“Did we stay at the same hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 6, 2013

This is our 11th all inclusive vacation and it was one of our best. After reading some of the reviews on Trip Advisor, we wonder if we stayed at the same place as the people that gave this resort such dismal reviews. We travelled with our two teenage daughters (15 & 18) for 11 days over Christmas and New Years; everyone had a great time. Here is our take on the resort:

Check In: There were a couple of families ahead of us so it took a bit of time to check in, not unusual when checking in at any hotel. We have nothing to complain about there.

Restaurants: We felt this was among the best all-inclusive fare we have had. Last year we stayed at the resort now rated on Trip Advisor as number 10 in Cancun and felt the food there wasn’t worthy of the hotel’s 4.5 star rating – this resort had much better food and the Barcelo Tucancun Beach has a 4 star rating. Most of the staff at the restaurants were fantastic, at the Mallorca, Delmy, Carlos, Cindy and Obdulia; at the Mexico Lindo, Ernesto was amazing and unfortunately we can’t remember our waiters name at Don Quijote, he was also great. The food at these restaurants was fantastic. The La Claraboya was buffet for breakfast and lunch, they had one rude waitress during the day. We never ate there at night, it is a seafood restaurant at night. The service at this restaurant was not nearly as good as the others for the breakfasts/lunches we ate there. The hamburgers they made at lunch were very good.

Bars: There are several bars situated throughout the resort, we always tip so always received great service from all of them. Not the highest quality liquor we have seen but if you want to pay extra, you can get the good stuff.

Room: The beds were very comfortable, far better than the resort we stayed at last year (Number 10 on Trip Advisor). Our maid was very good as well, she always made sure we had enough towels; room was very clean. We had some sort of towel art every day in our bathroom. We had a corner ocean front room with wrap around corner balcony; view was amazing. We stayed in the South Tower, we had no trouble with our shower however people that we met at the resort who were staying the in North Tower had trouble with water temperatures fluctuating during their showers – would go from scalding hot to freezing cold and back again. We would not have been impressed had we had that happen to us; thankfully we had a great room with constant water temperature.

Activities: You can be as active or dormant as you want – we chose to be active most of the time. Stretching, beach volleyball, water polo, pool volleyball, water aerobics, ping pong, darts and bingo kept us going. We would never dream of playing bingo at home but for some reason when we are on these vacations we look forward to the 2:00 bingo games… Activities staff were great; Ulises and Erick kept us entertained; we love you both!!! New Year’s Eve was lots of fun, had entertainment then dancing, great job everyone!

The hotel charges $2 a day for the room safe; it is actually a lock that you get from them upon check in if you request it. We bought 5 days of Wifi at $35, not sure about the comment someone had on here about $7 per hour – certainly not what we paid. Wifi signal was weak at times, felt that if you are paying for the service it should work all the time. Location of this resort is fantastic, right behind Luxury Avenue Mall and about a 10 minute walk to La Isla. Buses to downtown are available in front of Luxury Avenue and are frequent.

Overall we were very pleased with the Barcelo Tucancun Beach. We are not sure why this is ranked 69 on Trip Advisor with the resort we stayed at last year ranked at number 10. Though they both have their positives and negatives the Barcelo Tucancun Beach certainly deserves a higher ranking that it is currently receiving. We certainly wouldn’t have trouble returning to it. Thank you to the staff at the Barcelo Tucancun Beach for making this a memorable family vacation.

My wife and I have just returned from this hotel and to be honest, we've had a cracking holiday. It's only a 3 star property, but it really does punch above its weight. From the moment we arrived, we really couldn't fault the hotel. As I said earlier, it's only a 3 star property and obviously you should not expect 5 star luxury, otherwise it would be a 5 star, but overall, it really was very good.

The check in was very quick and once we were in our room, it was obvious we were in for a comfortable stay. The beds and pillows were so comfy, that throughout the week, it was hard to get out of bed. There was a flat screen TV with quite a few English speaking channels. Tea and coffee making facilities and a well stocked mini bar, but because it's a 3 star, little things just let the room down, like wardrobe doors and drawers not shutting properly, But never the less it was very good. One thing that did bug me slightly was that no-one ever cleaned the mirrors in the lifts.

The rest of the hotel is fabulous for a 3 star. It has really good pools, very hard working, friendly staff, a great position on the beach and a buzzing atmosphere, with plenty of entertainment and decent drinks. The food was pretty good too, with plenty of choice and decent a-la carte options, which can be booked at reception. I have stayed at quite a few all inclusive hotels and even the 5 star food offering can become a bit repetitive and this hotel is no different, but on the whole, it was very good.

The mall across the road (luxury Avenue) is a nice distraction, as is the one about 10 minutes walk towards town called La Isla. Both have all the major shops and restaurants. You can catch a bus in to the party zone or downtown area from outside the malls, and they arrive every few seconds. It's a really good service, but please check your change, as the bus drivers tried it on twice with me by giving short change.

Over all, the hotel is fantastic value for money. Good location, good rooms, good food, good pool areas, good drinks and good staff. For the money we paid, we couldn't fault it.
Some people who write silly, unrealistic reviews, obviously want 5 star resorts, with 5 star luxury at a 3 star price. Well, it's not going to happen. This is a very good 3 star resort and overall, we've had a cracking holiday.

If you want to save on your vacations, this is actually a good option, its cheap and has it all.

Pros:
- Good beach and pool
- Good restaurant options
- Great location

Cons:
- NO FREE WiFi, its 14 bucks a day.. what a shame
- Accommodations are old an sometimes a little dirty
- Its an all inclusive so, expect crowded areas everywhere
- Rooms are quite small, ours had 2 balconies but it was small...

