I've been going to CM's for a long time since I was first taken there by my parents years back. I would have reviewed Sonora alas it was closed down years ago - a tragedy as it was absolutely fantastic! Cancun was a great experience in replacement. We had some friends with kids and the little ones loved the Circus theme activities (and trapeze!) on top of the sports ones; in fact, of all of us, it is the children that had the best time thanks to a really good miniclub; a lot of which was covered by the resident photographer who took some memorable shots! For my part, I went once on that bloody thing (the trapeze) and hated it with gusto from the very first ten seconds. The accommodation is very nice and the sport offer is excellent, especially if you're into sea activities (I am particularly keen on windsurfing, sailing, wakeboarding and snorkeling). There was something for everyone; the better half is not so inclined on actually being in the sea so farniente was her pleasure with a lovely beach on which to relax. We met some really interesting people over meals from all over the world, with who we are in touch still, and I must say the food selection was delicious. Last but not least we had some great cocktails in the evening as the bartender knew exactly what he was doing. All in all, this Club Med can cater to all ages at the same time and ensures everyone enjoys themselves thoroughly. We would consider coming back if it weren't for other new adventures that await us first; but who knows afterwards? (PS: this is a club med where sporting activities are an important component so for those not so inclined, to be considered; I would not be able to say more in the are as we stayed the entire 10 days + took a five day extension as we enjoyed it so much and never once left the premises; a first for us!).

My family visited the Club Med Cancun Jade this October break. We had such fun last year that we returned again. It is an easy trip for us, with a direct flight from San Francisco, the club is an easy fifteen minute hop from the airport, and we brought friends with their kids this time, and they had a great time too.
The Jade part of the club has nicer rooms and a quieter pool. It's not Aman posh, so if that's what you want go to one of them, but it is a fantastic resort for an active family or couple. The food buffet is quite good quality, and there is always a selection of salads, salad fixings, soups, entrees, roasts, vegetable, etc. Breakfasts are very good, made to order omelets, porridge, fruits, cereals, breads and pastries, bacon, sausages, fresh juices, etc.
The resort is on a beautiful stretch of white sand beach and then a stretch of reef just south of the Cancun strip. When the beach has no waves the snorkeling is quite good, and when the snorkeling isn't great there are fun waves to play in on the beach. You can walk right in to snorkel from the resort itself. Windsurfing is fun, and the instructors for sailing, windsurfing, etc. are quite patient. Two of the tennis courts had been resurfaced since we were last there. The tennis is fun, some good players show up, but they need to resurface the rest. The waterskiing is fun, and the trapeze is something you don't find at many places other than Club Med when you are on vacation. Hannah was a wonderful circus instructor.
This Club Med has fantastic cultural excursions from it. You can arrange for private excursions (which I would advise to Chichen Itza). They have excursions to Coba, Ek Balam, Ria Lagartos, Tulum, and several other sites and natural wonders.
One word of warning, during the October break it is filled with French and Swiss families, so if you are uncomfortable with most people around you not speaking English any Club Med might not be a great choice for you. To me, that's a great bonus, and our kids have made long time friends from different countries when we've visited Club Meds around the world.
Hint - bring organic sunscreen that is safe for the fish/reef. Cotton always feels damp because of the humidity there, so quick dry clothing are better. The French guests seem to love theme dressing, and they have color themes at dinner, and both times I visited they had a cowboy themed night. How the French knew to bring cowboy attire I'll never know.

Room Tip: Jade is better if you need wifi for business or want to have access to the quieter pool.

We stayed 5 nights in early November and had a great time, despite some weather issues. We are a family of 4, with 9 and 6 year olds.

We did transfers with the hotel, which were adequate—when we arrived the guy was sitting down looking at his phone and the Westin guy had to point us in his direction since we couldn't see his sign. He was also not overwhelmingly friendly, although he was not an employee of Club Med from what we could tell. Transfers on the way back were fine.

Arrived at CM and discovered that they don't turn their clocks back at the resort, in order to have more evening daylight. Fascinating. But you need to be aware of the time differences so you go to the airport at the right time.

Miniclub—was not quite as good in some ways as CM Sandpiper (went last year), but in other ways was fine. My kids went most days from 9-12:30ish and then hung out on the beach in the afternoons with us. They also went back to Miniclub for dinner and activity several nights, from 7-8:45, as well as did the family activity from 4-5 a few days. The 4-7 year olds and 8-10 year olds were the groups, due to a small amount of kids, and the first day there were only 2 kids in the older group. I think it would have been more fun for my children with more kids, but still the staff is quite good for all the Miniclub. My kids got lots of turns on trapeze so they enjoyed that. The nighttime activities were good—one day a slip and slide on the beach into the water, one night dinner on the beach and cartoons on the beach in the dark—great fun. The little kids had a talent show, and one day there was tye-dyeing for anyone who wanted to.

