“Javier Castro is the best”

The hotel is clean & on a great beach.
The food is very good - especially Maguey, the Mexican restaurant.
But the best is the people!
The service is surprisingly excellent for such a large hotel.
Javier Castro is the best - he has a great personality & seemed to be everywhere ready to help. The rest of the waiters were great, especially Daniel & Santos.
The two ladies who cook the tacos - Virginia and Filomena were always smiling even though they were behind hot ovens. And Stephanie from Star Friends was great.
Great experience.

Went there the middle of December and weather was great! Pool staff and drinks were great and always made a point of getting us involved in games. Nightly shows good. The couple show was the best. Arturo,Carlos and Omar were the best! My kids Sheldon and Marlana had a great time thanks to them. They will even take you to the night clubs after which was great as I wasn't sure what to expect but going as a group with vip entry and bottle service for $50!! Great. Food got a bit boring after a while but never starved! Will go again.

We stayed at the Iberostar in Cancun from 12/25-30/2013. Our group included 14 family members. As you would expect this was a rather busy time of the year to vacation so the hotel was full. That being said, the resort and staff handled the crowd extremely well. The service was top notch and we had no problems finding seats at the pool, the bars and the restaurants.

WIFI: The hotel website and room materials say there is free WIFI in the lobby, but you have to pay for WIFI for your room. However, during our visit, the WIFI was free everywhere (each person gets a password when you check in). There was good coverage over the entire resort.

Staff: Overall, the hotel staff was excellent. While it is an all inclusive and tipping is not required, we left a $2 tip per family for the buffets and $5 per family for the specialty dinner restaurants (this was recommended on Tripadvisor and it seemed appropriate).

Rooms: We were on the 6th floor in the main building. It seems all rooms have a view of the ocean. Some of the end rooms have a balcony. Our Balcony was a small area for standing (no room to sit/no chairs). The bathroom area was large and there is a separate area for shower and toilet (very small). There was a flat screen TV (nearly all stations in Spanish) and a safe. The AC worked well. There was a room bar with soda, beer and water – all included and refilled daily. The maid did a nice job with room. Every day she made some sort of animal with towels and used rose pedals which my wife loved. We had the same maid daily and they left her name so you can leave a tip if you want ($5 a day was recommended on this site). My folks stayed in a villa. Very nice room and their patio was next to the beach. These rooms are on the other side of the pools. If you want to upscale your experience consider the villas. Just be mindful of your location compared to the entertainment building as nightly shows go until about 11:30.

Restaurants: First off, there is always food available. There is the buffet restaurant (no reservations) which serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and late night snacks (until 1am). There is a snack area (open during the day) near the pool for hamburgers, hotdogs and fries. There is 24 hour room service (no charge). There are 4 restaurants for which you do need dinner reservations. We made all of our reservations the first day we arrived. The Steak House and Gourmet restaurant were excellent! The Mexican restaurant was very good (it is also open for lunch – buffet style). The buffet restaurant was excellent for all meals, with many choices including omelet bar, fresh fish bar, pasta bar, fresh baked breads, and a lot of fruit. There is also a Japanese restaurant which is hibachi with sushi appetizers. We cancelled our reservations to this one as we loved the buffet restaurant and did not want to do hibachi. "Smart casual" is the official dress code for the "reservation" restaurants (very casual for the buffets). In the "reservation" restaurants we saw everything from shorts and t-shirts to formal dinner wear. Day-time dress code is bathing suits and sandals.

Pools, beach and Bars: There were 7 infinity pools and bars everywhere. The swim-up bar was our favorite; and it seemed everywhere but the pool bar had top shelf liquor available. The pools were clean and not crowded. There was a nice pool for children loaded with various slides and other fun stuff. There were activities and music going most of the day. The pool and the beach were well maintained. Waitresses patrolled the beach and pool areas taking drink orders. Like other resorts, if you want premier seating get to the beach/pool by 8am with a towel to save seats. On the few days we did not do that, we were still able to find seats without problem. The only negative, was there were 2 Jacuzzis that were nothing more than bubbly water. Hopefully the management will fix them.

