We stayed at the Sun Palace from July 2nd to July 11, 2011. We have two teenagers and at home and were looking for a peaceful place to unwind. In that respect, the moon palace exceeded our expectations!

The positives of this resort:
Absolutely stunning pool area, great beach!
Couples only - quiet
Room was gorgeous! Amazing ocean view, great hot tub in room which we used daily!
The spa is amazing - had two massages. Rachel, my therapist, was remarkable!
The staff is friendly and very accomodating.
The oriental restaurant on the first floor is an underutlized area, beautiful place for a cocktail
We're gym rats - the GYM was well equipped and huge for a hotel gym!
Beverage service by pool was frequent.
Close to airport - only took 10 min to get there.
Took an amazing excursion to swim with whale sharks! Once is a lifetime experience!! That said, it is a long, arduous boat ride to get out to them (I should have taken sea sick medicine.)

The things that could be improved:
The food! The food! The food! I must say, if you are a foodie, this is NOT the resort for you. The breakfast and lunch options are okay, but the dinners leave a lot to be desired. I'm not a food snob, at all, but I had a hard time finding entrees worth eating. I'm not the type to send anything back, so I survived on pina coladas! :-) The food was the number one complaint of all the couples we talked to. The plus side to this bad food options was that I didn't gain any weight on vacation! :-)

Don't bother paying extra for the conceirge level package. We did, but didn't feel it provided enough perks for the cost. We did have conceirge check in and out, and 2 massages - but for the 800 price tag - next time we will skip it. They talk about reserved chairs at the beach, but the resort wasn't full, so that perk wasn't necessary.

All in all, this is a tranquil, classy resort. The upsides are the beauty, the quiet, rooms and staff. Just go knowing the food is below par - but hey, it's all you can drink!

Room Tip: Don't bother paying for conceirge level - wasn't worth the cost.

This was our first trip to Cancun. We own in Emerald Bay in Mazetlan and stayed at Sunset Beach in Cabo this past March. The Sun Palace was an amazing hotel. We traveled with 2 other couples and chose the Sun Palace after recommendations from our friends. We liked the option that we could visit and eat at any of the Palace Resorts in the Cancun area. We were treated very well at the other resorts for meals and when we used the sailboat and sailboards at the Moon Palace.
Getting around Cancun was easy from the Sun Palace because the city buses are easy to use. They only charge $1.00 US each time you get on. You can ride the bus from one end of Cancun for the same dollar. The most of the buses are air conditioned and the drivers make "good time" down the strip.
For couples, the Sun Palace is great. We would suggest the Cancun Palace or Moon Palace for families. The Moon Palace is huge! The Moon Palace is far away from the hotel strip in Cancun, but it has everthing you would need.
Visit Xel-Ha for a amazing snorkel experience!
The entire staff at the Sun Palace was wonderful. We also enjoyed the nightly turtle activity right in front of the hotel.

Room Tip: RCi members get a private check in area with food and drink! Very nice after a long flight!

My husband and I stayed at the Sun Palace May 22-26, 2011 to celebrate our anniversary. We got there early and they had a room ready for us, the room was clean but we had requested a smoking room and they told us that all rooms were non-smoking even though their website said "smoking and non-smoking rooms available". Not a big deal we finally got them to bring an ashtray so we could smoke on the balcony. Once we got settled in we went and ate at the buffet, it was ok but nothing to write home about. The Steak for dinner was very good. The buffet breakfast (all that's available besides room service) was good but got a little old after a couple of days. The service at the resort was just ok, we have stayed at The Royal in Cancun twice before and the service at the Sun Palace is nothing compared to the Royal. The entertainment staff at the Sun Palace was very good, one afternoon we got to the pool and EVERYONE was looking for something in the pool, it turned out one of the guests lost his wedding band in the pool during a game of volleyball. Some of the entertainment staff had snorkel gear on to try and find the ring and they eventually did. Overall the food was ok, I didn't care much for the Italian restaurant, the Mexican restaurant was good. It was nice to have the option of eating lunch by the pool, the tacos and fajitas were good. The beach was very nice and there were plenty of chairs. The activity pool was quite small like other reviewers have mentioned and it was hard to get a chair by the pool. Overall it was a nice resort but I don't think I would go back unless it was an unbeatable deal.

My wife and I spent 5 nights at the Sun Palace for our anniversary this July. As far as vacations go, this was overall the best resort we have stayed in, hands down. You might find a nicer room, more activities, etc, but for the money Sun Palace's service and ambiance exceed expectations and leave other all-inclusive and Caribbean resorts in its wake.

The only awkward part, this is Cancun after all, is avoiding the sales pitch to learn about the Palace resorts other properties. After the amount we were spoiled I wondered why they didn't do the sales pitch at the end of the trip, rather than the beginning. If free stuff is your thing or you are in the market, by all means go for it, but otherwise politely decline, the folks selling are just doing their job.

Check in was a breeze, we upgraded to the concierge level (which pretty much resulted in better liquor in the dispenser (my wife and I didn't use the cushioned beach chairs and instead just used the first come first serve chairs.

We mainly stayed by the party pool (the bigger pool) for the activities throughout the day. Water volleyball and polo are fun, but watch your feet with polo, they can get quite cut up.

The food and drink is actually quite good for an all-inclusive. If you are expected Michelin 5 star, you might be disappointed, but having done both cruises and other all inclusive resorts, I would vote Sun Palace an as good as or better than I have experienced before.

We booked two couples massages (a 50 minute holistic and a 25 minute back massage). Both were fantastic, and my wife raved about the back massage she got from Alberto.

