Couldn't fault location (although the area of beach in front of the resort has been ripped apart by a hurricane, they are planning to dredge and make good - who needs it anyway, great free half hourly shuttle between the 3 clustered resorts (Islander, Caribbean & Mayan) to the Sands (10 mins) which has a great beach). A joy to arrive (with a frequently car-sick child) and have to travel only 20 mins by minibus from airport to resort. You're assigned a concierge (not in the normal vein, but more as an adviser and available to answer all questions by phone anytime). The staff are wonderful - nothing is too much trouble. Transport is very reasonable (bus along hotel strip is only 7 pesos per person). Food is more than adequate in the resort with many many alternatives nearby. Took a trip up to Walmart (30-45 mins by bus) - yes it's a bit cheaper, but frankly the on-site supermarket more than catered for our needs - and by UK standards it wasn't too expensive.

The centre of our world for 2 weeks was the pool at the Islander. At 3pm they called happy hour when everyone around cheers and jumps into the pool to spend the next few hours until sunset sipping margaritas and pina coladas whilst making new friends in the pool. Wish I were there now!

They can book you on some great trips out. Xcaret is an excellent day out - although we nowhere near finished doing everything we wanted to do. There is an underground river you snorkel along (although you don't have to snorkel). Loads of things to see.

All in all this timeshare resort was better than any hotel I have ever stayed in. Service and attitude are the best!

What can I say? The above title says it all. We loved this resort. It was immaculate, the staff was friendly and helpful. While we were at the Islander, we also visited the other four Royal resorts in Cancun. While all were nice, and the beach at the Royal Sands was the best, I would stay at the Islander again and again. In the week that we were there, we made some friends, and got to know the staff. The pool was the best. Pacos Tacos was great and reasonably priced. Yes, the beach was small and you cannot swim there because of the rocks, but we knew that already. It is very easy to pick up the shuttle to the Sands (strong surf) or Club international (very little waves) to swim in the water. The accomadations were very roomy. We traveled with my son and although we did get a two bedroom, a one bedroom would have been more than sufficient. My son loved sleeping in the Murphy bed in the living room. We had our own personal concierge, which was a very nice touch. Part of his job, of course, was to get us to have lunch with their sales person and listen to the sales pitch. The lunch was delicious and relaxed and the sales pitch really only consisted of a short tour of a unit and a 15 minute pitch. Very low pressure and did not push when we declined to purchase. I love this resort!

I just felt the need to add to all the other wonderful reviews. The resort is immaculately clean and the staff were beyond accommodating. We had a two bedroom unit that overlooked the pool and the Caribbean. We could not have asked for a better view! Fish tacos from Pacos Tacos at the resort were great. The Thomas Moore desk arranged our transportation to and from the airport, the zipline tour (fabulous and worth doing) and transportation to the Royal Haciendas in Riveria Maya. Other reviews mentioned free transportation to this sister resort but we were told that it was not free and had to pay $15 per person, but it was money well spent and a lot of fun for the day. The only negative aspect was that there was a cost of $8 a day a person to use the fitness room and that was too expensive when three people wanted to use the facilities daily. It never appeared to be busy even though it was well equipped. The beach was very small but we knew that ahead of time, but there was still enough area to lay out and enjoy the atmosphere. I usually like to try different places when we travel but I would definately return here in the near future.

The royal Islander is a great place to stay. The hotel offers great views of the pool and of the ocean from most of the rooms i saw. The staff was great and very friendly. The hotel has good ammenties and what they dont have you can take a shuttle to any of the other Royal Reosrts on the island and they will have it. The best part is at 3pm everyday happy hour begins, free salsa and cheap drinks!!!!!

We stayed at the Royal Islander 6/6-6/13, were impressed with the staff attention to cleanliness and groundskeeping. Disappointed that the beach was unusable, but they have a free shuttle that goes to the other family resorts, and the beach at the Royal Sands was great. They also had transportation (free) to a sister resort in Playa Del Carmen, which was excellent, and they had a great beach too. Xcaret was fair--but the day was too long, and they are slow in getting their evening entertainment going. The day was long enough already.
We've travelled quite a bit, and found Mexico the most agressive in requesting tips. I realize the current circumstances have cut into everyones' revenue, but the tipping thing is just a little over the line in Cancun.
The busses were convienient, but figuring where to get off on the return is tricky, as the drivers nod yes to everything but I doubt the really understand much English. Maybe they shouldn't. For Airport transportation we used USA Transfers, and they worked well, and relatively inexpensively.
While my cellphone worked, the rated caused me to try out Skype, which means using a laptop computer and an internet connection. Made over a dozen calls that cost less than a dollar for all of 'em. I put $10 in a Skype account, and I still have $9 left. In the Bahamas T-Mobile nailed me for $3/minute.
Had a great time in Cancun, played some tennis, had great weather. Can't really complain.

My husband and I stayed at the Royal Islander from May 9th - May 16th and I must say it was a great experience. We first arrived at noon time on the 9th and we were greated by our concierge Dante and he was fantastic. Check in time usually isn't until 4pm, however, we were able to check in once we arrived, which we were happy about that because we had a wedding to get ready for as our friend s were getting married that evening. We stayed in a two bedroom villa and it was very spacious and very clean. We had maid service everyday and they did a great job. Our concierge Dante called us everyday to make sure we didn't need anything.

The Royal resorts have a shuttle bus that is able to take you to between the resorts ( so the you can use the other resorts ammenities), which is very convenient and they come every 30 minutes. The pools at the Islander were very nice. There was hardly any beach because of the hurricane's however, we knew that before we arrived, therefore it was no surpirse.

We were able to take the R1 or R2 bus to many restaurants, clubs and even Walmart and they run every few minutes 24 hrs a day, which made it very convenient.

We even used the laundry facilities, which was very convenient. The resort also has a convenient store, which has just about any and everything you could want.

Staying at the Royal Islander was a great experience and my husband and I would definitely stay there again.

We stayed at Royal Islander and the place was great. The service was excellent and all I saw were smiling faces that wanted to help find whatever you needed or wanted. The room was excellent with a great view of the ocean. The room was serviced everyday and it was great. The location was excellent. It wasn't far from downtown and malls were close. They always had taxis outside but the city bus service was very accessible, easy, and inexpensive to use. They had a great spa and access to a gym which was great. The restaurants were great and inexpensive
