“Luxury with one unfortunate flaw”
Reviewed January 19, 2010

There are several Fiesta Americana hotels in Cancun, and apparently the Coral Beach site is a premium facility. Upon check-in, the helpful receptionist immediately upgraded us to a gorgeous Master Suite. Every room had a beautiful view of the turquoise waters- from the bath to the jacuzzi to the main living room with a two-step up bedroom area.

This hotel is large but still manages to be intimate. We really enjoyed the jazz trio every night in the lounge and the excellent service in the breakfast room, where a Continental Breakfast offers a beautiful fruit plate and selecton of breads or sweet rolls (pastry quality is excellent). So if you are wondering what the big flaw is, be advised that the sun drops down behind the tall hotel building fairly early, depending where you are at the pool, and there is NO sun poolside from 2:30 on. I asked one of the bellmen if this situation would improve at a different time of year and he thought not. You can move to the beautiful beach, which is really very nice, but again, the shadow of the building will leave you "cold" by 3:30 at the latest! Perhaps if it is warm, all of that might even be a blessing, but our weather was on the cool side. ALSO be advised: do not, for any reason imaginable, partake in the 90-minute timeshare sales pitch at another Fiesta Americana down the road. They may call you in your room and offer discounts, but it will not be worth the time and frustration. We could never get a price or definitive idea of cost out of the sales team, even though they kept us for two hours. We were offered discounts to participate, but they raised the exchange rate so much, we didn't save as much as we were told! So, just beware. All in all, the hotel is very special but we would probably not return because of the sun situation. If you do decide to visit, be sure and take a long, leisurely walk "up" the strip (away from the crazy bars and restaurants) because it gets nicer as you go.

My wife and I have now stayed at the FAGCB in Cancun three times. We travel to Cancun to sit in the sun all day and then go out a few times at night. The Fiesta Americana has a great pool area and is within walking distance to several restaurants and clubs. All rooms are at least junior suites, with a small area with separate sofa and table and all rooms face the ocean with a small balconey that has 2 chairs and a table. They must have mined an entire quary's worth of travertine. It's everywhere in the hotel--lobby floors and walls, hallways, bathrooms in the rooms. The hotel has upgraded the rooms with new furniture since our last visit. The improvements are generally positive, but there are some finish issues (our bathroom had 5 small random holes in the one wall near the corner--likely from a towel rack that was replaced). Other negatives include sub-par spa facilities (though I understand they're updating them soon), lightbulbs that seem to be burned out all over the hotel, non-functioning ice makers and a ridiculous amount of little signs in the room. That last one drives me crazy. I don't need 30 signs to tell me about amenities or how to use towels or that your hotel is very environmentally conscious and doesn't want to waste water (meanwhile you're happy to sell me water in plastic bottles). I always end up putting them all in a corner somewhere (see my picture).

They send you to a "concierge" after you check in. My BS detector started going off instantly as this is a time share come-on. The first lesson of time share sales must be making the honeymoon joke. We've gotten it everytime we've come to the hotel (and twice within 5 mins the last time). Goes something like this, "Are you here on your honeymoon?" "No" "Oh, well you look like honeymooners" If you tell the nice lady to get lost, the pitch only lasts 2 minutes and they give you a discount card that gets you 10% off all hotel restaurants and the spa.

It took us 3 visits to finally learn the difference between the "partial ocean view" and "ocean view" rooms. The partial-view rooms are located either on the first or second floor of the hotel. The first floor rooms have patios that face the public areas of the hotel. Some people like these, but I don't like having people looking into our rooms from 10 feet away. if you place any value on the view, you really want to be above the 4th floor, so you're above the height of the trees and have unobstructed views of the ocean. Above the 8th floor and there are views from the hallway into the harbor. We like to go across the street to a convenience store and buy a bottle of wine or booze and make our own drinks (and perhaps smoke a cigar) while sitting watching the sun go down. It's very peaceful and economical. (A note to anyone contemplating buying cigars in Cancun... many of the local cigar shops are selling phoney Cubans at ridiculous prices. Hint: Cohiba doesn't make machine-rolled cigars. If you can't tell the difference and want to enjoy a smoke, you're much better off bringing a supply from home)

Out by the pool, the staff is fairly attentive. The poolside lunch menu doesn't have any variety, mostly cheesebuger and hotdogs, but I ordered a seafood civeche 5 times. It's good, but a little monotonous to order over and over again.

