“Wonderful Vacation Experience”
Reviewed April 4, 2013

We stayed for one week in a studio room with 2 double beds (and a murphy bed in the living room if you wanted it) on the 8th floor with a beautiful view and spacious balcony. The kitchen had a fridge, microwave, toaster & coffee maker and seating for 4 people. The bathroom was all marble and beautiful. We liked the walk in closet area between the bedroom and bathroom which had a dresser, hangers and a safe deposit box. The first day there, we had trouble with the safe (it kept beeping and we couldn't open it), we called downstairs & the maintenance man was there within 10 minutes to reset it. The room had central air, but it was cool enough at night to have the slider open and the wind blowing- listening to the ocean and not being bothered at all by bugs. We are avid walkers, so every morning we walked (toward the direction of the high rise hotels) on the walking path to go to the little grocery store (approx a 2 mile walk there) to pick up a few groceries for breakfast or lunch. You can also take the bus downtown to the grocery store or to Walmart for a few pesos or take a taxi. The beach was clean and there were plenty of tiki huts and umbrellas for shade. The water was warm and calm. There is plenty to watch with the boat traffic, jet skis, banana boat rides, and people walking the beach selling mangos, doughnuts, cotton candy etc. There is also a tiki hut with 4 hammocks to relax under. We had an issue where my boyfriend broke a tooth and we needed to find a dentist. The concierge found us an employee who referred us to his dentist- he put us in a taxi and gave the taxi driver instructions. The tooth was fixed and in less than 2 hours we were back at the beach! We had the breakfast buffet once and also had the buffet for dinner a few times which was delicious. The outdoor grill served cheeseburgers & hot dogs & fries, nachos etc which hit the spot. There were also alot of pool activities (water balloon fights, beach bingo) We also went to the little restaurant next door which was spectacular. We took the bus to the "Island" or "Isles" to go shopping and walk around. My only complaint is that when you arrive, your bags are held at the door and you are seated to 'talk' to a salesperson. I was certainly not in the mood for those shenanigans as I was hungry, overtired, hot & sweaty (dressed in long sleeves), had a headache, was kinda shaky from not eating & had been travelling for over 12 hours. Once the woman realized we were already owners & didn't want to upgrade at all, she gave us meal & drink coupons & we were allowed to go to our room. For the rest of the week, the employees were friendly, helpful and bent over backwards to make sure our stay was wonderful. I can't wait to go back.

The staff treated us very unpleasant and gave us wrong information after which they chased us and a guest off of the beach and made no apologies for it. They questioned us when walking in with our hotel bands showing that we were guests at the hotel and gave us a hard time to enter after we had already paid. We noticed that people who came with us that looked liked tourist were not questions but others that looked like locals with bands on were heavily harassed.

The rooms were okay, nothing to rave about and the beach we did not get to experience fully because of being escorted off what they claim is a public beech.

I would never stay here again or recommend for anyone to stay there. The staff were completely rude when talking and us explaining to them we were given wrong information and we were asked to leave.

Came back from 1 week Timeshare exchange: I was very apprehensive after reading all the negative reviews, but enjoyed trip tremendously! Arrived at hotel - got our free drink while waiting for representative - talked for about 20 min and agreed to do free breakfast and "upgrade chat". Room was as we remembered from 2007 - outdated but everything was very clean and in working order. Lovely view, hot showers, nice firm bed. We declined the upgrade - thought it was too expensive for what we already have - beautiful beach and view, friendly attentive staff, clean and working facility . Enjoyed the gym, pizza and drinks on beach, breakfast and location of Casa Maya

We stayed 2 nights in a Studio room with 2 double beds. Room had a small fridge, toaster, microwave and coffee maker. The hotel is in a good location with a great beach, older but still a nice place to stay.

This is a great resort for families that don't want to be in heart of the hotel district. The room was spacious, great pool area, fabulous beach, shallow beach swimming and every part of the hotel (inside and out) was exceptionally clean. The staff was very friendly and helpful. There were lots of ongoing activities around the pool and beach area for kids and adults. One small negative comment was that they didn't change USD for pesos but instead suggested that we pay USD at the small on-site convenience store who would in turn give us change in pesos. They have an ATM on site but I tried several times to withdraw money from my bank account and from my credit card without success.

We had breakfasts in our rooms and took advantage of the on-site buffet for most lunches and suppers. Tip: On Saturdays and Sundays, you can purchase discount buffet coupons. The regular price for the buffet is 170 pesos (half price for kids) but they sell the coupons for 130 pesos (a nimum purchase of 6 is required). This was a big savings for us and we wished we would have purchased more coupons. They also sell a drink package. The regular price for 10 drinks is 650 pesos but the drink package is 390 pesos. The food at the buffet is good as are other items on their menu. They make good pizza on-site but don't expect to be eating "Domino's" style pizza. The crust is very thin and seemed to taste more like a tortilla or pita bread.

