“Fantastic Time at the Riu Caribe”
Reviewed January 12, 2009

My family and I spent one week at the Riu Caribe. From the moment we walked in the hotel was very clean, the staff was friendly and the food was fantastic. We had a small glitch with our room the first night, but the staff took care of our complete move the next day to another room. The buffet's were great as well as the other three on site restaurants. The entertainment staff was enjoyable and helpfull. I would definitely recommend this hotel to either singles or families.

When we arrived i couldnt believe how beautiful this hotel was. we were greated by a porter who tooked our bags up when we checked in immediately. The hotel reception was simply stunning with green mangroves all through, and evena manmade stream complete with turtles running through the hotel!
All inclusive is the only option there but well worth it, the food was out of this world and so much to chose from.
The pool also lovely and on its own private beach. All rooms were stocked with a mini bar which was replenished daily. the rooms were huge, comfortable and stylishly decorated.
Thos hotel really was paradise and cancun is an amazing city with so much to do, culture activities, adventure, shopping, bars... I could go on forever!
Rui hotels are famed around the world and this one certainly didnt dissapoint. there are 2 sister hotels in Cancun and you can eat in there for no extra charge, which sometimes makes a nice change.
Rooms cleaned everyday and I loved how the maids would make swans out of the towels- real luxury!

I preciously book an all-inclusive vacation package through expedia at the Riu Caribe for the days of August 13-Aug 19 2008. The stay consisted of 5 people in two rooms, 714 which had a king size bed and 716 which had double beds. These rooms were not up to the standards of the advertisement on Expedia nor the conditions that a hotel should provide.

The conditions in room 714 were:
Unsatisfactory bathrooms which were not cleaned in the right manner.
There was public hair left from prior guest.
The toilets themselves did not flush properly.

The unsafe conditions were:
Two lights did not turn on which was also very annoying when it was time to get dressed and if you got up at night to use the bathroom.

The conditions in room 716 were just as poor.
The A.C. did not work which inconvenienced us in many ways.
One of the guest was asthmatic and needed the A.C. on.
As well as the heat got unbearable at night and without the A.C. working all 5 guest stayed in one room for a majority of the trip.

Another bed:
When asked for a cot, we were told they were none left.
However, there was one left in the hallway by the cleaning ladies that we took.

Both rooms has problems with the room keys.
Room keys did not function properly.
Security was sent up to our rooms numerous amount of times throughout the day to open our doors especially if the cleaning ladies were not on the floor to open the doors for us.
I found that the cleaning ladies opening our doors was very unsafe because they did not know if we belonged to those rooms. We could have easily gotten robbed.

All of these complaints were reported as they occurred to the front desk. However, the problems were never solved. Maintenance was sent to our rooms but did not fix anything.

When asked to speak to a manager there was never one in the hotel to speak to. When asked to call expedia from the front desk I was told that its an international call that I would have to pay for it.

Is there ever a manager at the Riu Caribe because here are a list of times we tried to reach one and one was never available.
There was no manager on duty for the whole week my party and I stayed at the Rui.
Expedia called the hotel three times and could not speak with a manager.
As well as, Choice Privileges department called and there was no manager available as well.

When asked if there were any other rooms available that we could stay in, the response that was given was the hotel was booked. If asked if we could switch to another Riu Hotel on the strip they said “NO, we would have to call Expedia since we booked our trip through them.” However, they would not allow us to call Expedia from the front desk.

My wife and I took a 5 day getaway to cancun from Philadelphia January 7 - 11 to Riu Caribe. We have been fortunate enough to have stayed at many many all-inclusive resorsts in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya, Jamaica, Punta Cana, Puerta Plata - and this is the WORST hotel we have stayed at. Why? The main reason in the food - its absolutely horrible, and when I say horrible, I mean there is almost nothing edible. I am usually not very picky with food, but the chicken was undercooked, the beef was like gum, the vegetables tasted like fish, the buffet options were very limited, I mean very limited. Also, the service was just as bad as the food. You have to get your own drinks and utinesels. I'm surprised they didn't make us wash our own dishes. Also, there are about 3 restaurants which you need reservations for. However, they will tell you they are always full and then you pass by in the evening they are about 60% full always. If you want to "officially" make reservation, you have to get up early and make reservations at the Mexican restaurant during a certain time period. But if you have better things to do (since you can't call and make reservations and you have to wake up early to do this) just go directly to the restaurant any night and give them $10. Unfortunately the food there is not that much better than in the buffett. Also, they say every room is ocean view, well our room was 5% ocean view and 90% vacant land / construction site view. When we asked for a different room they did not even care to listen and told us is is absolutely ocean view (picture attached). The beach is like any other cancun hotel beach, very crowded and narrow. If you are going for a nice beach, go to Riviera Maya - NOT cancun. Finally, be careful at night - we went to The City night club with the hotel. They provide transportation there and you get back on your own. One of the people from that night came back to the hotel and was mugged and beaten up at the hotel entrance - right on the stairs. He was hit with a bat and glass bottle, unconcious, bleeding, with a broken nose. He was laying there in blood at the hotel entrance for about 1 hour until a guest, not a security guard, found him. The security either is not there, or simply did not want to be involved. When security finally saw what happened, they helped get him to his room (while we was still gushing blood) and left him there. It was another guest who finally took him to a hospital where he got stiched up. They asked if hotel would pay for cab to the hospital, and the security guards said no. Take my advice, avoid this hotel.

