“A 10 star resort”
Reviewed May 25, 2013

The Royal Islander may be a 5 star rated resort however, this grossly understates the property location, attention to detail (by the staff) and the over the top service. We vacation at the resort each year and are always amazed at their attention to the little details that they attend to for our enjoyment and safety. How many resorts have you been to that at 6:00 am you find someone from housekeeping dusting the ceiling lighting in the reception area or washing the lamp globes around the property. So many of the gardening chores which we take for granted and marvel at the beauty are done by hand in order that the guests are not disturbed. The gardens and lawns are watered by hand as not to deserve the guests. Have you ever been chased off of your patio at a resort because the sprinkler system decided it was time to come on, well not at The Royals. Have you ever been awoken by gas powered lawn trimmers or lawnmowers, well not at The Royals. You lack for nothing at The Royals. The worst day is when you have to take a flight back to reality. Yes we are time share owners but we have felt this same way from the beginning, even before our ownership. Owners since 1998 and never disappointed even after some devastating Hurricanes.

Room Tip: Ocean view is our favorite and spectacular

I stayed at the Royal Islander as an exchange through Interval International. The hotel was very clean and the staff was working all the time to keep the rooms and grounds looking nice. I was not very impressed with the restaurants on site and we ended up eating out more than within the resort. The pool was small and there is no lazy river for those of you looking to relax on your floating tube. The ocean had very strong currents and not a good place to just relax either.
This hotel is also not in a very good location and you have to take the bus or taxi to anywhere you needed to go. Beware of the buses because they will run you over and they may not even stop when you ask them to...even after three attempts.

we can't get enough of this resort. the staff is superb! the food was wonderful. we had great weather to enjoy the pool. the resort goes up and beyond to fulfill our expectations. thomas moore did an awesome job with providing transportation and displaying adequate attractions, for which we participated in quite a few events this year.

Room Tip: any room is perfect, no bad views

Haven't been to the Islander in a few years so took the opportunity to go with friends. The Royals are a class act in many ways. Rooms are gorgeous. Beach is clean, safe, and beautiful. All the villas have great views. The staff very friendly. You don't find the all day drunks you might have to contend with at an all-inclusive. Most people there are members and thus are friendly and courteous. Now the negatives. The food leaves a to be desired,( processed chicken breast and hamburgers) was pricey for a member's resort. Poncho and Willey's across the street was better. The grocery store was way too high also. I saw mark-ups 30 to 100 percent verses Wal Mart. For a resort that cost almost a grand for annual week's maintenance you would expect them not to gouge the members. We got drinks on the beach a few times, and I can tell you it was cheap liquor and expensive. When I asked for a better Rum, however the waiter happily took care of it. Also the company rep kept bugging my friends to join a new program, extra of course, and waist half a day at another resort for the sales pitch. Most time-shares pull that, but I expected better from the Royals. Vacationing in Mexico is changing and is no longer a bargain. Looks like the Royal Resorts are becomming just another time-share trying to get more from their members.

Room Tip: Ask for a room close to your choice..pool or beach so you walk less. Try the local restaurants and t...

My wife and I just returned from a week stay at the royal islander and it was great! I will try not not ramble on and focus on main points and try to touch on things i was curious about going in to try to help some people reading and considering:

Arriving in Cancun airport was not to bad, people near the exit were a little pushy about trying to get us to buy excursions, but after I said no a couple times they backed off. Transport to the resort, i HIGHLY recommend booking through Thomas More travel (on the resorts website) and simply paying the $22 for 2 people to get to the resort. They are waiting right outside the airport in their uniforms, and quickly grab your bags and put you in shuttle and soon after take off. Taxi's in Cancun do not have meters like here in the states. So all fares need to be agreed upon prior to going, and I'm sure that could get a little sticky.

Arrival at the resort was a breeze. Check in, synced a credit card with your room (all purchases in the resort are made on your room key and charged later to your card, will talk more later about it). Room was nice, open and clean with a KILLER view of the beach. We stayed in building 7 on the 2nd floor. They have 2 types of rooms, standard rooms and villas. We had a standard room, but upon going into our room, the door that connects the 2 rooms was open so we got the chance to look at the villas, WOW. They are big and seriously nice. But to avoid any later drama i locked the door and moved on.