The room and the view were excellent, having a hot tub in the middle of the room was a nice novelty that we used several times, it takes a while to fill up, but sitting in a hot tub drinking champagne looking out over the cool blue ocean is something you want to savor anyway.

I would recommend the Sun Palace to any couple looking for a fun getaway. The service is top notch and your every need will be catered to with a smile. There is no language barrier as most if not all of the staff speak English, although they always appreciate your attempts to learn and use Spanish - everyone was also very eager to help me learn new words and phrases as well.

Even though it is all inclusive keep some pesos on hand to tip the staff, they work their tails off to make it a great vacation for all the guests.

OVERVIEW: Wife & I just returned from 4 days/ 3 night stay @ Sun Palace for our anniversary. We booked thru AMEX & did a Concierge-level room. All staff were very willing & eager to help us in any way they could throughout our stay, whether it was booking a tour, getting an an umbrella on the beach, drinks, etc. The fact that Sun Palace is couples-only (i.e. no children) makes for a very peaceful experience.

LIKED BEST: All-inclusive, peaceful (no children running around), plenty of beer.
LIKED LEAST: Fruit quality just so-so; limits on certain things for which we could use "hotel credit." Sales pitches weren't too pushy, but still a little annoying.

SERVICE (GENERAL): Private check-in was very nice and personal. We arrived around noon & room was not yet ready, but they had it ready by 2:00pm or so. Meeting w/ Guest Relations staff was okay (info & sales pitch for tours, but wasn't too pushy).

SERVICE (DINING): Concierge-level gave us access to the more comfortable beach chairs and a supposedly a private server, though we noticed that the "regular" beach goers also had a server (and there were actually fewer people in that group needing service, so it was a bit more responsive). Chairs were nice, though. Service in all restaurants was great, especially in the Italian restaurant (La Tratto). The manager, Luis, was always present & it was evident that he cares a great deal about ensuring his restaurant remains the jewel of this resort.

FOOD: Food was very good overall. Surprisingly good burgers at the Snack Bar by the activity pool. Only criticisms are that there wasn't as much fresh fruit as I was hoping; fruit juices were excessively pulpy.

ROOM: Faced east & had great view of ocean, beach, & activity pool. Nice waking up to sunrise over the sea. Jacuzzi tub in middle of room was fun. All the light switches are a bit tricky to figure out, but cool once you get the hang of it. Housekeeping came 1-2 times per day, which was nice as we often came back & took a nap in the afternoon before dinner and then would return to a re-cleaned room afterwards. The clock radio apparently started shorting out the last night and beeped randomly beginning around 2:00am. (There was water leaking out of it, presumably from condensation?) We unplugged it, but a battery kept it going . Minor annoyance; not really a reflection on the hotel itself.

OTHER: We had $500 in hotel "credit" (or "points" as it was referred to by many of the staff). Fine print stipulated some limits: only could use $200 toward swimming w/ dolphins (it's $129/person) and only $100 for spa (50 min massage is $85/ea), so we skipped both of those. Ended up selecting a tour to Isla Mujeres & a photo package w/ the Kodak booth staff. (The $320 "value" of the "photo shoot" is obviously immensely inflated, but whatever. Like it or not, it's a sales gimmick that works.) The tour to Isla Mujeres included picking up people from Cancun Palace & Beach Palace, including a large number of children. Snorkeling was extra ($37/ea) and was pretty chaotic (strong current + lots of kids kicking us in the face), but your experience may vary.

My wife and I researched for a very long time trying to find our ideal honeymoon. My wife is not a big fan of Cancun and wanted to do Jamaica or one of the Virgin Islands. Well, I procrastinated and missed all the good deals but ran across a great deal to cancun. We were a lil leary about it but I must say my procrastination paid off because we had the most wonderful time at the Sun Palace. We arrived and had a drink served to us. We took advantage of the room upgrade but unfortunately our room was not ready. We browsed the facitilities while waiting and grabbed wanted to grab lunch but our timing was horrible. We were too late for breakfast but too early for lunch but they did have food in the lobby bar. We had appetizers and drinks while watching the NBA playoffs. lunch served and stragiht to our room. Everything was immaculate!!! We walked in our room, took a shower, and passed out on the king side bed until the next morning. It was non stop pampering after that. There was not one place on the resort that you could not order a drink or have someone ask if they could serve you. The spa was AWESOME!!!, the beach was AWESOME!!!, the service was AWESOME!! and I would really have to think hard to find any cons. The food although plentiful was not the most tasty all the time. We had minor problems with checkout as we had to come out of pocket due to double charging of our points at the photography session but my wife and I already decided that we will be back for our 1 year anniversary. We may bring our daughter so if not Sun Palace, it will definitely be a Palace Resort. Don't think about it, just book.

We stayed for two weeks on our honeymoon at the Sun Palace and how glad we are that we chose this hotel. Free of children, immaculately clean rooms and quality food. We recommend the filet mignon, of which we never tired and the fish at lunch time was fresh and varied eg langostines, shark, tuna, mahi mahi to name but a few. We used our points to upgrade to concierge level and really appreciated the extra touches eg petit fours, meal on the beach, pillow menu and aromatherapy . The room service was second to none, it was like having a restaurant in your room. Nothing was too much trouble at whatever time of day.
We used our points to have lobster and champagne meal on the beach and that was a 'wow', Moet and superb steak and lobster tail in idyllic settings. We were never left wanting for a drink, either in the pool, by our sun bed or in the bar, I cannot stress enough the super level of service. The entertainment team were very in tune with who to approach and how to approach, never too pushy and always very appropriate.
