We stayed the week of Jan 11 to 18th. Transportation by Amstar to resort was quick and easy. Check in was busy but went well with a cold drink offered while in line. We upgraded to an ocean view balcony room and was happy we did. View was great. Room and resort are older but clean and was functional. There are a lot of stairs and only one of two elevators was working. Need to fix that. Pools all are nice and we really enjoyed the adult pool. Angelica very good server. Entertainment with James and Karen was fun and they are very helpful. Do not recommend the Cin Cin resturant but others are fine. Paramour was our favorite. The buffet is adequate but nothing special. We had good service with Miguel? Michael? and Ceasar. The beach is great but while we were there the wind and waves just too strong for ocean swimming. Disappointed with that but not resorts fault. In summary we would go back again for right price but resort needs work on the pysical facility to get to AMresorts standards but the service was very good.

My wife and I have been to several UVC resorts and this one was our first huge disappointment. There were a lot of little things that irritated us during the entire week from the mini bar not being stocked daily (not even the water), getting forgotten by the waiter on the beach, having no "spicy" in our spicy tuna sushi roll because they ran out of sauce (why even serve it?), to room service messing up our order on three separate occasions (seriously, how do you screw up a grilled cheese sandwich - twice?!).

Regarding the restaurants, I have to say we always enjoyed breakfast at Carnival restaurant. The omelette lady was incredible. But for dinner, we were only able to go to the French restaurant which was just ok, and another place called Cin Cin where the food was mediocre to downright horrible. The bouillabaisse was inedible and the rice pudding we waited for over 2 hours to conclude with was certainly not worth the wait. Also, the hostess was turning people away when you could clearly see there were at least six empty tables inside the restaurant and the service was extremely slow even though the place was empty. The experience was horrible and we knew we wouldn't be back that week since it was only Tuesday. Unfortunately we weren't able to go to any other restaurants for the rest of the week because that night my wife got food poisoning. Great.

As if my wife getting sick wasn't enough, we had an even bigger problem. We chose to upgrade after the first night to a room with a balcony and paid $180 to do so. Unfortunately the sliding door rattled all night long and kept us up and the bed gave us both backaches. We tried to make the best of it and get through it but by Thursday we were exhausted and my wife just wanted to go home. We complained to the concierge and they moved us to another room where the door was better but there was still noise (no improvement on the bed). When we told the UVC guy who checked us in, he admitted that the concierge said to him "they're not going to get a better room because all the windows are bad here". And it's true. The place needs a huge renovation where all the windows and doors need to be replaced among several other things.

We are not pretentious, entitled people however we did pay a lot of money for a vacation where there were problems everywhere you turned. They promise you luxury and that was far from what we received.

I really liked the hotel! BEACH, LOCATION AND FOOD ARE AMAZING! (Please see pros section after cons).

The reasons why I am giving 3 stars are:
1) LIFEGUARD who did not allow to swim in the ocean whereas other lifeguards at nearby hotels allowed to do so... the waves were the same at all nearby hotels :) He just did not want to work :) The whole point was to swim in the ocean, not swimming pool...
2) It was DANGEROUS to swim in the ocean because of crazy seadoos that were almost running over your head :(
3) Slow coffee service in the morning :(
4) not enough entertainment.

BUT PROS are:
1) most of the employees are AMAZING;
2) beautiful beach and convenient location;
3) tasty food
4) you don't need a reservation to go to restaurants

Judy & I haven't been to Cancun in 17 years. We were pleasantly surprised that things only got better. Hotel staff was wonderful. Alex (pool attendant) and Victor (pool bar supervisor) were phenomenal. The restaurants we visited exceeded our expectations. "Carnival" (breakfast buffet), "Tamarindo" (Mexican cuisine), "Capers" (Italian cuisine) and "Barefoot Grill" (poolside burgers, hot dogs, philly cheese steaks, all served with fries) were very consistent. Better than the restaurants we frequent at home with the same cuisines. We were fortunate enough to have a room with a patio and ocean view. I am told the hotel is 35 years old but it is maintained quite well. We were thrilled with the quality of our room, the lobby, the pool and all the restaurants we visited. Thank-you Now Emerald Cancun. We will return. Dennis R and Judy K.
