We just returned from a fun vacation at this resort. If your looking for a great value...nice beach this is it. It's kept very clean and Modern. Riu caribe has the nicest beach out of all the cancun Riu's, it is not full of rocks or super small. Plenty of chairs for all to use. The pools are nice ,one with a swim up bar. There are 4 other restaurants. There is a pool restaurant, Asian, Mexican and a steakhouse. The steakhouse is the only one that serves you..the rest are technically buffets. The restaurants are okay with the steakhouse being in our opinion the best. However on the buffets there is always something good to eat and sometimes the same things are like the restaurants . No one got sick at all which I know people want to know. Entertainment varies from magic shows to acrobats. There is no disco for late dancing. So if you want a clean fun not to loud and crazy vacation with great service this is it! Take some dollars and tip liberally, they appreciate it...average wage is 5.00 a day! We loved the two young men, Michelangelo and leo?,who came around the pool and laughed and joked in their funny costumes. This would be a good resort for kids too. The kids we saw were with the staff and having fun activities. We would go back, we feel we got great value for our money.

My two friends and I went for my birthday. Very quick to check us in and so helpful. This hotel is the reason why we are going back to Mexico this year. Only downfall to this hotel was lack of entertainment. However we only paid $846 for a week so I can't complain too much. We were upgraded to ocean view. The room was spectacular. Gorgeous bathroom and the view was breathtaking from our oversized balcony. I would go back to the riu caribe on a future trip for a shorter stay. The staff was awesome they went out of their way to remember our names and so fb me happy birthday. Tips go a log way. Within the resort you don't feel pressured about how much to give but off the resort you will. STAY HERE !!!!! Good hotel for the price

Just came home from enjoying a week's honeymoon at this fabulous establishment. If you are considering a holiday in Mexico this would be an excellent choice, four restaurants with the Mexican and the steak house being our favourites. It was my birthday whilst on honeymoon and without prompt the hotel really made it special.
The weather was perfect, there is a pool to suite everyones taste, an extensive cocktail list and staff so welcoming and friendly.
We ventured into Cancun, for the equivilent of £1.00 return ticket on the R2 bus, it was easy to travel into the heart of the markets. Hiring a car was cheap, £18.00 for a full tank of petrol, and we visited the Chichen Itza, 2 hours drive each way but worth the trip!
If you are looking for sun and sand, this is the perfect location, looking for heritage and culture this is the perfect location.
Word of advice, you have to pay departure tax at the airport which is around £45 each - could sting if unexpected!

Room Tip: Top tips in general.. 1) book your tables well in advance, they only let you book up to 48 hours in...

We stayed at the Riu Caribe from Feb 13 to 20th, 2014. This was our first experience with this resort, and in the hotel zone area of Cancun, but not our first trip to Cancun. The past four years we have stayed on the Riviera south of PDC (Barcelo’ Maya Palace). We thought we would give this resort and the hotel zone a try for a little change of pace.

Location/arrival. The resort location is of course quite a bit closer to the airport than heading down South to the Playa area. Upon arrival we cruised through Immigration and Customs fairly quickly. Got the “green light” and were out the door of the airport to find our ground transportation within about 30-40 minutes. Our vacation package came with shared transportation provided by Amstar, who got us hooked up in a 10-12 passenger van almost immediately (may not have hurt that I tipped him a few bucks and asked to get set up with other Riu Caribe guests). Mission accomplished, the other passengers were also heading to the Riu Caribe, or next door at the Riu Palace Peninsula. Nice job by the Amstar folks. Drive to the hotel was about a ½ hour or so during a somewhat busy traffic hours (5-5:30pm). Check in was smooth and we were settled in our room within 2 hours of arrival at the airport.
Room. We booked an Ocean front suite, requesting 6th floor or higher and got room number 653, which is in the middle of the hotel building under the “R” on the Riu sign, 6th floor. View was great, looking straight out at the Ocean. Although the balcony is fairly large it only had a couple plastic chairs and a small plastic table. The room itself was fine, but nothing spectacular. I don’t really get the white and blue interior design that Riu uses but that’s OK. The room had a King bed, it was clean, had good water pressure and consistent water temperature control. The toilet flush valve handle was loose, causing it to run constantly, and I could not get it tightened by hand. We called the front desk about that and the issue was repaired by the next morning. Overall, the room was fine for us as we don’t spend much time there other than to shower, change clothes or sleep. The mini fridge was cold, and stocked with Dos Equis beer, Pepsi, water and club soda. They restock every other day, but we’d call if we need more and the resort would respond. We typically left $2-3 USD each day for both the maid and the fridge stocker.

