“Great location and service, so-so food and rooms”
Reviewed January 2, 2011

This was our second time to Cancun so we only had one other resort to compare with. The location was excellent with an awesome beach that had big waves. There were 3 nice shopping malls within walking distance. We don't consider our family high class with a need to be pampered. When we checked in we received two rooms on different floors, and we requested to have rooms next to each other and were willingly given adjoined, ocean view rooms with balconies. The rooms were average and nothing fancy. We were on the fifth floor of the north tower (above the theater) and we could hear the noise from the shows every night. The walls were very thin, we heard blow dryers and doors closing throughout the day and night. The rooms were clean besides the stained mattress pads and towels. Mattress pads can be found between the matress and box spring. We put them on top of the mattress and it made the hard beds more comfortable. The safes were old but they did the job. They were worth the $2 a day fee. The mini fridge was stocked daily with pop, water, beer, and snacks. We were disappointed to find out this resort didn't offer towel art on the beds (It was one of our favorite parts of our last trip to Cancun). With the first use of the shower it took almost a half an hour to get warm water. In the showers after this it was very hard to adjust the water temp. In one of our rooms the volume wasn't able to be changed on the t.v. (by the remote or on the actual t.v.). The AC worked well but it was hard to use because the markings were worn off. We might not have focused on all the little conditions of the room but the weather was poor so we spent more time than expected in the rooms. The pools were clean, but rather cold. This also wouldn't have been a big concern with warmer weather. The food was average. There wasn't alot of variety. Our favorite resturaunt was the one that was pool side, offering burgers and fries. We didn't visit any of the resturaunts that required reservations. We found it inconvienent to schedule meals while on vacation. So we were only able to eat supper at the buffet by the lobby. Overall all the workers were GREAT. We recieved wonderful service. It was nice being in a smaller resort where the staff recognized their guests. This resort was fine overall, but we would like somewhere alittle nicer. So our next visit will probably be to a different resort. Also we would recommend Senor Frogs, but NOT Margaritaville or Hooters. Market 28 has great prices, but avoid Coral Negril (very pushy and overpriced). Plaza Kukucalan, Flamingo Mall, and La isla Mall also have some nice souvenir shops.

Hotel Tucancun is in a great location on the best part of the beach in Cancun with amazing white silky sand and pale blue ocean, bordering on paradise absolutely breathtaking. Sea good for boogie boards and surfing, the waves vary. A clean hotel, I never saw one crawlie whilst there staff always cleaning. Rooms massive with iron.ironing board, hairdryer and toiletries provided. Loads of clean topwels and sheets changed most days king size comfy bed.
GREAT FOR FAMALIES AND THE WRINKLIES CAN GO UP ON THE TERRACE TO GET AWAY FROM THE KIDS AS THERE ARE 3 SEPARATE POOL AREAS
Downside is that the food is of a 3 star qaulity and very Mexican in style so no lobster but 4 resturants who cook a good T bone steak. (over the road is a massive mall with upstairs food court for Burger King and other fast foods.Shopping is designer here so expensive get the same in marker 28 off the locals for a fraction).
No English newspapers in hotel and hard to find anywhere else. Staff Ok some a little ignorant but thats a minority the rest will bend over backwards.. The receptionist will try to give you the noisy back rooms near generator so make sure you request ocean view. The bungalows are great with weddings on the beach some days and every day and night a very good animation team. Bar open ALL DAY AND ALL NIGHT AS FULLY INCLUSIVE so if its the lobster you want think on, you can buy that down the road.

I recently took my mother -who is chronicaly ill, on a much need vacation to this resort. When we got there, we were greeted nicely, enjoyed the beautiful view, checked in, and then approached by a "information specialist." Our flight was very late and we were very tired and did not take the time to talk to them at this point but wondered why they were so pushy. Anyways, that was just the begining....these "information specialist in disguise " are really time share sales people. They harassed us the entire trip, waiting outside the restaurant, meeting us coming back from the beach, phoned our room, and even approached us at the pool. We had to get the manager involved on several occasions, who was very kind and did approach the manager of the info specialist. Beware- these are not employees of the hotel, the will talk about tours and excursions but cannot sell them to you, and are extremely pushy. Secoro (spelling) was the most annoying of them all. Steer clear of her especially. We had one who was very friendly and actually enjoyed talking to her until we found out the true motives---to get us on a tour of another resort. These people are not paid by the resort but make money by giving these tours of another resort.