Entertainment: The nightly entertainment was adequate and fun - Usual resort stuff.

Misc: The “gym” is very small and is in need of a major update. They had 3 elliptical machines, 3 treadmills, a few weight machines and mats. If out want to do cardio on a machine, be prepared to wait. Note to management - The area needs to be double the size and should have a fitness instructor.

There is a cigar bar and sports bar – both were nice (much soccer and boxing). If you wish to visit Cancun and experience the nightlife, mall, or flee market (a real experience), you can catch a bus from a bus stop at the hotel entry for $1. US $ are welcome all over Cancun so no need to exchange.

We booked a snorkeling excursion at the hotel using Amstar. Amstar is a hotel sanctioned company as they have a booth in the lobby. Amstar will leave you notes at your room and the reps will tell you anything to get you on the trip. I would recommend looking at Tripadvisor and booking on your own and not using Amstar.

Overall, we had an excellent stay at the Iberostar hotel and will definitely stay at this or another Iberostar resort again.

My husband, I and infant stayed here the first week of December. The beach was beautiful (although too rough to swim in), the facilities were always clean, pool was great, and the service was outstanding. From the bars to the restaurants to the front desk - we were always greeted and all our needs were met - including changing rooms. The facility had cribs, highchairs and change tables and were very accommodating for us traveling with an infant (9 months). The food was good, often overcooked and a good variety (sick of it by the end). However, all 3 of us ate everything and never once did we get sick. Its not the best food we have experienced at an all inclusive in Mexico. We were able to get into the a la carte's fairly easily and enjoyed the experience.

If you are looking for a family resort this is a great one - however, the food is not amazing. Keep in mind I come from Vancouver, BC where we have some of the best food so my standards are high.

A family Christmas vacation for 14. Everything about this resort was terrific, from the facility, helpful people, excellent food and accommodations.Great pool area. No complaints at all. International vacationers made it more enjoyable and both employees and guests were helpful and friendly.
The lobby after dinner made people watching ( and conversing with) fun. Two of us had a villa right on the beach, which was heaven and the rest of the family was in the main building. A terrific time was had by all- we hope to return.The only improvement could be shower mats to avoid slipping.

Room Tip: If you like to wake up to the sound of the sea, get a villa near the beach.

All was perfect, avoid the mexican restaurant as better choices exist,a very enjoyable stay ,excellent staff. ,beach front spots limited so place towels to reserve spots early, good food, good entertainment.

I've stayed in four Iberostar hotels (Dominican Republic, Playa Del Carmen area of the "Mexican Riviera" and Cancun) and I can't recommend them highly enough, especially for families with kids. Here's why we keep going back, and a few tips.

- The properties are well-maintained, from nice landscaping to clean, comfortable rooms
- The staff is well-trained and friendly
- The staff includes "Star Friends," mostly kids in their 20s whose job it is to make sure guests have a good time and to lead activities like pool volleyball and games of soccer on the beach. Our kids ages 8-14 loved hanging out with the Star Friends.
- The buffets in the main restaurants have huge selections of food guaranteed to please the pickiest of eaters.
- While there are plenty of optional activities, including a nightly show, the resorts are quiet enough for you to relax and not deal with the drunken jerks that populate the party-style hotels
- Each of the hotels has some wild animals living on site: wild iguanas, sereques, flamingos or coatis. My kids LOVED spotting the animals while walking around the resorts.

A few tips:
- When you book, ask for a room away from the theater. Nightly shows run until about 10:30 and if you need to get a young child to sleep, the noise can be distracting.
- Don't bother to eat at the resort's specialty restaurants. The food at the main buffet is better anyway, plus you don't have to make a reservation.
- If you're heading toward the Cancun area, avoid the "hotel zone" and head a bit further south toward Playa del Carmen. The Iberostars closer to Playa del Carmen are nicer properties and are closer to day trips like visits to Mayan ruins, diving expeditions and theme parks.