Our favorite restaurant there is the Isla contoy. Franklin and Roberto where our servers and they were wonderful. You pick out fresh fish from a display and they cook it right after you order. The tables all sit about 20 feet from the water, so the view and sounds are great. There were very talented mariachies (sp?) while we were there as well. Interestingly, when you order a beer, they pour some into a glass and put the rest of the bottle in an ice filled pitcher-genious.

Le Bassilic is probably one of the best high-end restaurants in Cancun, with expertly prepared dishes and outstanding service. We sat in the lobby bar before our reservation and the nightly jazz band there was highly entertaining.

We took forever to choose the perfect hotel for our honeymoon, and we could not have chosen better. The most beautiful beach, delicious breakfast, super kind service and the best location in Cancun, right on Punta Cancun, close to the best clubs and restaurants. Totally relaxing place!

My wife and I went for a long weekend to FAGCB. It's a beautiful area and hotel. The breakfast buffet is the best I've had in my life... The grounds are well taken care of and service while you're eating is outstanding.

The problem came when there was a mess up with the scheduling of our stay. I prepaid the entire vacation for a nice discount. They decided to charge us twice for our stay since the dates were messed up. We couldn't do anything and we felt helpless in a foreign country where 'problems like these' are not resolved easily. I am a business owner and my wife a manager at a reputable, local bank. If this happened in America, it would have been fixed for no extra cost. Period.

On top of that, we never saw the sun because of hurricane weather... We learned our lesson to wait until December to go to Cancun...and we will never stay at Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach again.

We loved this hotel and we are very picky! The staff was wonderful as well as the food especially La hoya. The beach here is more ideal than the other side becasue the water is less wavy and it's better for snorekling. The hotel is also walking distance to the flea market and two different malls as well as many resturants. However, we loved the food at the resort so much we only ate there the whole time! The Sundy Brunch was excellent too with live Jazz, lobster, crab, shrimp, filet...you name they had it! The hotel is expensive but you get what you pay for. If I had to nitpick the only thing I would say I wasnt crazy about was the room decor.

We just returned from a wonderful stay at the FAGC.
Hotel was beautiful. We had standard rooms and found them beautiful and very clean. The staff was excellent! Miguel, who ran the teen activities entertained the group the entire week. Happy kids, happy parents. Location was great, walking distance to everything.
We have stayed at the Meridian before and preferred this hotel for teens.

Highly recommend!

Me and my wife decided to spent our New Year’s period in Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach Cancun as we got a great price for the season and some of ours friends told us that they would stay on the same hotel.

When you arrive on the hotel, you got really impressed: it’s a beautiful building, with a very nice reception and, as it was Christmas, an amazing Christmas Tree.

One disappointment: when we got to the hotel, no one served welcome drinks… so, I conclude that this hotel does not give it to the guests. Bad conclusion. On the next day, when I passed close to the reception, all the new guests were receiving welcome drinks. That was, for me, ridiculous: one day, some guests does not receive it… others days, they have this “gift”.

Yes, it’s a five star hotel… but just that; nothing more than that.

When I register that is a 5 star hotel and nothing else more, I mean that the hotel seems to love showing that they are member of Leading Hotels of The World and a Virtuoso Member. It can be member of these, but the treatment it isn’t.

Just to demonstrate what I mean: the breakfast is great, with a lot of options of food and fruits, but, some days, you had to wait because the breakfast salon it was full. Others day, you had a waiter to get your plate and leave it to your table; but others you didn’t.
On the beach, the service it was a little bit disappointed also. Some days, with a lot of waiters on the beach and on others days you had to wait for more than 5 minutes to see one.

So, as I’m saying, it’s a great hotel, with a perfect location but just that. Never can be consider a Leading or a Virtuoso member.

Another example of that was the fact that some of the guests (we were one of that), just because the travel agency that made the reservation was member of some agreement, had green towel, what guaranteed fresh towels and free bottles of water. But the problem of that is that, like ours friends, who paid the same rate but with another travel agent, other guests didn’t receive that, even if they asked for. I think that if you want to give amenities or special treatment, there is no problem with that; but, please, not in front of the other guests who paid the same price of rate.

Finally, one alert: some of ours friend had room close to the elevator… nice? No. In the evening, the piano bar guaranteed music on the rooms close to the elevator until 02.00 am.