Room Tip: try to find higher rooms, they tend to be more quiet.

I pretty much agree with the consensus. I had a very pleasant stay here with my wife and sister-in-law. Beautiful beach, nice staff, very relaxing. Pretty easy to get lounge chairs at the pools and beach. Place looked a bit run-down. Food was adequate, not really good. I like the quesadilla and omelette station at breakfast. They can give you hot corn tortillas there, which go well with some of the buffet items.

Mixed drinks tend to be weak, drank a lot of beer, and tequila straight up. Mexican restaurant is pretty good. I liked the Mexican night entertainment -- really good mariachis. Surprised at the number of Mexicans and other Spanish speakers staying here--I liked that it wasn't all gringos.

The mall across the street is worth a look, and if you want a low-key excursion, the local ruins called El Rey are pretty interesting--and full of all manner of iguanas. You can take the bus there for less than $1.

Was a bit disappointed by the snorkeling excursion; they don't let you go off on your own, a bit regimented for my taste.

My main complaint was the guy trying to talk us into buying a cheap excursion and taking a tour of some property as soon as we checked in. I gave him some money, then changed my mind and was able to get it refunded, but had to fight for my refund. Not the end of the world, but a bit of a turn-off to get the hard-sell right in the hotel lobby. Also, the "$200 in discounts" that some package tours promise you is worthless--we didn't use a single one of these coupons.

Some other places might be more polished, but the water and beach here are great, which is the main thing.

This hotel was amazing! The staff was helpful and friendly, rooms were clean, and the food was great.

We were a group of 7 and everything turned out great. Rooms were clean, tidy, and beds were comfortable. The rooms were cleaned very well and the refrigerator was filled nicely everyday. There was pop, beer, chocolate bars, and peanuts in the fridge. The shower was huge and there was shampoo, conditioner, and body wash already in the shower for us.

The buffets were good. We loved the Don Quixote restaurant. The staff was very nice and the food was soo good. It was more seafood. We didn't take advantage of the restaurants that we would have had to make a reservation but it was really easy to make one if you wanted to. Generally each day the food was the same, they were different variations of the food but it was all great.

The staff was helpful, friendly, and sooo much fun! We were always treated very nicely. Definitely make sure you tip the staff. They go above and beyond for you. They helped make our trip fun.

There are two gift shops in the hotel. One takes US Dollars, one is in pesos. You can get pesos at the front desk. Otherwise they accept credit cards. There is a mall a short walking distance from the hotel. There are quite a few shops in it.

This hotel was absolute great! We definitely got our money's worth and I would definitely suggest this hotel to anyone!

Room Tip: Rooms facing the ocean are nice and sunny with a great view.

My review would be 2 out of 5 for the food in the buffet. We were sick of it by the end of seven days. Looks like lots of variety but most of it looks and taste a bit like slop. You can find a few favourites and make it through the week but they will cease to be your favourite by day five but you will keep eating it for the lack of options. There is two restaurants that can be booked for dinner if you do so well before noon. One is converted from the day buffet so it doesn't offer new atmosphere but does offer table service for their seafood dinner. We eat there twice. I would give that an 6 out of ten. Selection minimal and it was average to good. The Mexican restaurant open only for dinner was better. We ate there twice and enjoyed the steak dinners. I would give it a 8 out of 10 as the soup, side dishes, deserts never changed so it lacked a bit of variety. Every thing else about Barcelo Tucancan was better then the food. The staff were great with the exception of a couple of bartenders. The rest went above and beyond for great service. They were what made the difference for us in enjoying our week there. The Animation staff were amazing and I hope Barcelo know how lucky they are to have them. They made an ok vacation spot a really good vacation spot. The location of the hotel was good. If you want to stay in the heart of things (clubs, bars etc) this hotel is not really in it but you can take a 15 min bus trip there. The beach is beautiful and the pools overlook the ocean. I don't know why the pools have to be so cold. In a weeks time I only ever saw a few people in it other then during water aerobics. In the end, we would not return. Not because there was any really bad but because there wasn't anything really great that would need an encore. I think a 3 out 5 set right bar for your expectations. I would give it a 3.5 if that was available.

Room Tip: As said before, don't take a room over the lobby bar. Some nights will be loud. I lost one night...

Food - good
Drinks - good
Service - awesome
Beach - okay

Overall - resort needs some updating and maintenance but fair value for the price. We were just there for our wedding, the co-ordinator was such a pleasure to deal with. The photographers were very good. The beach setting for the wedding was elegant. The food and service for the wedding were perfect. Very accomodating. Being located centrally to the hotel zone made for the perfect group location. There was always something to keep the guests occupied, on or off the resort. The resort itself seemed more like a hotel than a resort. However, being located in the hotel zone did cause the excursions to be all day affairs, some as long as 14 hours! If you like to be in the heart of the action, this is a fair value. If you like more quiet, or more private settings, try the Mayan Riviera instead. Note, if you do stay in Cancun, bring LOTS of cash - everything is overpriced. The shows put on by the hotel were mostly family friendly and the entertainment staff very talented. With exception of the beach, everything was clean. Staff were constantly being observed cleaning and tending to the grounds. The beach, was dirty. Needed to be raked and cleaned. Also, the water was rough. To rough to swim in with ease. As well, drinks were not served on the beach, if you wanted a drink you had to go up to the bar at the pool. Food was available pretty well 24 hours a day and the evening snacks were quite tasty. Note, no disco on site. Also, they don't like to hand out straws, and the pool table cost money to play.

Room Tip: High up gets great views, but if possible, do upgrade as the rooms and balconies are small. The vill...
