Just returned from vacation at the Riu Caribe in Cancun. We have stayed at several Riu resorts in the last 10 yrs, including this one. However this trip wasn't great. The photo shows our ocean front view from our room. That's right with the tree line the only real view was the pump station to the pool. They offer three specialty restaurants (Asian –Mexican-Steakhouse). We tried all three, you can skip the Asian…it’s just like any Chinese buffet you visit at home. Nothing special about it at ALL. The Steakhouse was far the best.
We won’t be booking at this hotel in the future. The Riu rewards program is a joke, when we checked in the front counter wouldn’t even take out program number and when asked about any type of upgrade she replied” You already have the ocean front view”. We have stayed at this hotel on three other trips but can assure you there won’t be a fourth.

Room Tip: For normally the same price you can stay at the Riu Cancun, stay there. Not the Caribe..

Just returned from our holiday at the Riu Caribe February 20 – 27, 2014 and are happy to report that we were 100% pleased with our destination choice. If you are considering a vacation to Cancun, you would not be disappointed in this location and resort. We will definitely be returning.

Check in was a breeze. Thank you to Christian at the front desk. Welcome drinks a nice touch.

Rooms – very spacious and always kept very clean. The washroom has a large walk in shower (no tub) and an adjustable shower head to accommodate all heights. Always had lots of hot water. We had room 693 which is a corner ocean front room with a wrap-around balcony overlooking the ocean/pool/gardens. The nicest room we’ve had on any of our holidays. Our co-travellers had room 663 which was an ocean view room that overlooked the gardens/pool and straight out to the ocean. If you book ocean view or ocean front request 4th floor or higher, you will be able to see over top of the palm trees and you won’t be disappointed. The only standard rooms we could see and there seemed to be very few, overlooked the lobby, so could understandably be slightly noisy at times. Well worth it to pay the little extra.

Food – Breakfast each morning in the main buffet dining room was plentiful with choices and always very good. A smaller breakfast buffet was also available by the pool for the guests who like to sleep in. Lunch was also served in the main dining room, however we always grabbed something at the poolside buffet, again lots to choose from and very good. Gotta love the 3 flavour self-serve soft ice cream machine. Also self-serve dispensers for ice water, wine, pop, and hot beverages. For dinner we ate at the dining room buffet and the variety of dishes was plentiful and tasty. We heard that the night time Steak House dinner (which is located at the poolside buffet area) was very good. You do have to line up to make reservations for the Asian, Mexican, and Steak House; however anytime we walked by the line up shortly after 7am it wasn’t very long. Be sure to try the pizza hut over at the far side.

Servers – always had a smile on their face, very friendly and willing to make your meal time an enjoyable one.

Drinks – Strawberry Daiquiris, Bob Marley’s, Pina Colodas, Miami Vice, Dirty Monkey, Mud Slide – all very good and this resort does not skimp on the alcohol.

Beach – this resort has the nicest beach in the area. We did walk all the way to the Riu that you can see way over on the far point with the two round turrets. Probably close to 3 miles each way. Just a heads up that if you want beach chairs or pool chairs under a tikki shade umbrella then you do need to go out by 6:30am and reserve. It’s sad that you have to do this, but it’s your only guarantee. Sadly you do see chairs reserved and they don’t show up until noon to use them. We arrived at the resort at approximately 3pm and actually had to lay on our towels on the beach as there were no chairs available. We did notice mid-week that more chairs had been brought in. Drink orders are also taken on the beach.

Pools – one very large that zig zags throughout the garden area and one quiet pool way over at the far side.

Entertainment – we actually only went to one of the evening shows. Doesn’t seem to matter what resort you go to the shows all seem to be similar. The show we did see was very well done. Kudos to the entertainment team who go all day entertaining on the beach or poolside and again in the evening. Staff always very friendly and make a point of stopping to chat.

