I looked for about a month for a reasonable accommodation in Cancun. My husband and I had the perfect vacation staying in Michelle's condo. The beach was beautiful. The pools were well maintained and clean and we enjoyed the atmosphere....a combination of local families and retired folks from a variety of places. I am rating the accommodation excellent as it was the best value. During our stay, Michelle invited us to the "Shell House" for her Birthday Party and it was a one of a kind experience. The property according to Peter, is rated in the top 40 for most unique homes in the world for rent and it was spectacular. The shell motif is everywhere in this home. A true piece of art and fun to explore! I will always remember this special trip! Hasta Luego!

It was so nice to get to our suite after a long flight and have a cold 6pack of beer waiting for us in the fridge. Thanks Michelle and Peter! Suite 1702 at the Solymar is a small second floor studio apartment with a view of the lagoon as well as the beach from the balcony,(depends on which way you sit) and a view of the beach from the kitchen window. It is a small place with a king size bed, tiny kitchen, and good sized bathroom with lovely shower. When we got there, there were no man sized bowls in the kitchen, and no mixing bowl, thus it was difficult to mix up a salad, or eat cereal at breakfast. Michelle took care of that. Also, only one burner on the cook top worked, and Michelle took care of that as well. There was no wifi in our room, we had to go to the lobby or by the pool to get "mexican wifi"; but Michelle took care of that as well by placing a wireless router right in our room: 5 bars!!!
We like to cook and eat in, and as such, a bigger kitchen and a bit more room would have been nice. The bed takes up most of the room in the suite and there is no room for a loveseat or chairs. Don't get me wrong, the king bed is very nice, but having to use it as a seating area during the day was less than nice. But it's a studio after all, not a one bedroom apt.
If you are the type to cook your own meals, then bring your spices and condiments. If you are not, there are some really good restaurants a bus ride away, and there are 3 within walking distance. If you walk south towards the airport, there is a lovely quaint palapa style restaurant on the lagoon side that offers only fish dishes and accepts only cash, and is a family run business, but the food is great, extremely reasonable, serves beer, and has a million dollar view, especially at sunset. Just south of that is El Capitan, they take credit cards, and are quite a bit more elegant, but again the food is great. And a few more steps is a great burger place.
The Solymar is an all inclusive place and has a restaurant. You can buy meals, and we did look, but weren't impressed, so didn't partake. You can also buy beer etc. at the bar (25pesos/beer). We brought large 24oz. mugs with us and they filled them with beer for 25 pesos each.
All in all we had a great 3 weeks in Cancun. This is the second time we have been in Cancun, the first was some 30 years ago, and man have things changed. Michelle and Peter are great hosts and made our stay very comfortable.
Now, all this was written from the perspective of a couple of senior citizens, so if you are young and want action, stay farther north (towards cancun). If you want luxury,-4 and 5 star hotels, stay farther north, but if you want inexpensive clean comfortable, quiet, stay here.

Room Tip: Talk to Michelle, tell her what you want, she may have it.

Thank you so much for your review of your three week stay here. Just a quick note to say that 1702 is actually on the 5th and highest floor as it in fact has a rooftop terrace . Smaller than the average ocean view , at $65 a night the price is reflective. Thank you for all the lovely comments we are happy to be able to provide such service to you at any time being full time residents of Solymar year round :)

I arranged via email, a last minute 8 day stay, in Cancun, And the best part of the trip, was finding a condo rental with Michelle, she was delightful to correspond with, so helpful and professional, not only finding me a excellent rental, but taking the time to getting to know me a bit, and was caring enough to inviting me to her birthday party on Isla Mujeres, the same day I arrived. She was away, so she arranged her private driver to meet me at the airport, Betty, who drove me directly to the resort, and within a hour, I was in my room, changed, and off for a memorable day, going downtown, taking a ferry across to Isla Mujeres, and a taxi directly to the party, her directions she gave me were excellent. And 2 hours later, I Ended up at the Shell House, Casa Caracol, for a fun BBQ, and cocktails. What a great day, Met some new friends, and came back on the last ferry, with 5 other people who attended the party. What fun we had! The condo was in excellent condition, as advertised, the beach was beautiful, it was 30c and sun all 8 days. I Went to Costco in downtown Cancun, the next day, and got all my supplies, spent $180.00 For the week, on grocerys, and drinks. And it was like I lived there for the next week, the Condo had a full kitchen with fridge and all cooking supplies, You Cook and Head to the beach, I took a small cooler to the beach every day. The people were friendly, I Went out to the clubs a couple times at night, without issue, And The best part was, I didn't have to call Michelle once for anything, the room was perfect, nothing was needed or missing, right down to the safe key, my door key on a necklace, all was thought of and looked after before I arrived. You Just arrive and enjoy. You are the Best Michelle! ( & Peter,) who keeps a low profile, u see him swimming once in a while, but he works just as hard. I will be back as one of Michelle's regulars! thank you Michelle! :-)

In an area dominated by big resort places Michelle's Condos offer a much-needed alternative for the more independent minded travellers. We had a very good time here.

