Traveled Feb. 23-28. This was our first time in Cancun and 2nd all-inclusive vacation. We found that you could make this resort a very good time if you work at it a little. Here are our tips:

The "Grand" (or black bracelet) is a must, so that you have full restaurant options. We enjoyed the Brazilian steakhouse, the Spanish tapas, Cocoa over the beach for seafood lunch (loved the fish ceviche and not the shrimp cocktail), and the sushi bar for a later night snack (but we made sure to order only cooked fish). Dos Lunas was also o.k., the spinach stuffed chicken was great!

We were not impressed with the buffet, or the bartenders, and did not find any traditional Mexican food to enjoy (except some guacamole from room service). We found the bartenders best at serving beer, or simple mixed drinks like a whiskey and coke. The margaritas we had were not good, nor the martinis, or other "tropical" drinks we expected to have. Dos Equis is the only beer, other than Sol cans in the mini bar.

Their were mostly only hamburgers and popcorn carts for snacks, and dinner didn't start until 6:30. We were very disappointed with the limited restaurant and bar hours. There were several times I wanted a snack or a drink and nothing close by was "open". swim up bars close WAY too early.

The grounds were beautiful and kept up very well. Our room was clean, and bathroom felt nice. We were in the main building. Not fancy, but quite acceptable.

The beach was very beautiful and large with plenty of lounge chairs and beds if you get to the beach between 7-9am. Be careful because people will steal your towels or move them. The water was rough, but we enjoyed swimming in the waves and floating in the surf!

Entertainment was good, if you can find the schedule, which was not easy for us. The latin/caribbean show in the up&down disco was Awesome, like a front row on Dancing with the Stars! The fire show in the main lobby was also pretty cool. We missed the foam party in the disco, but heard it smelled of puke and urine. Coyote Loco had a GREAT band for 70's and 80's covers, then switched to DJ playing pop and dance hits. There is a table for guests to dance on and girls dancing on the bar (for tips).

Our travel company was Olympus tours, and they really try to sell you excursions, you can get the same trips by the pool for the same prices. I pre-booked an excursion for "10% off" when we bought through Cheap Caribbean, and it was not discounted but the same price. Wait until you get there and then choose the best excursions for you when you know what you want.

Service was not great. You could get what you needed, but the resort staff was not going out of their way to help you.

Most people at this resort were in their late teens or early twenties it seemed, with some families, and some couples. Lots of singles, packs of guys. Not uncommon to see someone passed out or puking. But we loved the beach, enjoyed the entertainment, found some really good food, and took fun excursions to go zip-lining, see Mayan ruins, and swim in cenotes. it's a big resort with lots of choices if you take the time to explore.

Room Tip: Main building was nice. Party buildings were building1 & 2 - we avoided that whole area.

Our goal for this trip was to relax and unwind and we certainly accomplished that. I had never stayed at an all-inclusive resort and was very impressed with the ease of walking into restaurants and getting drinks anywhere we happened to be. We enjoyed all the different types of restaurants, especially the Brazilian. The International Buffet was wonderful for breakfast and we had lunch at the seafood, sushi, and Mediterranean restaurants, which were all very good. They all had a lot of good, healthy choices and we never felt like we overate. The waitstaff was incredibly helpful and friendly. They appeared at the table as soon as we had an empty plate or glass and asked what else they could get for us, as they removed the used items.

We never had a problem finding seats at the pool or the beach and even though my daughter wanted as much sun as possible and I wanted to limit my time in the sun, we were able to find seats next to each other, where we both could accommodate our needs. Entertainers came around the pool frequently and were fun to watch. There was a "swim-up" bar but the waitresses came around often enough. One afternoon, they brought out a huge tray of cups of cut-up fruit. The area of the pool where we sat, was quiet and we found that the same people chose to sit there each day so we could smile and wave and the atmosphere was very pleasant.

Our room was in the #3 building and we found it very convenient to everything that we wanted to do. It was quiet and comfortable.

My wife and I stay four times a year at this resort. As you can imagine we normally enjoy our stays. Our most recent stay,jan.25-jan.31,not so much. The food at ibezza the buffet restaurant was not good. The dinner sit down restaurants had a very limited menue and each required reservations. The rooms were not renovated just freshly painted. Not saying we won't return, just not sure.

