We just returned from 2 weeks in Mexico, staying for 1 week at the Sun Palace, 3 days at the Aventura Spa Palace and 4 days at the Beach Palace. While on the trip we also went to the Moon Palace, Isla Mujeres Palace and the Cozumel Palace.
I want to preface this review by saying that we are not picky people and that while some aspects of certain resorts are more appealing to us, there is not a bad choice in the bunch. We did not find one place that had everything that you could want, but all would make for a great vacation for anyone.
I don't think that there is a significant difference in the quality of food or service in any of the resorts, we ate something at all of them and while some were better this was more a result of our personal taste than a significant variation in quality of food. The buffet food was excellent, for buffet food. There were 4 of us for the second week, and other than one person in our party having a steak that was kind of chewy we had no complaints. If you can't find something you like to eat at one of the buffets for breakfast or lunch you are probably someone who has that problem at any buffet. The service was always excellent, almost embarrassingly so. We were amazed at the consistently pleasant and competent people we had serving us. Our only negative interaction was with the fellow who checked us in at the Aventura Palace, and he was not really even rude, just not really interested in assisting us in changing rooms once we checked in.
The top ‘must see’ shows are the Fire Show, Circus, and Magic show – they were top quality, professional shows. We weren’t expecting much but were very impressed.
Here is a breakdown of the resorts...
Sun Palace... We stayed here the first week because we knew that this resort had the best beach and water, and to a large extent, it does. It has been remodelled about a year ago and has very nice modern rooms. We had a full ocean view (211). This resort has the white sand and beach Volleyball court. We liked the outdoor Steak restaurant, waves coming in, warm breeze, guy cooking meat to order and self serve accompaniments. This place is pretty small compared the monster resorts like Aventura Spa and Moon Palace so it lacks the ‘full on’ activity schedule and multiple restaurants but it is just down the road from the Cancun Palace and the Beach Palace, where you also have full privileges. The Sun palace had a nice gym, not as nice as the Spa Palace, but good enough.
This resort has the sand and the post card water; you can play in the waves here, but no water sports. If this is important to you, this is the place.
Aventura Spa Palace... We stayed here for 3 days and decided to go back to Cancun. We have been here before and there is nothing wrong with this place, we just liked the Beach Palace better. In fact, the other couple we travelled with also moved over with us and still liked the Spa Palace better because of the range of activities that a big resort like this offers. The only negative of this place is the Lagoon instead of the beach. They have great pools, a great spa and a great gym. If that's what you want this is the place. If you want the white sand and the waves and the clear Caribbean water, this is not the place. Also the rooms cannot compare to the Sun or Beach Palace. They are ok, but they are getting old and are in need of updating. After our week at the Sun Palace we were really disappointed in the room, which is why we tried to change it upon arrival, but the rooms they showed us were no better. Not bad rooms, but if you need a nice room and a great view.... this is probably not the place for you.
Beach Palace... We finished our vacation here, and loved it. Brand new, ultra modern, great water for body surfing, no rocks in the water, very shallow for about 2kms out (Sun Palace was rocky when you got out there a bit), small strip of beach . The roof top pool is awesome. The rooms were big, with big private decks with day beds on them. This is a hotel, as opposed to a big resort. It suited us best because we were also able to go to the Cancun and Sun Palace whenever we like, so it was like having 3 hotels. Only problem with this place is that it seemed to us that the rooms were poorly soundproofed. We could hear the people next door quite clearly so that could be a problem for some people depending on the neighbour. Also if you are a work out person the gym is tiny, not really even worthy of being called a gym.
We also visited but did not say at the following...
Isla Mujeres Palace... This place seemed nice, quiet and small. It was not as fancy and upscale as the ones in Cancun. A good day trip but I would rather stay in Cancun. It was the least impressive to us.
Cozumel Palace... We spent a great day there, no beach, but nice snorkelling right at the resort, good service, and a really good vibe there. We liked it but really would miss the beach.
Cancun Palace... the biggest and oldest of the Cancun Palace resorts. Had a great outdoor theatre for shows, nice pools, great Kids club, and big gym.
Moon Palace... Huge resort, lots to do. Great white sand beach, but the water is super weedy. They do have Kayaks and beach Volleyball but when I was there almost nobody was swimming in the ocean. We have stayed here before and had a great time, but it does not have the great crystal clear water – you need to take a catamaran or kayak out to the sand bar areas which are quite nice.
As I said, I think that any or all of these places are great vacation destinations. For us playing in the waves and walking on the sand is important, as are splendid rooms, so for us the Beach and Sun are best. If activities are more important to you go the Spa Palace or the Moon Palace. The food and service are going to be great. If you stay in Cancun, take the bus for 65 cents and check out the other 2 resorts. You can also get to the Moon Palace from the Cancun Resorts via shuttle and experience a big resort versus the hotel.
