First trip to Cancun and loved it! The water and the weather were perfect. This resort has it all. Comfortable, relaxed atmosphere, good service, very nice and knowledgeable staff, and good food in the restaurant. Not many complaints here other than some minimal construction noise and the beach is a little narrow and cutoff from walking if you go left.

Business center had 6-8 computers with access to internet, spa/fitness area was great with steam room/sauna and locker room area. Pools were awesome and grills were super. There was some wind and the rip currents in front of the property can be bad so stick to the pool if you aren't a strong swimmer, in fact we saw the lifeguards pull an almost lifeless man from the water who went out too far.

Really liked the local bus system it was very reasonable to ride, the drivers didn't speak english well but understood enough to tell us when to get off. To get on was a short walk and it was cheap to go anywhere. The shopping was a good time especially at the downtown market. We first went to the closer market called Coral on the bus system and the prices were higher and there was a much better selection at the larger downtown market. You can get good deals if you barter and get a lot of items at one place. Only cab rides were to and from the airport.

Mall across the street is nice. We went to the Wal-Mart downtown on 2 different occassions and and you can get a LOT of groceries for $75-100.

Tequilla tasting up the street at the Hacinda Tequilla was set up by the resort and it was interesting and worth going to.

Took 2 side trips set up by the resort: first one to Xel-Ha and Tulum Ruins and it was a good combination and good use of a day. Tip - take your own organic sunscreen with you to Xel-Ha, we picked ours up at the mall across the street. Second side trip was a day trip to Cozumel and it was worthwhile as well. Snorkeling was fair compared to other places but the ferry ride, people, and scenery were great. Trips were reasonably priced at around $100 per person for a full-day trip with food included. I liked setting them up through the hotel as the buses came directly there and although setting it up online might have saved a few bucks the peace of mind is worth it.

I'll go back to Cancun and to Westin Lagunamar again without hesitation. If I didn't have to work for a living I'd probably be there now!

First of all, you have to check out the photos of this new resort, especially the pool. It is the most relaxing, picturesque setting. The beach is nice for sun too, and their are cabanas/lounges in abundance. No fighting over pool or beach space here - it is ample. The waves are a little rough and you can get pounded at times, but my kids had fun in the surf anyway.

The rooms are not large, but are spotless and nicely appointed. Upscale kitchen appliances and fully stocked cupboards mean you could actually eat all your meals at the hotel for a decent price. Everyone who stays here does their grocery shopping (via city bus) at the Walmart Superstore. This hotel was our last stop in Cancun, and alas, we were only there two days so we just ate at the local restaurants. You could walk to upscale shops, restaurants, tourist attractions, bars, and theatre in five minutes or less.

The hotel staff was great. They did charge for the roll away bed - it might have been $30 or so, but that is a flat charge no matter how many nights you stay. It made the room VERY crowded but my two sons were happy to sleep in separate beds. For some reason housekeeping took our sheets and blankets off the rollaway, so when we got to our room we couldn't all go to bed. After the third call and about 3 hours later, they arrived at our door very apologetic.

They have a great business center downstairs that is loaded with computers. There was never a time we were in the business center when there weren't enough to meet the demand.

We met a lot of nice people by the pool. Two families had originally booked the older Westin and ended up moving to the Lagunamar. They said the other facility is really dated and is currently in the early stages of renovation -- it's noisy and they have a long way to go. So keep that in mind.

They did offer a time share presentation, which included a $100 credit toward our room or any food/drinks/spa services as well as 50% off on excursions. This was a no pressure offer and they were extremely polite and professional. They gave us a Westin travel bag as a gift even though I didn't want the presentation. I was still recovering from the horrible experience at the Sunset Royal Hotel (you can read my review on that one if you want to be sure to avoid staying there).

Another very cool thing about this resort is the night time barbecue party people have by the pool. The hotel staff will light a stainless steel gas barbecue for you to use, and many folks enjoy getting to know others while doing so. Tables are nearby, or you can take your dinner back up to your room. There is also a hammock area where you can relax.....it's very tranquil and if you can't relax at this resort, something is wrong with you!

Interesting note to fellow vacationers: one of the staff members commented on how fresh and cheerful I am. I stated, "Well, I'm on vacation, so why wouldn't I be? Is it unusual for you to see cheerful people on vacation?" I was really surprised when she said, "Yes, very unusual. Most people are so stressed out." So keep that in mind next time you travel....make it a point to unwind and be grateful you get to be in such a beautiful place.

We spent 9 days in Cancun, and stayed at 2 different hotels. We stayed at the Westin Lagunamar for the last two nights of our trip and it was a perfect ending to an already great vacation. We had a 1 bedroom suite with a living room and kitchen, including a washer/dryer. Great view of the pool and ocean from our 7th floor balcony - the Caribbean See seemed to go on forever! The beach at this part of the Cancun Island is delightfully devoid of all the rocks that we experienced around the Royal Mayan (15km), and we enjoyed being able to wade into the Sea without fear of slipping on rocks. There is a parasailing stand on the beach, so very convenient if that's an activity you want to try (we did and loved it!). Our 2 kids (11 and 13) loved the water slide, and the pool is huge!

La Isla Mall is right across the street - great place for shopping and lots of restaurants. The pool restaurant at the Westin was our favorite, as it was more casual - but it's only open in the afternoon for lunch. The other restaurant off the lobby serves breakfast and dinner, but it's a little pricey.

