Nice place, nice people - not a hotel for families due to the activites being purely for adults.....good food, staff are friendly and and the service is first class

I completely disagree. I went to this hotel with a pretty big group of college kids from Charleston and every one of us loved it! The people were awesome (and hot), drinks were good, hotel was absolutely spotless, the beach was perfect, and the water was absolutely fine. I didn't see any smoke from some dock (? what ?). Anyway, the bars always promised a good crowd and there wasn't a person there unsatisfied.
Another plus is that the best club in Cancun was seriously right across the street (La Boom). For the price you couldn't ask for more! The only downfall is that there are like 50 locals outside the hotel each night trying to sell you anything and everything til about 5AM.. but that's a good thing when you have beer munchies.. papa john's pizza is waiting for you as soon as you pull up. Sooo yeah this place was awesome..
definately recommend!

The staff at the hotel are the best anywhere we have been. The entertainment team of Eric, Ingrid, Emanuelle and Karen, What energy, they are outgoing, always around and always ready for a good time.
(where's my jersey skinny boy). The bar staff of Bibi and Viri are terrific! You won't sit long with an empty glass when these two are working (Surprise!) The restaurant is run by head waiter Mario. This man will make you feel like you are the most important guest in the hotel. (Great Restaurant Mario) In the buffet it is Armundo, what a truly great person he is. Armundo treated us like family while we were there and we will stay in touch with him. (Is it empenadas or empeladas ?) There was still some minor exterior construction going on while we were there, but it didn't detract from the enjoyment. The beach is small, but that just makes it easier to meet people. The beach is groomed every morning and once you arrive on the beach, all you need to do is stand there for two minutes and a lounge chair arrives at your spot. (just remember to thank the guy and give him a few pesos, he works hard and we noticed a few people that didn't thank or tip him) (Rude cheapskates) The amenities are good and rooms are always kept very clean. They are not modern rooms by any definition althought the air conditioning worked and the showers are huge with lots of hot water. The walls are paper thin and you can hear the people in the next room. However if you make good use of the all inclusive alcohol then sleeping won't be a problem, and the rooms should not be used during the day (your on vacation, get out and enjoy yourselves ;-) ) If your rep is with Nolitours, don't expect to see them during your stay. Ours (Genevieve) only works 6-1/2 hours a week and we were not lucky enough to catch her during that time. Don't worry though as the other reps are more than willing to take your money for booking trips etc. Take the bus everywhere, it costs 6 pesos each and the adventure is worth a lot more than that. They run often and 24 hours, We found it the best way to get around. Taxi's are in abundance but bargain the price before you get in. We do not recommend changing currency at the hotel. They offered us 45% less on our money than the money exchange across the street. From some of the past reviews it appears that some people expect a lot more for their money than is reasonable. We found the hotel to be good value for the money and the service is way more than you are paying for. We would recommend this hotel, but if you are going, make sure you tip the staff and treat them well, they work extreamly hard and deserve a lot better than people whistling at them for service and expecting them to kiss their feet (or other extremity) and then not giving them a thank you or a tip. Remember it doesn't matter where you come from or what you do you are no better than anyone else. (Rude people really do suck, and we noticed a few during our stay)

Several of us stayed at Costa Real on our Cancun vacation from Dec 13 to 20, 2003. In my opinion, most of the reviews are accurate in terms of food, service, the hotel's beach area and the on-going construction. In summary, 1. the resort is overall very clean; 2. the service is overall very good (as in any place, some service staff are better than others); 3. the food quality is good - in comparison to other 4/5 star Mexican resorts that we have visited. We also visited its 5 star sister resort, Grand Porto Real in Playa Del Carmen and the food quality is no more superior then what you'll get at Costa Real; 4. the food variety in the main dining facility is very good but the choices for its between-meal snacks are very, very limited. On the contrary, the choices that you can have at Grand Porto Real (or even other 4 star resorts) are exceptional; 5. the hotel's beach area is small and relatively crowded, however, it is clean and well-maintained. There are several nice public beaches along the hotel zone so you can explore these beaches instead, or if you prefer, you can choose a hotel with a much larger beach area; 6. there is still construction going on and it does not look like they are going to be done anytime soon, so do not believe any travel agent that tries to tell you that the construction is done or that they will be done in the next couple of weeks. Having said that however, we were not disturbed by the construction activities (even though our rooms were right next to some major construction activities). We attributed this to two factors - we were not in our room much and the air condition was noisy enough to drown out the construction sounds. The construction workers worked hard and fast from early in the morning to midnight every day. Grand Porto Real is also undergoing some major construction. The resort is 5 minutes by bus to downtown (6 pesos one way ) and buses come by very frequently so there is no need to take a taxi (60 pesos one way). This situation is also true if you wist to travel down the hotel zone (taxi may cost more than 60 pesos, depending on how far you are going down the zone). With your all-inclusive wristband, you can visit the Grand Porto Real at anytime. Do not let any local tour agent convince you that you have to make some sort of special reservations or arrangements. As a whole, I would say that Costa Real is a relatively safe bet in terms of cleanliness, service, and good quality food. It is NOT a large resort, it does NOT have a large beach front, and its decor is modest (both within the rooms as well as in its lobby and other public areas).Hopefully, my comments are helpful in your accommodation planning. Have a great vacation!!

My family and I just returned from a 6 day stay at the Costa Real. The hotel is clean and well kept. The employees, for the most part, are friendly and competent. The rooms are decent except for the thin walls and adjoining doors that allow you to hear everything your neighbors say. Also, I was disappointed to find no bathtub, only a shower. Service at the lobby bar was poor due to understaffing; cocktail napkins were not provided. The biggest disappointment, however, was the food quality. Selection was limited and the quality of the meats, in particular, was low grade. Steaks, for example, were tough similar to what you would expect from a cheap budget steakhouse, not a hotel claiming to be "four star". Desserts were of the store-bought, straight out of the box variety. The two choices of cookies-every day- were like sawdust; this I find hard to accept when there are so many good frozen raw dough, ready-to-bake products on the market. The waiters do a great job. My recommendation to the hotel management: charge more if you must, but by all means- IMPROVE THE FOOD QUALITY.

Just returned...Lots of construction....But was well worth the price...Very large rooms, high ceilings, very clean and comfortable...Not informed very well of amenities but found out quickly enough....Great pool, atmosphere and staff...Front desk staff could be more cordial...Beware of vacation club "talks"...Put a damper on our day but $50 gift certificate to gift shop helped improve our mood....
