The resort is wonderful. Staff is outstanding. Just as it always has been. Pools and Beach are excellent. We have been members for some time now and have been coming here even longer. Most everything is a great as it has always been but the food has gone downhill a little. The best food night is Wednesday for the Italian night. It is by far the best night of the week - but the buffet food was cold. The new point system and all-inclusive changes at the other Royal Resorts are not a favorite among members.

Room Tip: all the rooms a excellent and of the same design. Really the only differences are the view. It is e...

Staff was friendly and helpful. Not much of a bargain. Kitchen was very small for a none inclusive place. Pool was very clean and location is great. Beach was clean and well maintained. Food to cook was available but costly.

Room Tip: All rooms were good.

The quality of the resort is excellent! The resort is set up so you have a beautiful view for all of the large balconies. The rooms are immaculate clean. The staff is superb. Always there to make your stay a true pleasure.

We went as a timeshare exchange with Interval International and are very disappointed that they are switching to RCI. The beach is awesome.

Room Tip: Be prepared to walk. If you like the beach you want the building closest to the beach. The 4th floor...

This resort is old and not well maintained. Apparently, their lease is up in a few years so quality and up grading is out of the question. The only thing they want is to push their new time share property. The front desk is rude and not overly helpful. The personal person they assign to you for reservations and problems is just a way to get you to go to the the timeshare presentation. The resort is dirty especially the room. They would like you to tip the maids even if they don't clean well. We complained that our dish washer didn't work and they checked it and told us they would get it fixed. We left 7 days later and it didn't ever get fixed, the front desk just told us it takes time. When we ask to change rooms they told us they didn't have any available. They add a resort fee mandatory which tips the gardeners and others that maintain the property. I stayed at the Royal Mayan a few years ago which was very nice. This resort is far below those standards. They charge outrageous prices for the Internet and gym fees I would not stay here again.

This was our first visit to Cancun and the Royal Caribbean. We were here with two other couples and one of them stayed at the Royal Islander. The room amenities were very nice and comfortable and the daily maid service was appreciated since your towels don't dry overnight with the humidity in the air. The kitchen was a bit dated and certainly very small so we did not do much cooking other than breakfast. There was a pretty full market on the property for buying food and essentials other than meat. The property restaurant was excellent and had a wide range of theme nights and specials we really enjoyed. Very nice pulls on the property and nice beach front but oftentimes not able to use it the ocean for swimming at this location due too rough waters an undertow. The staff was very helpful and courteous and extremely friendly. It was an excellent experience. Ask for a higher level room if you want the best views. No laundry in the units. As for Cancun it's a fun area with lots to see and do in the general area. Watch out for the scam artists at the airport. Had a great visit.

Overall
To put in perspective, I have reviewed this property and the other "royal resorts" in Cancun over the past 12 years and I have stayed at them all many times. It is now a 3 star down from 3 1/2 stars previously. The bottom line...would I stay here again or should you consider staying at The Caribbean or any of the Royal Resorts in Cancun? The answer is ONLY if you are on a budget and looking for 2 bed/2 bath with full kitchen for approx. $200/night for entire family with kids.

Reality
To keep in context with some other posts, it is a LaQuinta with pool and/or ocean view. Not all rooms are ocean view, especially on a lower floors. Let's explain why it gets higher scores than is deserved. People rate their experience..some have never stayed on an ocean property, some are here with time share owners and paid nothing, while others got 2 bed/2 bath for $200 night for entire family..what a bargain compared to other properties. And MOST are time share owners who see the same people year after year who stay the same week(s) every year which makes them enjoy seeing friends and the experience is better than the resort itself. Besides, have you ever seen an owner who owns 7 weeks bad mouth their own resort? Of course not, their ego could not take it. Also, since they own at this resort, they have limited if any recent knowledge of other resorts in Cancun. You know how many very nice new resorts have gone up in Cancun in the past 10 years? A lot!! The Royal properties are 25-40 years old. Some people have never stayed in real 4 or 5 star resort so have nothing to compare to. So everyone's rating is accurate in their own mind based on their own personal experiences.