Our trip was a very short one ( 4 days and three nights ) and I can truly say we did not enjoy our trip. Not because of the resort, the food, the staff, or the amenities - those were all great! What runined the trip was the pushy misleading tactics of the time share sales people. Barcelo should be aware that these guys are giving them a bad name!

I must add, the manager did do all he could to help, short of asking the timeshare sales people to leave. However, by the time he got involved, our trip was over, it was time to go home, and we ended up not having as good a trip as it could of been.

This all inclusive resort was wonderful. They have a great food selection including Mexican restaurant, buffet, Spanish restaurant, and even a dinner theater. The room were nice. I think this is a value. The beach was beautiful and the pool were clean - and LOTS of them. They have an AWESOME activities director whom would keep you busy every minute of the day if you wanted to be busy! The numerous bars throughout the resort had excellent bartenders - very friendly and courteous. They had a nice selection of excursions as well. The resort is very close to La Isla mall and the flea market, and there is a mall right across the street as well. Coca Bongo is just a short bus-ride away as well. I would recommend this resort.

Wow! I was a little nervous about Mexico in December... it's hard to imagine warmth when it's below zero! But we had a great time! The beaches were far from crowded- the ocean was perfect! We had such great service when we were there- the staff is wonderful. Antonio and Guillermo are the best bartenders ever... Alejandro is THE waiter.... and I can't say enough about Consuelo! She is my favorite! Wherever Consuelo is working, you want to be there. The hotel is very clean, the food is great, and I just can't say enough about how well we were treated! (Well, Francisco is a bit grouchy, but he does a really cool magic trick) Rick down at the Aqua center is super nice and takes great care of you. It's right next to the mall, and just a quick bus ride to anywhere you want! Great great vacation! The only wish I had was for a hot tub. The evenings were perfect for it! And we did use the mattress pads (find them between the mattress and the box springs) we actually took the pad off of the other double bed and layered them as the mattresses were slightly uncomfortable for me. My husband was fine, but he likes a firm mattress. Overall I'd love to go back, we had a fantastic time.

This was our 6th time to this resort in the past 8 years! The staff still makes this 3 ½ star all inclusive resort what it is today from the housekeepers to the managers of the resort. We would like to give a special thank you to Marta at the front desk, Angel & Daniel from the activity team and Luis at the front door for changing our room selection to a beautiful room in the North Tower overlooking the activity pool. Once again for the price this resort is worth every penny!! My only negative comment this trip is the water pressure controls are terrible in the North Tower and the Central & South Tower are much better in my opinion!!

Check In & Room – We arrived at little after lunch and we received an oceanview room in the central tower with double beds. We ask Marta at the front desk if we could be moved to a room with a king bed and she indicated to us we could do that the next morning. So we took our room with the double beds for one night. We did receive a really nice room the next day in the North Tower (room 2044) overlooking the activity pool with a king bed. The only negative for being on the second floor is that you are above the theater and there was a private party there until 1:30 in the morning playing music that you could hear. I have read some past reviews about the front desk personal not being accommodating but we thought they were very happy to try to accommodate our requests for a room with a king bed. The room itself was clean and basic and we requested two additional pillows and they arrived 20 minutes after our request. The rooms have a key lock safe in the closet, stocked mini refrigerator (coke products, Medelo beer, bottled water and a few snacks (peanuts and wafer bars), coffee maker, iron, alarm clock radio, in shower soap/shampoo/conditioner dispenser and good assortment of bath, body, face towels. For some reason look between your box spring and mattress and there might be a pillow top mattress pad. We took it from there and put it on the top of the mattress and it made a big difference. The resort was only 35-40% occupied and they closed the South Tower for maintenance before the high season started in January.

Restaurants/Food/Drinks – During our entire stay they had a least one of the dinner ala cartes open each night. You have a choice between Mexican and Seafood/Spanish. We felt that both were a nice change from the nightly buffet. Breakfast is typical - eggs to order, meats, fruits, side dishes but no bacon at all on breakfast sausage. You can order a bloody mary or mimosas. Lunch you have two buffet choices the one by the lobby (no swim suits) or the pool buffet that is next to pool #1. Both had a good assortment of food (a couple of main dishes, hamburgers, hot dogs, salad, meats, cheese and fruits. We ate at the pool restaurant each day. The only downfall with lunch is that you can not bring food onto the beach or pool area. They do have a nightly buffets in the theater for a few of the shows (Mexican, Circus, etc…). There are 5 bars at the resort each pool has a bar (3), lobby bar (opens at 4:00) and theater bar (opens at 7:00). They had two types of beer on type (XXX and Medelo dark). No bottle beer!! They did have a few know liquor bottles Early Times, Barcidi, Smirnoff. One of our favorite drinks was the Bloody Creaser’s and Mai Tai’s…… The lobby bar did have breakfast snacks in the morning (donuts, juices, yogurt) and late night (nachos, finger sandwiches, desserts).