Another time we have appreciated the reviews. We noticed if we read enough reviews, taking into account the age group, season, and other factors, and ignore to some degree the extreme ones on both sides, we can get a pretty clear picture. The only thing we have not been prepared to face was quite pushy “orientation” campaign.
While at the Check-In we were approached by a woman with Oasis Plus badge. She told us she would show us the resort. We thought she was going to escort us to the room but it was not a case. She invited us to a table, asked a bunch of questions and invited us to an information session during next day breakfast. As we had just arrived and the property seemed vast, we thought we could get familiar with the resort. 90 minutes seemed to be little much to cut from just 3 full days, but we were so anxious to drop our suitcases and go to the beach as soon as possible that we agreed for the session. It turned to be one of those time share sells, except it was Oasis membership. It lasted 3 hours although we told we were not going to buy anything; last manager was pretty aggressive. Looking back I see the idea to sell people the resort membership for years before they have a chance to explore it is not bad, as some people (like us) would not commit to Oasis for years after at least a day in the resort.
This was our first time in Mexico and at all-inclusive resort, so not much to compare to.
As people have already mentioned, the property is not brand new and looks for renovation. Few things in our room to mention: AC thermostat did not work (constant flow of cold air), water in the shower had swampy smell and was difficult to regulate; one mattress had a significant sag. The room sometimes was cleaned in late afternoon what did not give a feeling of privacy
Staff is pretty friendly, everybody seems to try to help but some requests had to be repeated several times before they were addressed.
I guess, we just got lucky to get to a good building, # 3. This is the one close to beach on the right part of the resort if you face the ocean. This part is much quieter than the left one. But if you are looking for loud music, late parties, etc. - ask for the other side.
Another thing to mention is the lack of shade on the beach. There are very few straw shade umbrellas.
The see was very rough, red flags on the beach during our stay. I am just wondering if it is ever calm enough to swim.
The food was pretty good; very good at Mexican gourmet, Italian and Brazilian Steakhouse.
From personal experience: if you did not get the reservation - try walking in, you may get a table.
Bars were Ok, no mojito though ;-)

We traveled to the Grand Oasis for one week through Sunwing. Feb 8 2012. Check in was a hassle as we were redirected to a few places and when we were checked in it wasnt even at the front desk. We were put into the "Sunwing" building on the party side. There was a lot of night time noise and drunk yelling young adults all hours of the night. The room was comparable to a 2 star. No alarm clock, no patio chairs,no coffee maker and REALLY outdated. We had requested a king bed and as a couple were given two double beds. We did change rooms to the 3000 building on the other side and it was somewhat better.
Grounds were well kept.Service was hit and miss but some of the staff would remember us from day to day. (tipping didnt seem to make a difference)
Sushi was good even though it took us over an hour to get the food. Overall restarants on the Grand side were much better. I recomend the market place for breakfast.
There was plenty of entertainment all around the resort.
Overall it was a good resort. We have traveled to the same area numerous times over the last 10 years and always stay at different resorts. I would rate it overall 6 out of 10. I would go back if there was a good price on it.

Room Tip: Keep to the grand side for less noise

We spent a terrific week at the Grand Oasis in 2005. So, we brought our entire family back this year. A lot has changed. The resort caters to more kids, rooms have not aged well, and service has declined. It's still a good value. Everyone had a very good time, but it just wasn't "special." Good value for big group!

Room Tip: Grand Oasis ocean front class is the way to go.

We just got back from our first stay at this resort (Ocean-Front room through Nolitours), and although we had a good vacation overall, we will most likely never go back to this resort.

The Good

- Food: The buffets had great selection and the food was tasty. The A La Cartes were equally as good with the added bonus of not needing a reservation for most of them (specifically the steak-house and sushi restaurant, which were awesome). Some of them were also open for lunch.

- Location: a scenic 5-minute, $1 bus ride to the clubs and high-end shopping in Cancun

- Beach: The beach was incredible... soft sand in and out of the water, and water was shallow enough to walk out about 150ft.

The Bad

Having booked the "Grand" Oasis, "Ocean Front" package at a 4.5 star resort, we expected something a little nicer than we got. The room was small, old, falling apart, and we had to deal the following:
- we were put at the end of the 3000 building (room 3201), right next to some sort of engine-house that ran ALL THE TIME! It was very loud in the room, and a lot worse when sitting on balcony trying enjoy the ocean view
- our sliding patio door shook and howled when it got windy, which was almost every night we were there
- the A/C unit would cut out at night and it would get uncomfortably hot in the room
- we had a cockroach problem, and from what we overheard, so did some other rooms in the same building
- Between the noise and heat in our room, we barely had any sleep the entire week.
- Our cold water taps (both sinks and tubs) were letting out nothing but scalding hot water the last day

The UGLY

By far, the biggest disappointment of our vacation (and the main reason behind this 2-star rating) came from the front-desk and so-called "Oasis-Plus" staff. They were ABSOLUTELY USELESS. Any time we went to them for assistance with one of the many problems with our room, we were directed to some other line, department, or person where we'd have to explain the issue over and over again. It seemed to be the "system" they had for dealing with guests... stall/ignore them until they go away. On multiple occasions, we spent HOURS trying to get issues resolved with nothing to show for it but a lot of wasted time and unimaginable frustration.

By the end of our trip, we gave up on them completely and just put up with what our room had to offer... including the total loss of cold water to our room our last day there. We took our last showers there under scalding hot water... which felt GREAT on the sunburns. During check-out, we informed the front-desk about it, and the agent's response was for us to go talk to the maintenance staff... even after we had checked out. That pretty much said it all.

Room Tip: Spend the extra money and get a room in the main pyramid. The ocean-front rooms are old and things...
