Bought tickets for the crossing to Isla Mujeres from the dock at Playa Caracol, as this was nearest to where we were staying. The cost within the hotel zone is $17 return. If you get the bus to Puerto Juarez outside the zone the fare is almost half the price. We went across to the island on the 10:10 crossing. Using this crossing means travelling via El Embarcadero and picking up more passengers. In total it took around 40-45 minutes. Being first on meant we got seats on the upper deck. It really fills up at El Embarcadero. Staff will come around selling golf cart rental on the island. I had researched some before travelling and was going to hire when we got there, but the guys on the boat used Gomar and the rate was $40 for the day which was agreeable, so we booked en-route. We were serenaded Mexican style during the short crossing and of course soon after a tips bottle is thrust under your nose, but we did tip as he was quite funny and it does add a little something to the experience. The return journey was much the same as the outward journey (same boat). They use a fairly small ferry on the Playa Caracol route. There are much larger and more sleek ferries on the Puerto Juarez route. I think it was good value for money overall and I would reccommend them to any wishing to visit Isla on their holiday.