Michelle responded promptly to all our emails and booking with her was a breeze. She greeted us on arrival at Solymar and we were grateful for the warm welcome, the orientation, and the much-needed cold drinks.

Solymar is essentially a big apartment block directly on the beach, with a large pool and an on-site restaurant. This restaurant is not recommended by Michelle and the wafts of old cooking fat sometimes emitting from it did not incite us to test it for ourselves. There are plenty of great restaurants nearby, in a variety of budgets and catering to most tastes. Michelle gave us some great pointers to get us started, and we discovered some others.

The location of condos within the block is crucial to your experience, and #2410 is ideal: far enough up and off the main corridor to be un-bothered by noise, and facing due east with a lovely view of the ocean. There is a balcony large enough for 4 people to have breakfast on and soak up the morning sun. Lower floor units can have problems with noise and privacy (with some you literally share your breakfast table with the pool community if you eat outside) and there is always a fair deal of running about and activity on the corridors, so we'd advise to ask about these things before booking. However Michelle's unit 2410 is great, and I'd recommend booking with her well in advance and ask for this unit specifically.

The condo itself is spacious, clean and comfortable. It's a single-room layout with 2 double beds and integrated kitchen. There is a large fridge/freezer, a 2-ring hob and best of all, a water fountain. We thought this a great feature as it greatly reduces the need for plastic bottles. Tap water is not safe to drink. For those who want it there is also a TV and DVD, useful for looking at photo CDs from diving trips.

Even though there is no outside noise, if you're a light sleeper be sure to bring earplugs - you're sleeping practically in the same room as the fridge and when that thing fires up at night it you'll know about it. The aircon, should you need it at night, is even noisier.

If you're here for the diving, either rent all your gear or make arrangements with the operator of your choice to wash & store your wet gear at the dive shop. Condo's are by nature not diver friendly.

As recommended we did book Betty for the transfer from the airport - we can't fault the service but felt that USD 65.- is way overpriced for the 20-min ride for 3 people. Turns out the official taxi rate is 300.- pesos, approximately USD 20.- Note that the attractions in the area can very easily be visited independently - Chichen Itza, Valladolid, Tulum, Playa del Carmen and many more can conveniently reached by hire car or public bus.

Contrary to fears expressed in some reviews we found Police in Yucatan (both federal and Municipal) to be courteous and helpful (at least to us tourists). If you rent a car be sure to ask for a "tourist card" - ít's a kind of voucher that has 2 tickets which will be removed by police if you are stopped for minor traffic infrictions. Upon the third offence (or if you're caught with a major offence, like drink driving) the card will be taken from you and a fine is payable at the hire car agency on return. This system protects you from having to spend extended periods of time at a police station for minor errors, and is effective to reduce corruption.

We can recommend Michelle, and in particular condo 2410, and would definately book again. At USD 95.- per night it also is very good value for the area, especially if travelling with family.

Room Tip: 2410 is ideal

We are so grateful for your review and appreciate that we are continually rewarded by you all for making sure we have the best rooms & service :) I too am a light sleeper who needs total silence while others need the " white noise" of a fan or fridge humming but as this room has been a favorite of all our repeaters we will see if anything needs to be changed by following up with each and EVERY guest that is a promise. We have 12 beautiful ocean views to offer but yours is a favorite as it is very new.
Regarding airport transportation :

Hotel zone to the airport is $25usd or 300 pesos.(250 with Betty)
Arriving is another story.
A shared shuttle is $16 each ($48 usd for three)
A taxi is $52usd (or 600 pesos) and CANNOT fit three + luggage + scuba gear.
We are sorry for the mix up of information you received but we do not want future guests trying to find a way to get three people here for $20usd.
Thank you so much for taking the time to keep us being a favorite ~ we appreciate you ! Michelle and Peter (full time in Canćun)

I used the pickup service recommended by Michelle, thank you for that! The ride from the airport was stress free! And thank you for the extras you offered us! Much appreciated =] Michelle took the time out of her busy day to meet us in person, which was a very nice touch! She also sat explained to us where everything was in relation to our condo and how to get there, which was helpful as we were first timers! The room was as described, right on the beach (which was gorgeous and not crowded)! The condo is located very close to a massage tent on the beach, bonus! The bus stops right outside so you are minutes away from all the restaurants, bars, shopping etc (bus costs less than $1 each way!). We were worried that the beds may be too small to sleep two people (they look small in the pics) but they were plenty big! Everything in the room worked properly, we didn't use A/C often but when we did, it worked great!!! The best way to sum up Michelle as a host: she'll go out of her way to make sure you are comfortable and happy. Thank you Michelle!!!!