The Italian restaurant next door is right on the beach, affordable and a nice change of pace from the buffet at Casa Maya. If you are facing the ocean, the restaurant is a 5 minute walk to your right. The food was very good but the service is very slow.

We took the bus to Walmart to purchase our breakfast and snack items. Tip: Bring your reusable shopping bags from home. Warning: They don't sell bagels (I actually brought some with me from home) nor do they sell coffee cream (I found that very strange). They do sell individually packaged coffee cream substitute containers but we chose to purchase whipping cream and mixed it with 2% milk. The bus stop is a short walk from the hotel and the cost is 8.50 pesos per person each way and takes about 10 minutes. Ask the bus driver to tell you when he reaches the Walmart. The bus stops in front of a booth called "Excellence Tours" where someone will likely greet you and invite in to the booth to purchase tours or to sign up to attend a "talk". We stopped in and made one good and one bad decision. Good decision: Joanna Sanchez sold us a tour to Xcaret for $112 USD (the hotel was selling this for $139 USD). Bad decision: She convinced us to go to a "Vida Vacations" talk at the Hotel Mayan Palace in exchange for $50 USD and $300 worth of free tours. She assured us that this wasn't a "timeshare talk" and that it would only take 45 minutes of our time. We were picked up at our hotel at 7:30am and didn't return until 2:30pm - what a wasted day. This was in fact the highest sales pressure tactic I have ever witnessed - having to say no to 5 sales people in a row before they let us leave. One guy was very rude and insulting that we didn't have a few thousand dollars to put down on this investment. Stay clear away from this so called "45 minute talk".

You can also take a bus (R1 or R2) from Casa Maya to the heart of the hotel district which is in the opposite direction. This is where you will find Carlos and Chalie's, Senior Frogs, Hard Rock Café, Coco Bongo, Planet Hollywood...

If you take a tour and the agent gives you a coupon for a free t-shirt at Senor Frogs, be aware that you have to purchase a meal before you get your free t-shirt. This information is not provided when the coupon is issued - we only learned about it once we showed up to collect our free shirts. In the end, we decided against the meal and free shirt.

I highly recommend the following tours: Xcaret, Xel-Ha and the Captain Hook Pirate Adventure. Although the Pirate Adventure seemed more like a party boat/booze cruise, my kids (ages 5 and 7) had a blast and said that it was their favorite part of the vacation.

We traded our timeshare for a week on fairly short notice because we wanted to go someplace warm. We did not want to cook so we enjoyed the breakfast buffet every morning and would go to the outdoor dining in the evening. We only had a motel room but it had a small fridge and microwave. When requested they brought us dishes and silverware so that we were able to make snacks for lunch. We also went to Walmart and got our own alcohol. We stayed in the second building which had its own separate pool and beach area which was quieter. We didn't have to listen to someone else's music, etc. the beach was nice but if you like walking a long way on the beach you may want to go out to the hotel zone for uninterrupted beach walking. The staff were very pleasant and courteous. When we first arrived they steered us to the timeshare representative. They gave us a free drink and the guy then tried to talk to us about setting up a timeshare tour. We explained that we already had one and did not wish another. He tried again but was willing to understand that we were not interested in their tour. But it is a good thing we listened because he was helpful and showed us to our room and gave us coupons that we used to buy our breakfast. We watched lots of people being "herded" through the breakfast tours but if you politely said you were not interested they left you alone. We had a fantastic getaway to Casa Maya and would go back there.

I stayed at casa maya for 1 week in mid March and it was overall a very enjoyable experience. The rooms were clean and the housekeeping staff was excellent, they even did our dishes on a few occasions. I was very impressed. The staff at the front desk and the convenience store were also quite friendly, as were the bartenders and activities planners. One of the activities planners that worked with the Cancun Sailing company helped me get a great price on a sailing trip to Isla Mujeres for my friends and I. The happy hour deal was awesome as well, 6-10 PM is buy one drink get one free. There was an incident with our towels that was swiftly cleared up be the management and security. Some "spring breakers" though it would be clever to take our towels without permission, and at 50 dollars a towel for lost towels I was quite concerned. The management heard my case and the towels were found, needless to say I was angry but to see the management go out of their way to help was very nice. There are two bus stops in easy walking distance of the hotel as well. Overall the crowd was older here, I was one of few 20-25 year old visitors.

Room Tip: The 2 bedroom suite has a nice balcony with marble floors and a full kitchen. The master bedroom is...
