock.)
Service of course was nearly impeccable everywhere. One night we had to turn away two chambermaids who wanted to offer turn down service. We tried to tip generously during our stay. The breakfast buffet at the Sedona Grill was expensive at nearly $30USD per person but the quality of the food was excellent. We also had dinner at Gustino, the Italian restaurant within the hotel and it was fairly good.

We traveled during a non-busy season. The staff at the JW Marriott was fantastic. They were very attentive and helpful. However the food is overpriced. The bed was terrible. Even the kids complained about the mattress. We had one replaced during our visit and it was not an improvement. The lounge chairs at both the beach and the pool need to be updated. They were extremely uncomfortable. The room was also either very cold or extremely humid. There was not an imbetween.
This hotel is not in a great location if you don't want to get taxis. The bus is easy to catch. There is a McDonald's within a 15 min walk as well as OXXO and 7-11. There are two seafood restaurants across the street.

We went next door to the Casa Magna Marriott for happy hour three times. Great drinks there. Why doesn't the JW have this?
I would not go back to the JW Marriott unless they renovated and updated the hotel.

The hotel lobby was beautiful. Floral displays were enormous. We stayed for a week on the concierge floor. We had breakfast, lunch, appetizers & cocktails every night. It was great! I would definitely say it was worth it. Guest with "young" children seemed to have mixed feelings which I believe had more to do with their children's behavior in the concierge lounge. David was our favorite waiter. I wish I could have put him in my pocket to take home! All the ladies were very pleasant. The food was varied by culture, recipes, very few repeats!

Our room faced north. Rooms were not over-sized but definitely big enough for my husband and I. The beach was beautiful. No sign of sea lice. Plenty of lounge chairs @ both beach and pool. Waiters were plentiful and pleasant. We sat on both sides, family and adult. Drinks were great. We ate lunch @ poolside restaurant one day. It was very good. Our last night we ate at Gustino. It was very upscale both in decor and meals. Our meal was delicious and artistically creative!

Our favorite day trips were Tulum, Chichen Itza, and Playa del Carmen. Although Chichen gets all the hype, nothing beats the view of the ocean at Tulum. And as everyone knows, "Tulum, tulum" is the pink panther's favorite Mayan ruin. We ate at a restaurant right on the beach in Playa del Carmen and watched young men play soccer on the beach. The carnitas were delicious and the beer ice cold! My favorite local brew was Tecate.

We rented a car and had no problems with travel. Military was evident on highway to Tulum, but that should be reassuring not scary. good deals on silver @ airport. Vendors @ Itza were somewhat aggressive but souvenirs are so unique. In Playa del Carmen the shopping near the beach was much better than Cancun. The vendors selling fresh fruit were amazing and delicious!

We stopped at Valladolid on the way back. This is an "under-hyped" gem! Around the main park, we found a walk-up shoe store that had beautiful sandals. The sidewalk by the "bibliotecia" (sp?) was beautiful. We also at lunch at Taberna de los Frailes. It was our best meal. Unbelieveable nachos & ceviche! Tuna & shrimp were also wonderful.

In Cancun we also had very good meals @ Savio's Bistro by La Dolce Vita, Captain's Cove & Fred's House & Seafood Market. Savio's was the best of those including the waterside table complete with alligator! Gustino's was the best food but much more expensive. Places I would not eat again were Labna (service & food was so-so) & El Fish Fritanga (I am not a "huge" fish person- fish tacos were okay). Although El Fish was the cheapest meal and lagoon view was great. They also had a very nice valet that helped you park.

There were two malls right on the Cancun beach strip we visited. The lagoon one was nicer because you could walk outdoors. Playa del Carmen shopping was better in my opinion.

One problem at hotel. Hotel was great except for when the "lost" our car for about an hour. Something was "really" funky about that. I think a worker had it, but we got it back. Valet were great except for that instance.

Overall, we had a wonderful trip.

In Cancun on hotel row, you pass one after another large resort but the JW Marriott is very appealing from the curb. We did not experience any of the noise issues other reviewers complained about. We were there with a large group (200) for a series of parties so maybe our noise was drowning out the offending noise! But we had a most enjoyable time and would stay again.

We are on night 2 of a 4 night stay. Rooms, food and staff are wonderful. We did the club 91 upgrade and is well worth the cost. Big issue for us has been the LOUD music and strobe lights right next door at the Hard Rock Hotel which are expected to run for the lenght of our stay. Just beware to anyone traveling with kids. Even with the doors of the room closed you can feel the base and see the lights from the show scanning the hotel room as you try to sleep. It has ruined our experience regardless of the great staff, food and service. Our kids have not slept well with the thumping and hotel room light show which has led to crabby days.

Suggestion: check the concert schedule for the Hard Rock BEFORE you book. If you are looking for a relaxing vacation or have kids who need their sleep and there are concerts booked, do not stay at this hotel.

The neighbor hotel had its opening event last week; that was the reason of the lights and the music. From conversations with their directives we learned this will not be an ongoing situation. We will keep monitoring this and any other close by events to prevent them from disturbing ours guest during their stay.

The hotel, the grounds, the pools and the beach were all beautiful !! The people were more then friendly and very accommodating. Our room service Surf & Turf was as good as any restaurant I've eaten in. The rooms were comfortable and the prices were reasonable. This is a great place to spend your vacation so don't listen to anybody that says this hotel is "Horrible". There is the most beautiful indoor heated pool on the 4th floor and a 20 x 20 spa right next to it and we were the only one's using either. How much nicer do you want it ???

Room Tip: Main pool view is the best !!
