“Great time”
Reviewed July 16, 2013

The property itself was in great shape, the rooms and all facilities were clean and flawlessly maintaned. The staff work super hard and you can't say enough good things about them. This was my first time at a RIU property and I was impressed. Every thing was just a shade better than the other resorts I've stayed at.

The only thing I would change would be to change the reservation system for the speciatly restaurants.

Cheers!

Stayed here in 2009 for 4 nights. Check in was a bit of a mess; booked a king, oceanfront room and was given a double room with no view that smelled like mildew. Went back to the front desk and was told rooms are not guaranteed until check in but they "upgraded" us to an ocean view room. Whatever! Not a good start! The rooms are incredibly small and basic, but if you're there for the beach, who cares!? We requested a mattress pad because the beds were really hard, when we came back from lunch, the beds were re-made with pads and covered in fresh flower petals and the towels were folded like little elephants, too cute!

I was most impressed by: Food - Everywhere! Free drinks - Everywhere! Free entertainment - All Day! No, seriously. You could go somewhere on the resort at anytime of the day and find snacks, drinks, etc. You don't even have to get out of the pool to get a lovely beverage from the swim up bar. Everyday was a different "theme" of food near the pool area. The best was a poolside BBQ with smoked meat and tropical drinks poured in Coconut hulls. Full belly and then swinging in a shaded hammock, bliss.

The pool activities were lots of fun, who doesn't love Tequilla Volleyball? Ample beach space and drink service on the beach was fantastic. Bring lots of $1's for tips, they are very much appreciated and you will get better drinks and service if you aren't stingy.

We had a liquor dispenser attached to the wall in our room with full bottles of Tequila and Rum for the lazy times when taking the elevator to the lobby bar was just too much work.

Get reservations for the steak house 1 day in advance, it was totally worth waiting for to have a great meal, beside the ocean, under the stars on such a beautiful night.

Check in was irritating but everything else was awesome!

Room Tip: Not guaranteed until you get there! Most rooms have a "view" of the ocean, but do not face...

This was our first time in Mexico (travelled 02/06/13 to 16/06/13). Check in was quick and easy, we were welcomed by Leo who was very efficient and friendly. We had requested a high floor room as recommended by other on here. We were given the fourth floor we but weren’t disappointed, after all it was only a request, the view was still fantastic. The room was lovely and clean, air conditioning great, remember you have to keep the patio door closed or it doesn’t work. Our bar was restocked every few days and the one time that it wasn’t, I spoke to Leo at reception and he organised for someone to do it there and then. Unfortunately the first two days, it rained heavily but the entertainment staff were great organising lots to do activity wise indoors. The food was fantastic! The main buffet restaurant which is where we ate most of our evening meals had a great variety of food. I can be a bit fussy but managed to find plenty of lovely things to eat without it being too repetitive. The restaurant staff were so friendly, we were served on several occasions by Eva & Israel, they couldn’t do enough for you, we never had an empty glass! The drinks at the bar were great too, tried many cocktails and they were all great. During the day the pool entertainment was relentless, the staff work so incredibly hard all day, they are funny and get everyone going around the pool, Juan's dry sense of humour is hilarious! However they are not pushy and if you want to stay out of it they are happy to leave you be. The only small thing was that around the pool in the afternoon there are a few young American's that got a little over zealous with alcohol and forgot that there are kids around with their behaviour and language. The entertainment staff were quick to pull them back into line though. The evening entertainment was pretty good, and varied throughout our stay. We ventured out of the hotel a few times and the local buses are very easy to master but hold on tight! We caught the bus on a few occasions to go shopping and ventured into the sister hotel, Riu Palace. We found a lovely walk back after a few drinks in their bar, head out to the beach and you can walk along the waters edge all the way back, beautiful and relaxing! The other thing I would highly recommend was a trip over the Isle de Mujeres. Don’t book this through an agent, just nip along to the ferry port which is left if you go out of the front of the hotel, its not far. We hired golf buggies on the ferry which weren’t anymore expensive than if you do it when you get there. This is a really fun, relaxing way to see around the island at your own pace, experiencing things you wouldn’t necessarily see on an organised tour. We found the most beautiful beach at the commercial side of the island and a big wooden beach bar with swings, a little slice of paradise! We also came across a little turtle sanctuary that you can visit, which was really cheap!! We really enjoyed this hotel and would return in a heartbeat. The staff work incredibly hard and always have a smile for you! We can’t quite fathom where all the complaints come from in the other reviews, really picky people I guess. However I would agree with some of the other reviews, the lifts are a bit slow though its not the end of the world, who is in a hurry on holiday?!

Stayed here for 2 weeks at the beginning of June. My first impression was that it was a spacious and well kept hotel. Our room was the same, light and airy and very clean. The food was excellent and the choice was fantastic, not enough room in my tummy to sample everything! The pool areas were just as good, plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas, plenty of shade if required. The staff in all bars and restaurants worked so hard and were always happy and friendly.
The lifts were hot and not very efficient but that was just a minor problem. The only other issue I had was with people using the activity pool, lots of the people there seemed to be very drunk and rowdy, I am not against people having a drink and a good time but some people were drunk and offensive , especially as it was near to the childrens pool.
Overall this hotel was fantastic, I would go back without any hesitation.