However, those who have traveled, stayed at other nicer resorts in Cancun or elsewhere are not basing their rating on the experience they had with their friends, hearing the ocean crashing to shore from their room, or value per dollar paid. It's based on the property and staff itself compared to other properties. Hands down, The Caribbean or Islander are probably the best value for a clean resort but I would only stay at a "royal resort" if one of my other preferred resorts and yes, more expensive resorts is not available ( I trade my timeshare week so I get either location for the same price...and there are far better resorts to trade for).

Bad
The rooms (I looked at 3 of them) all have a musty smell that will knock you on your butt when walking in and is imbedded in the sheets and furniture so it won't go away not matter what you do to air it out or run a/c. I have a sensitive nose and allergies, and even with prescription medication for this situation I ended up with nasal issues and sore throat requiring additional medication. There was a chard of glass half the size of my hand on the floor in the kitchen when I arrived. If the toilet seat was up it smelled like raw sewage and the shower would shoot water at me at times..crazy. There are less activities, less staff and those remaining on average speak less or worse english than in the past. They do not seem as well trained and at times disorganized. The quality of service is WAY DOWN from the past and compared to other resorts. Service is slow and the quality of food and drinks at The Royal Sands has gone way downhill since becoming all-inclusive(read the fine print of what's NOT included in your meals. I even saw a manager deny making drinks for 6 college kids willing to pay for them because they were too busy and it would take too much time to make their drinks. You should have your head examined if you take the package deal at The sands! The properties location is very inconvenient to anything accept other establishments owned by "Royal" or affiliated with them. The entrance to the hotel is 1/4 mile uphill (don't even try to walk it if you are over 50 or with little kids) and it has less drive up appeal than a motel 6. Therefore you are STUCK there or have to pay high taxi fee to get anywhere. Of course they do offer complimentary shuttle bus to their owned or affiliated properties, so you are forced to spend money with them. Not a bad deal for Royal resorts.

Good
The rooms are large and can accommodate many people. The price is very affordable and works well for families with kids (own pool area) and elderly folks. If you get at least the one bedroom you get the separate living area, 2 balconies and a full kitchen. The majority of the clientele are 60+. Of course many of them own numerous weeks and will be the first to tell you (like an animal marking its territory). But there are also families and some 20-40 y/o there with their parents who own the timeshare or gave them a week to use. Thanks to the owners for paying their dues helping to keep the grounds very clean and the room attendants seem to do a good job cleaning. The beach and palapas are wonderful along with the expansive pool (really like 5 connected pools). Ocean views are amazing and sitting on the balcony in morning and evening is relaxing. As eluded to before, all these things are standard with most other decent hotels in Cancun - But you will most likely pay much more.

Other info
Across the street next to Pirate's Cove is a raw sewage plant. If you walk by it you will know but otherwise you would probably not. They have a market (high prices like any hotel) to purchase supplies and years ago bought the one across the street because it sold the same stuff for less (eliminated competition - you are stranded again). They sold The Royal Mayan (connected to The Royal Caribbean) a year ago and changed it's name. So you no longer have access to that property. More than likely the decrease in the number of personnel and quality of the staff is due to making their income statement look as good as possible, because they will be able to sell The Caribbean in about 7 years. Poor owners get screwed like The Royal Mayan. Hey but the upside is they have a newer resort in Playa Del Carmen named The Royal Hacienda and will sell you a new time share there. Of course it is remote and not near anything....anyone see a pattern here??

That is the good, bad and the ugly. Depending on your budget and past travel experiences you can have a great time and be very pleased or underwhelmed and save some money for you next vacation. Happy travels

Room Tip: Highest floor is best for ocean view. I think 6th floor gives partial ocean view.

This was our first time at the Royal Caribbean as well as our first time at any of the other Royal Resorts. We traveled with our family of 5 with two teenage daughters and a 9 year old son. We had a great time. My kids enjoyed the pool activities, the beach was beautiful, the rooms were spacious (all rooms are ocean view), and the staff were friendly. The hotel grocery store was convenient. There is a nice fitness center $8 a day, however i felt comfortable running along the hotel strip as there were always other runners. I enjoyed the Pilates and water aerobics. We did have to transfer rooms on Saturday as part of the agreement but the transition went smoothly within an hour. It was nice having the option of dining at the Royal Islander or Royal Sands (both in Cancun) because they are all Royal Resorts you have access to all. We would defiantly revisit The Royal Caribbean.