We were allowed to check in early since the room was ready, and also allowed to check out 2 hours late since our flight left in the afternoon. Staff was very friendly and accomodating; English spoken by everyone. We highly recommend the Westin Lagunamar!

Our initial impression of the hotel was great pool/lobby and the rooms were ok but we were called 2-3 times a day by time share people the first day walking us up early. It stopped when I finally made it down to the "concierges desk" which was really a time share desk and not at all concierge & told them I was not interested and the phone calls stopped. Our other dissapointment were several tacky guests/families going out to the pool at 7AM to "reserve" their pool side lounge chairs with books, sandals to show up hours later; by 11AM - 12noon to claim their "chairs". Frankly I moved the junk away and we sat there for hours until a rather large lady came out to "claim" her seats; told her sorry but they are taken and we got to look at her nasty stares for the rest of the afternoon and listening to her talk about how we "took her chairs. Hotel should put a sign up that if you're not in your chairs for extended periods of time other guests should be able to sit there and "reserving" chairs early in the AM to return at lunch time not acceptable. We moved to Fiesta Americana after 3 nights at this hotel and absolutely loved that hotel, the service, no time share people and a classier guests!

We cannot say enough positive things about this resort., its location, or its staff. While many complain about the beach, or lack thereof, we found it to be quite perfect. While not for small children or the faint of heart, the surf offers a warm surround of crashing water - very similar to that of Waikiki.
There is even a Mayan Ruin directly adjacent to the property, complete with iguanas - very entertaining for adults and children. Beware of sales people everywhere trying to entice visitors to tour hotels and resorts, book tours, and buy jewelry -- they are everywhere and very persistant.
The staff greeted us in the most pleasant way, making us immediately feel comfortable and relaxed, even after 13 hours of flying time.
The pool temperature was just fine in the afternoons, though slightly cool in the morning, but the temperature is completely forgotten after looking out to the Caribbean Sea. Two words of caution - WEAR SUNSCREEN - even though I had a deep tan, I burned in less than half a day.
La Europa is a shop about 10 minutes walking distance from the resort (completely safe to do so), and it is fully stocked with outstanding, reasonably priced wines, liquors, specialty deli goods, and other food staples that make the trip even better. Traveling by bus to Walmart is incredibly easy and safe as well, and it is very inexpensive to shop.
After traveling abroad and staying in five star hotels and resorts for years, we feel very comfortable in recommending this resort to anyone traveling to Cancun - it is a lovely place.

The property is quite beautiful. I thought the landscaping was nice. There is, however, a lot of cement with many lounge chairs. This is necessary because there is practically no beach on the east facing side of the island. The beach is hard to walk because it is very narrow and steeply angled towards the water. We knew this going in, as we have been to Cancun numerous times. We had a room in Building 4, third floor. The room is nice; it's small but has a comfy bed, kitchenette, washer/dryer, and a small balcony. The bathroom had a shower with separate tub; it was nice but like others, we did have some minor flooding from the shower. Easily fixed by a towel. Our view was slightly obstructed as the room was adjacent to the next building. It overlooked the pool and sea, but we could not see "beach". This may be because the floor we were on was too low, or just because there isn't much of a beach. We were disappointed that you couldn't hear the sea and waves from the hotel area (pool or our room balcony). There are fountains that are turned on 24 hours a day which drown out the sounds of the sea. The pool was great; we did not find it cold. It's very large and beautiful. The pool bar was also great.

Service was 3 star. Housekeeping does show up every day for renters vs. vacation property owners. For us, this was around 5 pm, which was the end of our beach day, so we did not use housekeeping services. Two restaurants were available - by the pool and the main one. We did not eat there. We tried to order room service several times, but nobody answered. We tried for 30 minutes without success. We had trouble exchanging money at the hotel. They did not have enough pesos for $100 usd. We got a handful of change, a stack of very small bills, and "we owe you 2 pesos". There were very few people at the hotel, and in Cancun in general. Like another reviewer, we tried to upgrade our room but were told no rooms were available. I prefer honesty, and that was clearly a lie. The staff was friendly but not very helpful. I will temper this by saying that we typically stay at the Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach when in Cancun, which is clearly a 5 star property. While we were not expecting 5 star services, we did have higher expectations than what we experienced. We checked out 4 days early to move to the Coral Beach. Upon checking out, we were a little surprised that the staff did not even ask why we were leaving early.
Overall, it's a nice property. Service could be better, but I think it is on target with the hotel rating. I prefer the north shore beaches; they are bigger, the sand is powdery white and soft, and there are gentle lapping waves. The east side (which the Westin Lagunamar faces) has coarse sand, steep slopes, and rough waves - which are fun for a while. If you love the Westin but want a nicer beach, take the bus to Playa Caracol or Playa Tortuga on the north side.

My mom and I stayed for 5 nights at this beautiful, new hotel. We were in a one bedroom suite, and the bed was the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in!!! The bathroom is awesome too. I loved balcony and view! The pool was a bit on the cold side for me but my mom enjoyed it.

Our experience there was wonderful until the last day when cash was stolen from our room in the 20 minutes that neither of us were in the room and we had taken everything out of the safe because we were about to check out. It was not a large amount, but the principle of it was the bothersome part. The staff took a report and said they were going to investigate, but never followed up with us about it. My remaining pesos were part of the stolen amount, which was to be our cab fare to the airport, so they did provide a private car service for our airport transfer.