Hotel Grounds. Compared with he vast expanse of the Barcelo’ Maya property, this resort property was small but we knew that going in. The property was clean and well kept. The staff was constantly working to pick up debris, clean areas that needed attention, etc. Beach front was nice with sugar soft sand. Pool areas were nice. The larger pool in the middle with a swim up bar is where the animation team conducted their daily activities. A smaller pool was located next to that within a short distance to the lunch buffet/bar, and another “quiet” pool was over on the east end of the property with its own snack bar/bar. “Towel game” was in force, unfortunately. You needed to reserve some pool or beach chairs by 7am or so, or you might be out of luck until later in the day. That’s not a problem unique to this resort. Be aware that areas of the pool become shaded by the hotel high rise as the afternoon progresses. I

Bars. In the Lobby bar we enjoyed the company of Vicente’, the day time bartender, and the other guys that would staff that area after 5pm when things got busy. The sports bar was also fun to hang out in during the Olympics, and Frankie the bartender there was great. All the bar staff we ran in to really seemed to hustle to get drinks out to folks. Another nice feature of this resort was waitresses and waiters roaming various area taking drink orders; the lobby, pool area and the beach area as well.

Dining. Breakfast and lunch buffets were similar quality to what we had experienced before at other A.I. resorts. Evening dining left a little bit to be desired, however. We’re not big fans of buffet dining in the evening and the a la carte dining experiences were nothing special. We ate at all three, with the Mexican probably being the food we enjoyed the most. Steakhouse served thin steaks, but it was a nice dining experience outside in the open air venue. Asian is really just another buffet with food being just O.K. We hopped on the bus one night and went to the buffet at the Riu Cancun about a mile or so up the road. That buffet food seemed a bit better quality than what was offered at the Caribe, and the Riu Cancun venue had better ambiance we thought.

Entertainment. We did take in a couple of the theater shows but found them to be a little bit boring and left early. We typically would entertain ourselves in the evening by having drinks with friends we travelled with and those who we met during our stay. We did meet a number of fun and friendly people at this resort. The clientele seem generally very outgoing, definitely not “stuffy”.

Off the resort. We did one day trip to Isla Mujeres which was fun. It’s only about a 5-10 minute walk to the Ultramar ferry dock from the resort. Ferry cost just under $20 USD PP, cost to rent a golf cart on Isla was $50 for the day. They give you info on the Ferry ride over about how to get hooked up with the golf cart. Another day we took the bus a couple miles up towards the Hard Rock and Coco Bongos for some shopping and cervaza stops. Bus driver accepts $1 USD PP, or I believe 10 pesos, for each time you get on.

Other/Summary. The resort is nice and a pretty good value for the price. The staff is very attentive and they do everything they can to make their guests feel welcome. Much has been written about the elevator situation, and that is somewhat of a nagging issue. For some strange reason there only seems to be one or maybe two elevators running at one time which was annoying during busy usage times (i.e. mornings, evenings). They really should remedy that situation. We have no regrets having stayed at the Riu Caribe but I don’t think we’ll go back simply because we now realize we preferred our past stays down South on the Riviera, with larger properties, better evening dining experience, easier room access, better entertainment and more relaxed atmosphere. Overall, I'd give this property a 3.5 rating.

Room Tip: Request Ocean front suite upgrade, 6th floor or higher for nice view from balcony

We were there February 12-19, 2014. This was our first visit to this resort and we were highly pleased with the resort and employees. Rooms were very clean and kept that way. We were put in room 294 when we arrived and our travel agent had emailed and requested a higher floor, that being said Karen at the front desk moved us to room 587 with an ocean view. Hernan was the Apple representative and a very pleasant one at that, helping us in any way he could. We met Nicolas Orozco who is the Director General whom my husband liked very much. Aide ran the pizza and bar on the beach and she was a hoot with a very pleasant personality. Bibi another manager we spoke with frequently. Then some of the entertainment troupe Leo, Smiley, Carlos, and of course Toni were keeping us busy in the pool, around the pool and on the stage. There is a swim up bar which is a plus for us. The food was good and we enjoy buffets so restaurants really didn't interest us. We always asked for Antonio's area when we went to the buffet as he was always quick and very cheerful. Restrooms were very clean and that is a main factor for me anyway. Located close to Cancun so you can take a public bus downtown which is $1 each way. Beach was smaller then others we have been to but everything else made up for that. That being said we would go back and we would recommend it to others.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a higher level with an ocean view. There are 9 floors and we were on the 5th floor...

Wont be long before somebody gets hurt.If you get a side room beware the balcony is about 3ft x 3ft it just fits 2 small plastic chairs and table.Worst balcony I have ever had.Very loud noisey hotel drunks everywhere especially late at night. The corridors echo everything take some earplugs.Staff very good food not bad.

Just returned from vacation at the Riu Caribe in Cancun. We have stayed at several Riu resorts in the last 10 yrs, including this one. However this trip wasn't great. The photo shows our ocean front view from our room. That's right with the tree line the only real view was the pump station to the pool. They offer three specialty restaurants (Asian –Mexican-Steakhouse). We tried all three, you can skip the Asian…it’s just like any Chinese buffet you visit at home. Nothing special about it at ALL. The Steakhouse was far the best.
We won’t be booking at this hotel in the future. The Riu rewards program is a joke, when we checked in the front counter wouldn’t even take out program number and when asked about any type of upgrade she replied” You already have the ocean front view”. We have stayed at this hotel on three other trips but can assure you there won’t be a fourth.

Room Tip: For normally the same price you can stay at the Riu Cancun, stay there. Not the Caribe..