Pools/Beach – As I indicated above there are three pools, activity pool (#3) with swim up bar and music; main pool (#1)with built in loungers and the infinity pool (#2). The water was cold but it was refreshing after being in the sun all day. The activity pool is where the activity staff hangs out and teaches stretching, aerobics, volleyball, silly games, bingo, and trivia each day.

We did take a day trip to Isla Mujeres and toured the island on golf carts ($40 for a day). We took the bus to the ferry dock by the RIU Caribe. The cost of the round trip ticket was $15. The mall across the street from the Tucancun lost a few shops but we still went and did our tequila tasting and bought a few gifts for the family.

Overall we had a great time at Tucancun and it was great to see all of our TA friends again from Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri and Florida.

Check in - Fine, no issues. Not quick or slow, no queues, no time share sell, not rude or over bearing.
Room - Basic but somfortable. TV (not many channels, but I personally dont go away to watch TV!), Shower (temp. kept fluctating but didn't ruin my holiday), sink area (spacious, large mirror, plug at side, coffee area at side with ice bucket & condiments & glasses), reasonable size balcony - had a lagoon view, pleasant enough for sunsets! (enough space for two people to sit on & use to chill out with a drink), 2 bedside tables, mini bar (re-stocked daily with 4x beers, 2x bags of nuts, 2x wafer & chocolate bars, fantax1, waterx2, colax2, diet cola x2, sprite x2 & good size wardrobe with iron, extra pillows, blankets & ironing board....room was CLEAN.... nothing fancy but again I dont go away to use room for much apart from changing/sleeping & storing clothes in!
Hotel - 3 pools, all cold but re-freshing after sunbathing, main one has loungers built into it, and seems to be one which families use, middle pool was quiet for sunbathing & a quick dip, smallest pool was 'party pool' entertainment staff did bingo/quiz/water sports/aqua aerobics etc here, and played music, - all three pools had bars next to them.
Food - choices....
Brekfast - cereals, juices, coldmeats, cheese, fruit, sausages, hashbrowns, spicy dishes, salad, yoghurts, pancakes & eggs & omlettes to order, coffee, tea, bread, toast, sweet pasties
Lunch - cold meats, salad, fruit, cakes, ice cream, hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, meat dishes x 2-3, crispy tortillas/nachos, chilli, cheese sauce, soups, bread & pasta - (previous comments about burgers not cooked or half cooked....they are thick burgers and hot dogs so they half cooekd them, kept them warm and completed cooking them to order - would have taken too long to freshlycook to order, and would have gone hard if fully cooked and left out - burgers were given on eve buffet but even if they were from lunch buffet they were a little firm and dry but fine if you wanted a midnight snack!!)
Eve meal - meat dishes x 3-4, salads, pasta x2, tacos, fajhitas, cold meats & cheese, cakes, ice cream, bread, soups x2, crispy tortillas/nachos
Midnight buffet - crispy tortillas/nachos, chilli, cheese sauce, burgers, hot dogs, cold salads, sandwiches
None of the food was piping hot, but wasnt a worry as it is a buffet, and generally buffets are not piping hot. Neither my husband or I were ill and ate most dishes/meals.
A la Carte - only did mexican, twice, great choice, tasty and no extra to pay!

Location - Good...opposite the Luxury Avenue (for Mexican restaurants, Ruth Chris steak house & shops - great for cheap beauty products-2 mins walk), walking distance to La Isla (for Johnny Rockets, Planet Hollywood & many shops-20 mins), Flamigo Malls (for a few shops Bubba Gumps/margaritaville - 10 mins) buses available to all malls, and downtown for clubs/senor frogs.
My only personalised comment would be that this is not the cheapest hotel nor the most expensive....if you pay more, you get more from hotels...I WOULD stay here again, good price £2120 for 2 for 2 weeks 22/11/10, all inclusive, and we planned to eat out 3-4 times only, which we did, baring this in mind we would choose this hotel again as its location waas good, food was ok, and it was clean & comfortable for the deal we got.