Excursions – lots to choose from (they say 92), we did “The XPlor”. A full day of zip lining (2 lines of 7 each, do both) with braking system so you can hang and enjoy the ride and not have to be concerned about when to start braking, rafting/paddling and swimming thru the underground caverns and driving amphibious vehicles (2 routes, do both). We ran out of time to take advantage of the included buffet. We booked thru our Sunwing Rep in the main lobby - $149 pp very well worth the money.

We also did para-sailing arranged from the beach (far left by Sea Doos) for $120 US or $140 Cdn per couple. Up in the air for about 20 minutes.

Tipping – even though they are not looking for it, please leave them a couple dollars at meal times and when ordering drinks. Don’t forget to tip the washroom cleaning staff (by the pool), gardeners, room cleaning staff they tend to get forgotten about and they work very hard too.

LADIES…….be sure to walk next door to the Riu Palace and go to the Fini Jewelry store. Take your Hubby’s Visa card.

Good and varied menu at the main food restaurant, also at the indian a-la carte. Nice and clean rooms every day. We stayed at 9t floor, had no problems with elevators and it was silent every night. The pool and the beach area was excellent. During our 2 weeks holiday, me and my daughter became good friends with the entertainers. We appreciated their activities and we had lots of fun.
Fantastic people!
Specially Zaira was wonderful. She was outstanding and so kind to us, always had a friendly smile and the time for good conversations. Her friendliness and outstanding behavior is reason enough to go back.

Booked this hotel the night before we flew. Arrived mid afternoon shown into the main hall and welcomed by the guy from reception. Very organised two girls went around with wristbands and then our names were called individually for the keys we were then allowed off to our rooms. We had the rooms on the third floor above the jacuzzi looking out onto the main pool room looked as tho it had recently been refreshed but not like the brochure photographs the furniture is still the old rıu wooden furniture. But immaculately clean. Towels refreshed every day! Buffet restaurant was good choice for a all inclusive breakfast was probably the best selection out of the 3 meal times! Do not try the margharita restaurant not worth it food is if poor quality buffet restaurant is much better! Didn't eat at the other 2 a lâ carte as was put off by our first experience! Lounge area is big but if you want Wifi in the evening you will be fighting for tables as it's always choca! Main bug bare is the bed situation clearly not enough for the capacity of the hotel and people were going as far as reserving beds with magazines as the towel hut wasn't open! Only complaint about staff is the lady on the chill out bar next to the beach she mutters insults under her breath for those who don't tip! Wouldn't hurt her to Crack a smile every now and again either! All in all we enjoyed our stay for what we paid for it. I can understand the more negative reviews from those who have paid through the nose to stay there but for what we paid can't complain! Would recommend for young couples and even families.

Just arrived back from a week at this hotel and had a good time. Check in was nice and quick and the room was very spacious. The refurb is a bit slap dash but it wasn't a major issue. Rooms were always nice and clean. The food was better than other Riu hotels I have stayed at. Plenty of options but does get a bit samey. I wouldn't even bother with the a la carte restraunts. When we went the service and food was worse than the main buffet restraunt. The majority of the staff were very polite and helpful. The only staff member that I found rude was at the relax pool bar. If you didn't tip her she muttered insults under her breath. A bit daft when a lot of the people who stay at this hotel speak spanish. The beach and ocean were simply amazing. Only real negative is that we were charged twice for the dolphin discovery and chichen itza trips. We booked this through Thomson and we couldn't really resolve the issue as we were leaving that day. Jonny (the rep) to his credit tried his best to reolve it. I will have to take it up with Thomson in the UK now.

We stayed at the Caribe from 8th -19th February. Plus points were the room, beach, food in the main restaurant and on the whole the service. Minus points were the alcoholic drinks (either watered down or such small measues. The cocktails were like drinking fruit juice. The day and evening entertainment was dire! It was like being on a 1970's Butlins camp. The management really do need to address these areas. I felt on the whole it was a safe bet for a hotel if you've never been to Cancun before but I personally wouldnt return here but would recommend if you could afford it to upgrade to the Rui Palace next door which I heard people saying was much more luxurious.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor with full sea view