Front Desk:
I had many issues with the front desk, firstly they placed us on the first floor which we called the dungeon. Our view was of the parking lot, and the room was a small, stuffy, smokers room which was defaintly not what we asked for, Immediatly we asked to switch. It took a huge argument to finally get a decent room for the night however the room had 1 bed and there was 3 people.... we then asked for a cot that was never delivered..
Staff:
The entertainment staff was very good, they made us feel very welcome. The bartenders were all good and it didn't matter what coloured wrist band you had most of the time. The waiters were also very friendly however we did have an issue at the maria tequila restaurant.

Food:
It was very good at first, however you start to get sick of it after a while I recommend the pizza place everyone once in a while to get a change. The steak dinner was fantasic great staff there defiantly recommended. However the maria tequila restaurant was disapointing, I ordered a steak and could not even swallow it.

Rooms:
They were okay, not what we expected we thought they would be a nice suite however that was not the case. The beds were hard as a rock and the t.v. had nothing.

Bars:
I enjoyed the lobby bar best it was great service, the sports bar was okay however the food there was disapointing. The selection was refrigerated hotdogs, hamburgers, and sandwiches that had been sitting there all day. Then there was a microwave to heat up the hotdogs and hamburgers. There was also stale nachos and fake cheese. I do not suggest you eat there.

Night life:
There was a new club every night and you went with the hotel, it was usually around 40-50$ bucks a night. I do not suggest you do it every night but once in a while it was fun. For kids theres not much at night.

Overall i would defaintly never go back, in my opinion it was not a 5 star hotel and I suggest you spend the extra money for a decent hotel.

The Riu Caribe is OK. Not bad, but nothing that stands out. It is the cheapest Riu hotel in Cancun and for the price it is OK. You can see the nicer, newer Rius from the beach.

The buffet is OK, breakfast was really good (hard to screw up bacon and pancakes). Lunch and dinner had enough spread to fill you up. The ala carte steak house was horrible, no one at our table could finish their meals. Meat was better cooked at the buffet! The dessert (baked Alaska) tasted lighter fuel.

Beach was small for Cancun with lots of sea weed. Rooms were clean and in decent shape but somewhat dated. All rooms have balconies with sea view, at least I think so. The gym was small and packed in the morning. Beach is too short to run on but you can run on the sidewalk outside the hotel along the strip. It gets hot fast in Cancun so run early. The nightly show was amateurish but fun (at least if you been drinking during the day).

For the price I think you get a fair deal at Riu Caribe. However, too many days there would probably get boring fast. We only stayed two nights, we can't do the AI thing for to long.

My husband and I of 30 years and 2 teen boys 14 and 19 stayed at the Rie Caribe from 12/28/08 thru 1/4/09. Would not stay there again. Hotel lobby looks nice but not air conditioned. The front desk staff not very friendly or helpfull. Did not know much about what the hotel had to offer of where the scuba office was. First tried to put us in a room which was not the room we booked, but did change us. Air conditioning took 2 days to get cold. All other staff friendly and on the ball. No high end liquor. Rooms clean but not modern or up to date. Beds are hard. The hallways where not cleaned of beer bottle or champagne classes. Took 3 days to remove them from the top of the ice machine. The elevators where extremely dirty. Even blood on the mirror for 3 days before cleaned off. Floors in lobby not washed after New Years Eve Party. The food is terrible not alot of flavor. Same choices every day. They do not throw out food that has been sitting there for awhile. They add to the new tray of food and mix it in. The way they have you make reservations for the other restaurants is terrible. Then you find out they are buffet style restaurants too. Well, except for the steak restaurant. The Sports bar food, which they brag is open 24/7 with food, I think is just the left over hamburgers. hot dogs and lunch meat from the dinner that night. We ended up going out to eat the last three nights of our vacation. Food was terrific! Pool was clean but chilly. Beach would of been nice if it was cleaned of sea weed.
Got scammed by a photographer who was let into the hotel to take pictures of families on New Years Eve.
This is far from being a 5 or even a 4 star hotel. If you are expecting a 4 star lower your standards a little bit. We thought for the price we payed, we did not get what we payed for.