The resort itself was quite large, but what made it more interesting was the fact that it was connected to the other 2 royal resorts (Royal Mayan and Royal Caribbean) by either walking on the beach or parallel to the beach on the walk ways, was a nice touch. 2 restaurants on this property, Cayo Largo & Paco's Tacos, were both nice, good, and decently priced. Each resort has its own different style of restaurants with different food, was nice to try different things while there.

Now for a little about the room key thing. It is a lot like you would find on a cruise ship, where at the beginning of your stay you sync up a credit card to the keys and use the key for purchases everywhere on the property. This was very nice plus to not have to always carry a wallet around. The biggest surprise was the "market" that each royal resort has. It is a very nice market with good choices and reasonable prices. Was cool to be able to buy some bread and stuff to make sandwiches for quick meals. A very nice thing they had there.

Plenty of excursion options for varying prices. We ended up doing the Cancun Sailing Private charter excursion. WOW!!! We were on the Morrocoy sailboat and had an AMAZING time. The crew was unreal, all you could drink beer, buffet lunch, shopping at the island, snorkeling, and all for only $62 a person. Just unreal, I would HIGHLY recommend giving it a shot, was an absolute blast. The only "down side" I was concerned about was having to take the city bus to the top of the hotel zone to catch the boat. But I was so wrong to be concerned. We walked out the resort the the main street, and as soon as we walked on it a city bus was passing, stopped immediately and picked us up. 8.50 pesos a person (like 75 cents USD) and it would take you all over the hotel zone. He actually asked us where we were going, as we got there, he stopped and let us off, perfect. Just as easy coming back to resort.

Another quite impressive thing these resorts offered was a free shuttle service to and from all 5 of the royal resorts. And if you stay at one, you are welcome to visit others and use everything they have there. AND your room key works the exact same as if you are at your resort, very convenient. We visited 4 of the 5 in our week, and not to be mean or rude, but in my opinion the Royal Sands was easily the nicest. As far as pool area and such. Pool towels are at each resort, check them out and swap as much as needed, then bring them back and they will tear up your check out receipt.

I'll stop rambling now, but give this place some real consideration. It was VERY nice and a great time. I hope i covered everything I need to. But if you have another other questions or concerns, feel free to email me and I will try my best to help: David5131@yahoo.com.

Thanks!!

My husband and I spent a week at the Royal Islander from April 20th to April 27th. We had a one bedroom villa on the the 7th floor. It was immaculate, comfortable and extremely well equipped. The maid cleaned every day except Sunday and did a wonderful job. We had a superb view of the beach and pool, and bonus view of the lagoon as we walked out of our apartment. The food was great. The market had everything you need for breakfast and lunch more if you want it. we took a trip to Walmart on the Sunday, a wild ride on the bus , felt safe.Staff in Walmart were friendly and helpful. , The beach is amazing. We walked for an hour every morning, played in the ocean every day day. We love the surf, even when the flags were red , We didn't go in alone or out of our depth . It was a little rough for kids however, two of the days the sea was calmer and children were able to get in with their parents. The pools were great and the service fine. The Royal Islander was a find for us and would love to return this time with our three girls.. However they are severing their ties with Interval International and we do not have RCI.. Why go all inclusive" The apartments are perfect for self catering and the restaurants on all three resorts offer a wonderful variety of food. Would love to go back .

I will start with the positive . We own an Ocean view on the forth floor and I loved loved the morning sunrises! The rooms are average no upgrades but totally enjoyable. Beds are very comfortable . Kitchen equipped to cook . The beach is absolutely AMAZING !! Life guards are always there. They also have a grocery store that had everything you need. Fresh fruit ,milk eggs etc..now the negative . They are short staffed waiters on the beach . So I had to walk up to the bar. Also they had bottom shelf cheapest liqueur you can get on the beach bar. Drinks are weak with maybe a cap of liqueur. I recommend BYOB ! Food is excellent !!! I recommend the grouper ceviche ! The prices did go up quit a bit! This is due to Royal's transitioning to all inclusive! Which I do not want. Waiters lose out on tips and quality of food will go down and the drinks will not be top shelf. Also people get up at 5:30 to save chairs around he pools ! Grateful I am a beach person! On this trip my daughter who also is a owner got arrested by the resorts guards for walking down beach . She had a band on from an other resort she was staying in. I thought that was uncalled for !!! Also they don't like guest to visit !!! Just make sure you check all your guest in at the lobby!