When we arrived at the hotel, (apart from the weather) the welcome was great! we checked in as our bags were removed from the coach by the porters, and a bar man came straight over and gave us all Pina coladas! (which tasted great!). Our room was lovely and clean, and apart from a rocky table (which was fixed as soon as we reported it) couldn't fault it! The minibar was stocked up every other day, but if you ran out you could always call and ask for more!
The Pools were great! we decided to stay around the quiet pool most of the time as the entertainment team in the main pool started to annoy us. the food in the hotel couldn't be faulted, it was always fresh and tasty with ample choice! of the three a la carte restaurants, our favourite was the Asian, our least favourite was the Mexican and the service in the steak house was appalling. The entertainment in the evening wasn't really to my taste but there was something different on every night. I would definately recommend this hotel to a friend.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor. for amazing views.

We stayed at the Riu Caribe from 25th June until 09th July. Overall the holiday was excellent with just one or two things that took the shine off the 2 weeks. The following is an overview of the holiday-in my opinion that is.
ROOMS- we asked for a high floor and were given room 718, overlooking the quiet pool and the new Riu Peninsula. Large bed, double shower with twin sinks. Freshly decorated in blue and white. Adequate wardrobe and draw space even for a traveller with lots of clothes and accessories. Just need to keep the balcony door shut all the time to keep air con on and to stop condensation building in the room making the floors dangerously slippery.
FOOD- No faults on any level with this in the buffet restaurants. We tried the Mexican and the steakhouse whilst there and found them both very enjoyable. You can book these up to 3 days in advance not just on the morning you wish to go. My tip would be try the soup in the Steakhouse it is delicious.
STAFF-the service these people give is above and beyond expectation. Nothing is too much trouble for them and they are always cheerful. You cannot say one staff member is better than another. They do not expect tips from the guests but in such a poor country it’s hard not to tip them all, especially when you look at all the waste from the hotel, i.e. drinks and food. When tipping don’t forget the cleaners who walk around being almost invisible.
HOTEL-this was beautifully restored and spacious. It had a very modern feel in orange and silver. The three pools are as they say in the Thomson brochure and can be very busy at all times of the day. The beach is clean with plenty of space and safe waters to swim in. There are plenty of sun loungers to go around and many parasols to use. The only issue with the hotel is there is no Air Con in the lobby; this may seem trivial when you first read it but it is a major issue once there in heat of almost 38 degrees. It makes sitting having a drink in the day or in the evening uncomfortable unless you are the very lucky ones to a sit in the breeze, also don’t forget if you use the 90 mins of free WI-FI you are restricted to the lobby so the same issues are present.
HONEYMOONERS BE AWARE- if you’re expecting a fruit basket and Tequila as stated in the Thomson brochure you will be very disappointed. We received 4 strawberries on a plate in our room after I spoke to the rep to find out where they were. After complaining to the reps again along with a second couple on honey moon I was informed the hotel manager would not be giving these out as he did not believe it was necessary as they were freely available in the hotel!!!
REPS- it seems to us and some more guests at the hotel if you’re booking trips out with the reps and spending money they have all the time in the world for you but if you have a question or issue they seen to half listen and then do nothing.

Room Tip: Rooms above level 4 do not hear the lobby noise

i stayed here a couple of years ago before their recent refurbishment and i have to say this time round, huge difference. i loved the last trip so this time round ....highly impressed
the hotel looks fresh, modern and is very clean. i cannot fault anything about this hotel. the staff are all amazing ,friendly, helpful and always cheerful from the receptionist angel , bar manager bebe, waiter lenny in steakhouse to the cleaners who all do an amazing job. the food choices are amazing and there really is something for everyone. you do have to book into the three restaurants (steakhouse, mexican and asian) which i highly reccommend all three but if you dont book, even the standard restaurant is really good and wide variety of choices.
i was impressed that the alcohol on all inclusive was not just the cheap stuff but smirnoff/ absolute and jim beam which are just three of my favourites. and the cocktails.....if its not on the menu they will make it.
obviously you cannot go to cancun and not visit coco bongo which is a fabulous club with a show which is just amazing, but being on holiday for few weeks i did see quite a few of the shows within the hotel on an evening which are organised by the entertainment staff and i was very impressed, they all work so hard and long hours and get it so right everytime.defo going back again next year with thomson. the two reps working for thomson within the hotel were also very helpful especially having them there everyday so they are always onhand. travelling from the uk which is quite a long way i do expect a lot and i can honestly say they exceeded my expectations so hats off to them, they are all hard workers.

Room Tip: all rooms have a fab view of the ocean. the higher the level though,he better for the view.