Food—We mostly ate at the main buffet, La Hacienda, as Las Cazuelas was quite far (by the Jade building). For our family of picky eaters a buffet is perfect... The bread table, esp for breakfast, was unbelievable. They always have plain noodles, plain steamed vegetables, pizza, and whole fruit—kid friendly selections. For babies they always have one homemade baby food, jarred food, a blender, microwave, juices, and a selection of milks. They had a good selection of fish dishes and various ethnic foods each day. Some foods were better than others but we were never hungry. The kids were thrilled getting fruit or mango smoothies each day as well as ice cream after lunch and dinner. Adult beverages were better at some locations than others—all depended on your bartender. Beach boys wander the beach if you ever want a beverage. Dinner didn't start until 7, which is late for our family, and when we went at 7 we were definitely the “early birds”.

Beach—fantastic! There is nothing like Cancun sand! We never had an issue getting a Palapa for shade, maybe not in the front row but still never a problem. There was no seaweed until after a storm, and then some areas of the beach had more than others. There were maintenance workers raking up the seaweed but the job never seemed to be done. We just went to the area without seaweed—no big deal. We didn't realize how calm the sea was the first two days until we had a torrential downpour the third day and then it was pretty big waves from then on out. This was fine actually fine except that snorkeling was limited to adults due to the current—had we realized how that worked, we would have made a greater effort to snorkel the first full day we were there.

Room: We had a family deluxe room in the Topacio building. Very convenient to the best part of the beach and to Miniclub. I am glad we didn't pay the premium for Jade—it is far (for kids to walk) and we did not spend much time in the pool, preferring the beach. We love that the kids had their own room and bathroom—we ended up only using their door for coming and going—keeping the sand on the floor more contained. Rooms were cleaned well each day, although a little late in the day around 3ish—once we figured that out we made sure we were out at that time. We did have two minor maintenance requests that were never dealt with, even though we reported them twice. I do think the storm did not help as maintenance crews were very busy squeegeeing sidewalks and raking the seaweed for days.

Other: This resort has a very international flavor. Most people there were French. I think we were the only Americans there the first two days—once the weekend came some more arrived (long school breaks in Jersey and Fairfax meant more families from those areas). There were also a lot of French Canadians. Workers often assumed we were French and would speak to us in French (which we don't understand at all!) but could easily switch to English.

There is a resort photographer who goes around doing shots on the beach that you can purchase. We also did a family photo session—no sitting fee, you pay for the photos you buy only. This saved us 150-250$ compared to local photographers we had contacted.

We loved the live music each day—sometimes from 5-7pm, sometimes 7-9pm, in the central gathering place outside by the pool area. We tried scuba in the pool and considered a scuba trip, but it was too far for us to comfortably leave the kids for that long. We had wanted to do our own day trip via taxi and water ferry to La Isla Mujeres but when we lost a day to the rain we decided against it. It seemed that the activities could have been better organized on the rain day--they had to have known it was coming.

So we never left the resort. Kids were happy=we were happy. Overall a very good trip.

Room Tip: We had a lagoon View room in Topacio. I would have loved beach view but none were available. We hardly spent time in our rooms so it really doesn't matter. Our room was extremely convenient to the best part of the beach, the pool, and to MiniClub and fairly convenient to the main restaurant.

The club need a Big refreshing. Even if they paint often, the concrete fall on our head.
The main Beach is nice, but the sport beach is microscopic ; you have to walk in the water and on rocks to access it, there is not many chairs and they are old and very unconfortable. The pier is not functionnal.

The rooms are small and have only a tiny balcony whit only one unconfortable chair.

The GO's were depressed. They weren't at there best. The water ski team look board expection of Franscesco and Luciana. The animation was à bit better with the enthusiasmic Josh. The Brasilian night was the best.

The food was good but not exceptionnal. Ther is only two restaurants and the menus look's alike.

Is’t difficult for à couple like us, who travel without kid, to find a nice club med. There is only Turks, but he's very old and defresh.

We had travelled a lot in the past years and find that the club med star isn't capable to adapt to the competition who do much better for the same price.

We miss the olds Club Med.
