Description: This indoor air conditioned restaurant was right next to Walmart's parking lot in Cancun downtown. They offer Mexican food and others. Menu was in English and Spanish. The place was clean, coffee was great and lots of varieties. Price was inexpensive around 300 pesos for full dinner plus appetizer plus drinks excl tips for 2 people. Location was definitely convenient just walking distance from Walmart.

This is a traditional Mexican food chain, it’s kind of famous there, placed next to walmart so it’s really easy to get there from your hotel. The food is REALLY good, and it is the real food Mexicans eat, so it is not like taco bell. We did ejoy it.

I have lived and worked here in Cancun for nearly 20 years. Being listed here on Trip Advisor as Charlie Drew Cancun Tours and Activities(www.charliedrewcancun.com) END OF SELF PROMOTION! I like to recommend common sense places for visitors to try. These days money seems to only go so far and the hotel zone is very expensive. For Americans I would describe El Porton as being like a Howard Johnsons. It is located in the same large parking lot as Walmart and Sam's Club. I have been told that El Porton is owned by the same corporation. I have gone there many times and the food and service is very good. It is a modern restaurant with an open kitchen concept. It is air conditioned. I happen to love their enchiladas. It is not a very quiet place. Mostly booths. It is moderate in price and great if you want to visit Walmart which is open 24/7. El Portone faces Xcaret Avenue where there is a bus stop for you to catch the R-2 bus($8.5-Pesos) for returning back to the hotel zone.

For better or worse, this bright, cheery chain restaurant is where Mexicans eat. I was impressed with the food, which had a variety of dishes from all over Mexico. The daily special (your choice between two mains, and two of six side dishes) is an excellent deal, and my chicken leg/thigh tasted free-range. Just be careful of the garnish on some of the plates, it was sliced habeñero. They even have a kids' menu with Foster Farms corn dogs and home fries cut into shapes, so there is something for kids who don't like Mexican. At this location, the ice is made with purified water, and they have soda in cans, so that is safe to drink. However, the "aguas frescas" are made with local water, so avoid them.

Our server spoke very little English, so bring your phrase book, but she took good care of us.

El Porton is located in the Wal-Mart parking lot. I'd equate it to an "Applebees" or "TGI-Fridays" in the United States... minus the bar. We ate here for lunch and were the only non-Mexicans in the place. The waitresses speak very little English to be sure to use your Spanish or atleast point at things on the menu!
When we were seated we were given Watermelon and Pineapple juices in a carafe. We didn't know you had to pay for these or we would have given them back! The meal overall was average... I got enchiladas with refried beans and it was no better than what you'd get in the States. My husband got some sort of beans, rice and cheese dish with steak and he loved it (can't remember the name).

We both got extremely ill within an hour after eating here! Our illness persisted for 2 weeks and we had to go to the doctor for antibiotics upon returning home. I think this happened because we drank the juices which were watered down. I can't even mention the words "El Porton" without my husband's stomach churning!!
